6 MODERATOR UNDER CONSTRUCTION That s how I would summarize For this is a year that has transformed us in many ways and in ways that are still being revealed. Of course, the building renovation was a major focus for all of us. The disruption caused by the construction shifted us out of our routines and invited us to find creative solutions and adaptations. After the dust settled, we discovered an elegant new Fellowship Hall and Narthex, inviting door-wall and enormous storage closets. We also rediscovered the joy of fellowship during coffee hour, room to play for our kids and youth and a welcoming space to accommodate groups from our community who need a place to meet, rehearse, exercise, entertain and learn. Phase II is in the planning stages but is expected to include a refreshed choir room, additional storage and an outdoor patio/worship space, among other things. Stay tuned for more on that as details become clearer. The entire building project is being piloted by the capable and creative minds and hearts of Michael Bauhof and Barbara Burnham, both of whom have given their time and talent with endless generosity and love. Dave Vander Weide jumped in to help when we discovered we needed a new fire alarm system throughout the building, and Todd Dolan contributed his considerable building expertise whenever needed. Apart from the renovation of Fellowship Hall and the Narthex, the Ladies Room was completely redone, thanks to the generosity and hard work of Jim Hothem. The women of Northbrook are so grateful for this much-needed improvement, and Jim, I just know Bev loves what you did with the place! A new parking lot and new sidewalks were installed, giving everyone a new appreciation for the ease and safety that smooth pavement provides. Thanks again to Todd Dolan for coordinating this effort. These improvements have enhanced our facility, and we all enjoy the results. But, the building is just a tool, isn t it? It s what enables us to do the ministries that Jesus calls us to. It s the training ground where we are equipped to grow in faith, and from which we are sent into the world. And, that s been happening too. Consistent with the Session s vision to grow our ministries beyond the church walls, a search committee was established to fill a brand new position, Assistant Pastor of Outreach Ministries. This position was created to actively explore new expressions of the church for the 21st Century as we seek to share the gospel with folks who have grown skeptical of religion, or for whom the church no longer seems relevant but who nonetheless are still spiritually hungry. We were conscious of God s guidance that led us to Jackie Spycher. Her presence here is already making a difference as she reaches out to make new connections in new places, while also providing fresh perspectives and energy within our walls. In January, we participated in an Ecumenical Service of Prayer for Christian Unity at St. Regis Catholic Church, and in November Northbrook was part of an interfaith Thanksgiving worship with our brothers and sisters from Christian, Jewish and Muslim congregations. We will continue to pursue ways to grow our relationship with our friends in faith and in community. We were thrilled to host the Ugandan Kids Choir in July. They brought the sunshine of Africa into our Sanctuary and the heartbeat of global love that thrilled us all. They left a lasting impact, especially on the Broadwells, the LaSotas, Peggie Schiller and Nancy Best, who opened their homes and their hearts to host these kids. Thank you. Our musical adventures continued in August when the Belgian Band came to town. At late notice, Northbrook threw open its doors, and many of you opened your homes to welcome this talented group to Michigan. The concert they gave here was unforgettable, and the friendships they left us with are lasting. Spectrum 2017 Annual Report 5

7 Orchestra has also been a welcome part of Northbrook, rehearsing here each week and performing three marvelous concerts during the year. If you haven t yet attended one, you should! I have loved the opportunity to learn with you as our Pastor s study group has explored the New Testament, Spiritual Disciplines, Painting the Stars: A dialogue of faith and science and the Gospel of John. Our women s retreat in May was all about Mindfulness, Meditation and Mandalas. Nancy Thayer, a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist and faculty member in the Fine Arts Department at U of M, joined us for part of the time to guide us through these concepts. I continue to feel incredibly blessed by the privilege I have to be your pastor. Together, we ve worshiped, studied, and served in Jesus name. Together, we ve hoped and envisioned, planned and participated, built and blessed. I am grateful for all the ways you invite me onto the mountaintops and into the dark valleys of your lives. I continue to be awed and humbled by the ways in which you live out your faith ways both small and great, remarkable and quietly incremental but always faithful, generous, and loving. I look forward to what God is inviting us into in 2018 as together we seek to live the love of Jesus Christ. In closing, I offer you these words from 1 Corinthians: I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Yours in Christ, Marjorie ASSISTANT PASTOR OF OUTREACH MINISTRIES Since coming on board as the pastoral assistant in mid-october, my goal has been to get to know the personality of the congregation as well as the individual congregants. To that end, I have: Met individually with staff members to learn about their programs and roles. Attended Session and committee meetings. Visited with church groups (Senior Souper Lunch, Knit Wits, Bible Study, LOGOS). Attended congregational events (e.g. Trunk or Treating, Favorite Things). Shared coffee and meals with individual congregants and families. I have also taken time to get to know the Detroit Presbytery: Had lunch with local pastors and the young clergy women s group. Met with the Executive Presbyter. Completed my ordination requirements by meeting with the CPM, COM, and Presbytery. I have also assisted Marjorie in liturgical and worship planning: Served as a liturgist. Preached sermons. Assisted in planning Advent worship and activities, including the Looking for More Movie Series. I have started to think about ways in which we can expand the outreach of this congregation: Developed and maintained new social media accounts on Instagram, NextDoor, and MeetUp. Assisted with already existing church communications (e.g. the newsletter, Facebook) Annual Report 6

8 Served as a panelist for an educational program with the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metro Detroit; spoke to th graders about Christianity. Welcomed the audience at the DSO Chamber concert at the church. In the coming year, I will continue to get to know and care for the congregation by meeting with individuals and families, as well as assisting with worship and congregational events. It is also my goal to start new programs and initiatives outside the walls of the church. Congregants would be welcome to take part, as well as bring along friends and new faces. This is an exciting time in the life of Northbrook Presbyterian Church, and I am blessed to be a part of it. Thank you for welcoming me! Respectfully submitted, Rev. Jacqueline Spycher, Assistant Pastor of Outreach Ministries COORDINATOR OF CONGREGATIONAL CARE Northbrook s model of congregational care is built on an active pastoral-staff-lay partnership. The purpose of Congregational care is to extend the reach of the pastor to care for all our members as Christ would for His own. In the context of the vision of Northbrook Presbyterian Church, I work in conjunction with the Senior Pastor to equip, support and coordinate care ministry and Congregational Life areas within the church. During this past year, these are some of the ministries and projects of which I was a part: Provided care to the members of Northbrook Presbyterian Church by coordinating visits with the Pastor and the Deacons, and conducting home visits, hospital visits, nursing home and retirement center visits and bereavement visits as needed. Supported the Moderator of the Deacons and provided staff leadership, encouragement and a sense of camaraderie and purpose for the Deacon Board. Established the medical equipment lending resources collection consisting of walkers, canes, shower chairs and stools, weights, leg lifters and other items necessary for short term care at home. Staffed the Congregational Life Committee and supported their events in the church. Worked with Lee Anne Hemberg to review the membership records of the church, including preparation of the annual report and statistical report to the session regarding changes in membership rolls. Helped plan the Blue Christmas service. Worked closely with the pastor in planning Leadership Training events to build relationships and help leaders understand how to work with one another and members of the congregation in positive and effective ways. Coordinated the disassembling of Fellowship hall for the Renovation. Thank you so much to all of you who have brought joy into my life and the lives of members of our congregation through our care-giving ministries. To the members of the congregation, thank you so much for sharing your stories, your hopes, your worries, your illnesses, who you are with me over the past year. I am humbled by your trust and love. Special thanks to: Diane Joppie for her loving and supportive leadership of the Deacons. The Deacons who have embraced the spirit of Christ s love and commitment as caregivers. To Judy Owen for her boundless energy and enthusiasm for the work of the Congregational Life Committee, for Senior Souper Lunch, for all the pies and endless cookies (with a lot of chocolate chip help from Phil), for all the laundry and for always sharing the love of Jesus Christ with others. To the Congregational Life Committee for always being ready to lend a helping hand, understanding and living out their role as the loving support team for memorials, meals and many, many coffee hours Annual Report 7

9 To Larry Brown and Becky Bachand for their behind the scenes love for this congregation, always quietly rearranging furniture, washing and folding linens and always making certain that our church is properly put together to show her best face to those who come to Northbrook. Grace and blessings as we strive to Live the Love of Jesus Christ, Sherrill Heinrichs, Coordinator of Congregational Care DIRECTOR OF MUSIC We are truly blessed to have such wonderful musicians in our midst! Thank you: Thank you to Marjorie and the congregation for their continued support of the music program and all its musicians. Thank you to all the choir members young and old! Thank you to the Praise Band members for their dedication and expertise: Dan Gross and Pete Zajicek. Special thanks to the musicians who helped make the Easter and Christmas Eve services joyous celebrations: Carl Gippert, Rob Olson, Ken Stetson, John Thomas and Dakota Tuomi. Thank you to Bruce and Linda Hermes for the COUNTLESS hours that they spent organizing, counting and filing music in the choir library. Thank you to everyone involved with and in the music program, not only to the members of the choirs and instrumentalists who continue to contribute their time and talents to the church, but also to their families who are supportive of these musicians. Attending countless hours of rehearsals, Sunday services, special services and concerts requires a lot of commitment and dedication. A program like this could not flourish without all the help and support that is given by all its members. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the music program. Respectfully submitted, Angel Gippert, Director of Music BOARD OF DEACONS Deacons were very busy during 2017 as the caring for each other ministry of the church. Some of our regular activities included: Sending birthday and anniversary cards to congregation members. Sending greeting cards of support or in celebration to congregation members. Visiting members who are homebound, ill or hospitalized. Providing emergency meals to congregation members. Preparing Visitor Bags that are used to welcome visitors each Sunday. These bags are stocked with Northbrook information and goodies. Preparing and serving communion. Additionally, this year, we reviewed and updated the guidelines for communion preparation and service. Sending Journey Through Grief booklets to the family of a member who has died. The booklets provide grief support through one year following the death. Celebrating the 90th birthday of congregation members with a special coffee hour. Praying for all members of the congregation and for those who request special prayers. Sending Deacon Introductory Letters, a letter that is mailed or ed to each congregation member by their assigned deacon as an introduction and to provide deacon contact information. Preparing and delivering Care Bags to members who are hospitalized or in a follow-up medical care facility. The bags include essentials like various toiletries that are no longer offered to patients, written prayers, and a mini prayer shawl lovingly made by our knitting group Annual Report 8

10 Webster s dictionary defines a Deacon as a servant, and a huge Thank You is appropriate for each member of the Board of Deacons who has heard God's call and responded with love and a caring heart: Allison Broadwell, Sallie Dorer, Joyce Hamburg, Lee Anne Hemberg, Brian Long and Bill Travis. These deacons are exceptionally dedicated and most generous with their time. We also remember, with sadness, the loss of one of our Deacons, Lou McLeod. We celebrate her contributions to the Board of Deacons and her cheerful, giving heart. We are so very, very thankful to staff member Sherrill Heinrichs who provided her loving guidance and direction during the year. We are truly blessed by Sherrill as she consistently demonstrates much compassion for all congregation members. Prayerfully submitted, Diane Joppie, Moderator ADULT EDUCATION COMMITTEE The Adult Education Committee offered three programs for the congregation and community in 2017: A self guided tour of Habitat Galleries in Royal Oak followed by lunch. A guided tour of the Oakland County Pioneer Historical Society. Elizabeth Chiu King was hosted in November, and she led us in Christian meditation. Currently, the Adult Education Committee members include myself, Mary Hendrien, Lois Kurta, Paulette Lein, Seglinda Kelle-Pritchard and Marjorie Wilhelmi, staff liaison. Linda Hermes, who moved to Chicago, resigned, and, sadly, long time member Co Abatt passed away. We hope to add to our membership this year. Other programs that fall under Adult Education are: Marjorie's Bible studies, Knit Wits and Men's Connection. Thank you to the congregation for supporting our events, my committee for their thoughtful help in planning, advising and bringing wisdom. Thank you to the staff of Northbrook for all of your generous help. I am truly grateful to each and everyone. Respectfully submitted, Liz Hurbis, Chair BUILDING AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and the community around us as an elder on session and chair of Building & Grounds. A big thanks to Larry and Lynn, our custodian staff last year, and Pierce, our Sunday set up person. The Building and Grounds Committee is gifted with diverse skills and a commitment to serve and get the job done. The committee members who have helped to keep our church home warm and dry are: Michael Campion, Todd Dolan, Jim Hothem, Keith Lee, Brian Long, Dave Tengler, Dave Vander Weide and Jeff Wilhelmi. A special thank you to Barb Burnham and the skills she brought to help organize some of these projects and make our church look and feel like home Project Highlights: Fellowship Hall remodeling Phase 1 Parking lot repair and repaving Women s bathroom remodel Front sidewalk replacement & sealing HVAC repairs Updated fire and safety alarm protection 2017 Annual Report 9

11 Manse repairs including: gutters, landscaping, plumbing, tree and shrub removal and driveway repairs A sidewalk addition between the manse youth house and labyrinth Replacement of the main water shutoff valve A continued effort to replace conventional light bulbs with energy efficient LED lights Gardens and grounds kept tidy with Spring Clean-up and individual member efforts Thank you to all the Northbrook members who give their time and talents to make and keep our church a warm and friendly church home. Respectfully submitted, Michael Bauhof, Chair CHILDREN'S MINISTRY COMMITTEE Our focus was to serve the children of our children, while hopefully offering programs that our children would like to invite friends to as well. We decided to focus on five yearly events that we can make annual occurrences and hopefully expand. We also realized that the mid and senior high youth were attending these events either as helpers or participants. We saw that they enjoyed the programs, had fun with the children, and felt good about their service to the church. We would like to expand our working more directly alongside these youth and work directly with Ken Stetson to ensure that we are understanding the needs of all of our youth together. Yearly Events: Palm Sunday Bunny Brunch: For the second year, we served a fun brunch to the whole congregation while the children were able to participate in an egg hunt with their families. Great fun was had by all. We received positive feedback about the event from all ages. Movie Night: We watched The Lego Batman Movie outside on the playground. We purchased an inflatable movie screen this year and felt it was a great addition to our equipment for youth events. We had bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and games beforehand and enjoyed snacks during the movie. This event was enjoyed by all youth (prek-12th grade) of the church and their families, as well as families from the preschool. Sunday Funday: The event had many games, inflatables, snacks, lunch, live music by Dan Gross and Steve Taylor, and even a new train man! We thank all of the church and community members who made this event possible! This was our 3nd annual Funday event that included a fundraising portion to benefit a charity in our community. This year, we raised funds to benefit Ryan Rocks Outdoor Adventures, a nonprofit organization that provides children with a Pediatric Cancer diagnosis and their immediate family an awesome outdoor adventure. RROA looks to provide these children with a memory that will last a lifetime. The congregation was again so generous with their purchases of 50/50 raffle tickets and direct donations to RROA. The Millers were very touched by the kindness of their church family. Trunk or Treat: We have offered this as a fun event at the end of LOGOS for the last 2 years now. This year was awesome! We had many cars that were decorated by church members and youth. The children, from the area, our preschool and LOGOS, were able to walk around and trick or treat. There was a cookie decorating station and game station. A great addition was made by Terri Hurbis who made bags of treats to hand out to children 2017 Annual Report 10

12 with allergies! Great fun was had by trick-treaters and adults/youth alike. This will be a yearly event for this church now. ADVENTure: We offered this as a chance for parents to have their children attend for a nominal $10 fee so they could holiday shop or spend parent time together. Eighteen children attended, and many of those were Northbrook preschool students. We definitely met our goal of offering a service to parents, advent craft and story time to children and attracting parents and children to the church and offering exposure to our church s programs. This year, we used the rooms in the hallway instead of Fellowship Hall due to the construction. We actually found this to be much better and will continue with this plan for the coming years. The children had breakfast, followed by visiting rooms where they made an advent calendar, decorated cookies, watched a movie with popcorn and heard an advent story. When they left, the children were able to take all of their crafts as well as a sweet lamb from the story home with them. We heard from many parents how wonderful the lambs were and how they were retelling the story to the families with the lamb. Great addition! Curriculum for KIDS Connection: We continue to be pleased with this particular program, Growing in Grace and Gratitude. A big thanks to Kristen Miller for working with me to teach the children on Sunday mornings. We are in need of more adults to help with KIDS Connection teaching. Kristen Miller has taken a leave due to Bob s illness and recovery, and I have been the only teacher since early fall. We will actively encourage others in the congregation to step up and be a part of this great program. Respectfully Submitted, Cindy Sowle, Chair CONGREGATIONAL LIFE COMMITTEE The Congregational Life Committee remained as busy as ever despite being displaced for four months from Fellowship Hall. We kept busy throughout the year with the social life of the church. We offered comfort to grieving families by hosting memorial luncheons. Honored through the year were Karen Keier, Bev Hothem, Ruth Krebs, Helen Chapman, Co Abatt, Dick Ross and Nancy Schaefer. We celebrated the ordination of Matt Bauhof. Various members helped us host coffee hours, cupcake parties, and, finally, a Cookie and Carols Party in December. Senior Souper Lunch continued on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. Committee members who gave tirelessly of their time and talents were Kim Bowden-Adair, Roberta Campion, Doug Joppie, Sue Koss, Judie and Bruce Murdock, Phil Owen, Marybeth Parks and Barbara Voight-Stetson. Special thanks to Cheryl Clemens who maintains our food service license. Thanks, too, for the continued guidance and helping hands of staff member Sherrill Heinrichs. Respectfully submitted, Judy Owen, Chair MISSION CONNECTION COMMITTEE During 2017, mission work, learning and fun were a major part of community life at Northbrook. While serving others, we attempt to Live the Love of Jesus Christ. A variety of activities and events enabled us to make a positive difference in the world, whether in the greater Metro Detroit area, in other areas of the country, or in places far around the world. Here is our mission year in review: 2017 Annual Report 11

13 On-going Activities: We continued our food preparation and support at Fort Street s Soup Kitchen and regular donations and deliveries to the Fort Street Clothing Closet. We continued our support of the Sundberg Family (Justin, Renée, Autumn, Jack, Cassie, and Ethan) as they served their final year as PCUSA Missionary Co-workers in Nicaragua. Justin made a visit to Northbrook in November. Northbrook continued to support at least two dozen non-profit organizations, not including groups and projects supported through our contributions to Shared Mission at the Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly levels. Our ongoing Empty Bowls Collection of loose change helps us build our reserves for our hosting and support of South Oakland Shelter. Activities throughout 2017: February: Members served at the Pi Beta Phi National Day of Service literacy/free book event in Detroit. March: Northbrook hosted the Grace Commons art exhibit, Im/Migration: Stations of the Cross. The exhibit was brought in from Chicago and was open to the public. We also hosted a One World Sunday celebration featuring residents and the Executive Director of Freedom House as well as a representative from Samaratas (formerly Lutheran Social Services) who works with immigrant support services. We showed the documentary, Locked in a Box, about immigration detention centers and enjoyed our popular international potluck with family heritage dishes. April: A great group of volunteers participated in Rebuilding Together s annual National Rebuilding Day by working on a home in Southfield. May-June: We hosted SOS guests at Northbrook in late May and early June. We also held a linen drive to add new stock for SOS. June: We participated in the Presbytery of Detroit Cereal for Summer Drive to provide breakfast items for hungry children in Detroit. We also collected general household supplies and cooking staples for Freedom House. September: Golf Outing, dinner, and auction fundraiser event participation in support of Second Mile Center in Detroit October: Max Van de Vyver and his family began holding a shoe drive for the organization Soles 4 Souls which is ongoing during November: Pantry food collection for The Welcome Inn of South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless. December: Annual Angel Tree to share with families of Oakland Family Services, those served by Fort Street Presbyterian Church s Clothing Closet, and the residents of A Place of Refuge in Southfield. Financial generosity is necessary to the work we do, but it also takes many hours of hands-on mission ministry to serve as we are called by Christ. In addition to those who make donations, many dozens of Northbrook members have contributed their time and talent to the initiatives listed above. Many thanks to the Northbrook family for your continued support and partnership. In Shared Faith, Winnie Davies-Hancock, Chair NOMINATING COMMITTEE The 2017 Nominating Committee consisted of Paulette Lein, Sue Koss, Terri Hurbis, Grant Burnham, Penny Willey and Linda Hermes. We met, along with staff members Marjorie Wilhelmi and Sherrill Heinrichs, to 2017 Annual Report 12

14 nominate members to the office of Elder and Deacon, and to serve on the Nominating Committee. Grant Burnham, Chair PERSONNEL COMMITTEE In early 2017, Northbrook s Session decided that to more effectively reach out to unchurched neighbors in our community, we should add a new full-time, ordained position on our staff focused on outreach ministries. The Personnel Committee created a search committee (thanks to Abby Adair, Kathy Bauhof, Bill Jordan, Paulette Lein, Mike Wicker and Penny Willey) to find and interview good candidates and recommend a person for this position. We were extremely pleased that this search led to Jacqueline Spycher being hired by Session as our new Assistant Pastor. Lynn Stephenson retired from his position on our custodial staff in mid The Personnel Committee searched for a replacement, ultimately hiring Carlton Lewis as our new custodian. As we enter 2018, we are blessed by a dedicated and hard working staff led by our Pastor, Marjorie Wilhelmi, Jackie Spycher Assistant Pastor, Sherrill Heinrichs Congregational Care Coordinator, Becky Bachand Administrative Secretary, Kathy Brooks - Financial Secretary; our music staff led by Angel Gippert Director, Dan Gross Assistant Music Director, and Pete Zajicek; Ken Stetson Youth Director, Kerry Callaghan Preschool Director; and our custodial staff Larry Brown, Carlton Lewis, Pierce Broadwell and Sue Jaques. They all work hard to insure continuity in our programs, our worship and the overall operations within the church. The Northbrook youth and adult volunteers enjoyed a faith-filled and exciting Our programs successfully connected to our youth, creating life-changing ministry and support, with a strong and steadfast community of youth, adult advisors and parents. We focused specifically on offering our youth skills and opportunities to build independence, social skills and positive mental health, a break from technology, an affirming life outlook, a sense of community, and the Christian values of compassion, love, inclusion and acceptance. In 2017, our programming included retreats, LOGOS, Sunday youth group, 1Friday, mission activities, Mission Trip, Summer Camp and lock-ins. This was facilitated by our Youth Director, Ken Stetson, and youth advisors Karen Vander Weide, Joyce Vander Weide, Dave Tengler, Sean Mueller, Emily Stetson and Chris Lueck. We were especially excited with the completion of the new Fellowship Hall renovations and look forward to the opportunities it brings us in 2018! 2017 Annual Report 13

15 The January 2017 winter retreat included a group of 22 youth and adults who traveled to SpringHill for a weekend of contemporary worship and winter fun. For the October fall retreat, a group of 29 youth and adults traveled to Loon Lake Lutheran Retreat Center for a faith-filled weekend at the most beautiful place in Michigan! We continue to look forward to these awesome weekends for discussion, worship, group building and fun. The summer of 2017 brought two of our strongest and most life-changing ministries: our Senior High Mission Trip and Northbrook Summer Camp. For Mission Trip, 18 high school students and adult advisors spent a week in Cannon Falls, MN performing home repairs, painting, and building porches and wheelchair ramps for those in need. The trip also included an overnight stop at Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church in Chicago and a plunge in Lake Michigan! This experience continues to change lives, not only for the residents we help, but also the amazing youth and adults who come on the trip. Northbrook Summer Camp enjoyed its 34th summer of faith, fun, and community for 100 children and adult counselors marked the first year of our move from Loon Lake Lutheran Retreat Center to Camp Timbers in West Branch, MI. Our first year at Camp Timbers was a success, and we look forward to continuing our long-standing camp tradition with them in A special thank you to everyone who contributed to our youth programs with their time, financial donations and support. Thanks to all the members at Northbrook, we are able to continue our impactful youth programs for the surrounding community. We ask for your continued support to make 2018 an amazing year with tons of new stories and adventures! God Bless, Kenny Stetson, Youth Director PRESCHOOL Northbrook Preschool currently has 16 four year olds who attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We have 12 of these students stay until 2:00 on these days. Of the 16 kids, we have 4 who attend on Tuesday and Thursday. We have 19, two and a half year olds and three year olds who attend on Tuesday and Thursday. Of the 19 who attend on TTH, we have 8 who are also attending on Wednesday in the Nursery. We started accepting the younger 2 ½ year olds to get our numbers up. This year, we did not have to accept as many due to the larger number of 3 year olds who signed up. The numbers of actual 3 year olds has increased this year with only two 2 1/2 year olds. We have also offered the 3 year olds an option to stay for lunch on Tuesday and Thursday which has increased our numbers. Parents like flexibility and options for their kids. Our enrollment has been increasing due to parents of current students recommending us to their friends. This year, I am starting my fourth year as Director. Tricia LaSota continues on as Assistant Director. We are both here five days a week. Barb Borich also continues to work 5 days a week. Nancy Murphy, Lori Sandercock and Kristen Weber are also back this year. We feel confident that our program is maintaining its excellent reputation, and we feel that our numbers will remain up next year. We continue to promote our program and will be attending various preschool information nights at local libraries. We will also continue to walk in the Beverly Hills annual Memorial Parade. Our families who have their children attend our program are our biggest advocates. The success of our school is a direct result of the facilities, church support and staff. Kathy and Becky continue to be a wonderful help. We really appreciate all they do for us. We also appreciate the guidance that Marjorie has been giving us over the last few years. Larry is always helpful with maintaining our classrooms and equipment. Sue has continued the daily cleaning of the classrooms and has done a wonderful job Annual Report 14

16 The Preschool and its staff continue to maintain our outstanding reputation in the community. We have many students and their siblings returning next year. We continue to promote our wonderful program and we are very optimistic that our enrollment will increase next year. Sincerely, Kerry Callaghan, Director WORSHIP & MUSIC COMMITTEE It was an exciting year at Northbrook as we continued to seek new and different ways to celebrate, explore and worship God (highlights below). By far our most noteworthy event, however, was the hiring of now Rev. Jackie Spycher as Assistant Pastor. Jackie joined Northbrook staff in early October and quickly jumped in contributing in countless ways, with her focus being outreach to those with spiritual needs who might not want organized religion. Stay tuned for great things to continue in 2018! Here are some highlights: January 19, participated in Ecumenical Service of Prayer for Christian Unity at St. Regis. Lent for 2 weeks in early March, we hosted the Im/Migration: Stations of the Cross Art Exhibit, curated by Grace Commons in Chicago. The 15 Stations of the Cross represented a series of significant moments in Jesus last day, contemplating each station through the lens of immigration and migration, featuring 11 pieces of original artwork. July Northbrook hosted the Ugandan Kids Choir, a group of 10 children who brought a message of hope, sharing the power of God s love through traditional music and dance. These children come from the poorest parts of Uganda and are chosen for their enthusiasm, ability and dedication, all of which make them potential leaders when they return to their communities. November 19, Northbrook participated in Interfaith Thanksgiving Service Advent special series Angels Are Among Us #DoNotBeAfraid we looked at the stories that angels brought to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds, and contemplated what we can offer that will counteract a culture of fear to bring #morehope, #morepeace, #morejoy, #morelove to the world. Finally, we are so blessed to have a dedicated team providing our Sunday worship. Deep gratitude to those who fill our hearts with music: the choir, under the direction of Angel Gippert; Dan Gross & Pete Zajicek, who add great variety and depth to our music experience, and Carl Gippert, accompanying the choir. I would also like to thank our wonderful group of people who help us every week, including Bill Travis with sanctuary door greeters, our ushers (organized faithfully by Barb and Bill Stetson), our Deacons for Communion preparation and serving (along with the elders), our sound techs (Dave Vander Weide and Michael Bauhof), our audiovisual team (Bill Jordan, Bryan Adair, Jeff Wilhelmi and Bozenna Johnson), and the many others who have helped in so many ways to enhance our worship services throughout the year. 17 FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT 2017 Review We are happy to report that for 2017 we were able to beat our forecasted budget! While contributions fell short by $4,274, we were able to make up and exceed the difference with a $10,000 Preschool donation, the $15,665 Season of Giving FUNdraiser, and the annual 5% transfer from the MacKay Endowment Fund. On top of this, expenses were held in line and came in under budget by $3,318. After these capital expenditures, the North Family Fund had a year-end balance of $126,354. In addition, memorial gifts from the Hothem Family Fund covered renovation of our women s restroom. Our other Funds grew substantially because of strong market returns, which averaged about 14% in Per policy, we transferred 5% of the MacKay Endowment and 5% of the Buildings & Grounds Growth Endowment to our Reserve Funds, where they remain invested and accessible for future needs. 18 2017 Audit A financial audit was completed in 2017 by Dorothy Warren and Dorothea Clarke. No major concerns were found, but their suggestions resulted in eliminating obsolete accounts and more closely matching budgets with actual expenses Budget We have a balanced Operating Budget for 2018, comprised of routine Operating Revenues and Expenses of $440,400. The majority of our Operating Budget is funded by your annual Contributions to Northbrook. The chart below summarizes pledged and non-pledged Contributions. Our 2018 budget, summarized below and shown on Attachment 1, reflects an expected drop in Revenue, but Expenses have been held very close to 2017 levels, so that overall we expect a balanced budget for our routine Operating needs. In 2017, we undertook $500,000 of renovations to our 50-year-old facility thanks to the North Family Fund and the Hothem Family Fund. For 2018, we expect to use the North Fund for continued work, as well as Colville Memorial Funds to replace our copier and A/V systems. The 5% annual transfer from the MacKay Endowment, $30,805 in 2018, will continue to build the Operating Reserve. Apart from the Operating Budget, the MacKay Endowment will fund our Assistant Pastor s position (approximately $73,500 for salary & benefits, overhead, and outreach programming). The annual 5% transfer from the B&G Growth Endowment will add $19,800 to the B&G Contingency Reserve.
