2 Rejoicing in God s Mercy, Together in Christ The theme of our 2016 Annual Diocesan Appeal, Rejoicing in God s Mercy, Together in Christ, reflects the call of Pope Francis for an Extraordinary Jubilee to celebrate God s great and wonderful gift of mercy. The Holy Year of Mercy began on last month s Feast of the Immaculate Conception and extends to the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 20. In announcing this Jubilee Year, the Holy Father proclaimed that the Church is the house that welcomes all and refuses no one. This indeed is a mark of the Diocese of San Jose, of its 54 missions and parishes and of each of you. Together we form a local Church rooted in justice, mercy, love and peace. Mindful of the call to be merciful just as our heavenly Father is merciful (cf. Matthew 6:36), I ask again for your support of our Annual Diocesan Appeal. Your gift to the ADA provides for the continuing work of the Church to show the loving face of God especially to those who are most in need. We do this through our catechetical, liturgical, educational and social justice ministries. We do this because you make all of these good works possible. We will continue to do this because of your support of this year s ADA. 3 ADA in Action: Fr. Joe Kim Diocesan Director of Vocations and Evangelization Fr. Joe Kim works full time as the Director of Vocations as well as the Director of Evangelization for the Diocese of San Jose. When asked about Evangelization and Pope Francis Year of Mercy, Fr. Joe quotes St. Paul, God is rich in mercy. The Year of Mercy is about receiving God and how God s love touches our misery. Fr. Joe states, It is about sharing the story of how God s love touches our lives in a very positive way. The Diocese is growing and as a local church we must focus on the mission of how we form disciples says Fr. Joe. The Annual Diocesan Appeal helps by offering financial support to the Office of Evangelization. Once again, Fr. Joe is candid, Evangelization is the original commission from Jesus Christ himself. One day, when we stand before our Lord we are going to want to say that we funded his commission and that we were agents of mercy by following His example and sharing our compassion.

4 ADA in Action: Terry Jelley Catholic Network to End Human Trafficking Terry Jelley is working in the Diocese of San Jose on the global problem of human trafficking, she believes it was meant to be. Starting as a flight attendant and then moving into management at American Airlines, Jelley moved to San Jose in 1986 and found her way to Saint Lawrence the Martyr Church, where she played the piano at Mass. Her involvement in her church led to graduating from the Institute of Leadership in Ministry (ILM) and eventually a Masters degree in Spirituality from Santa Clara University. Living my faith was my purpose in life. I found my faith working in social ministry, Jelley said. With her background in the airlines Jelley worked to create awareness about human trafficking among airport workers and airline personnel. Attendees were taught to both recognize instances of human trafficking and how to report suspected instances. This awareness campaign is conducted at both San Francisco and San Jose airports. The fact that this all fell into place: a parish where she could meet the people that would help her grow in her faith and especially a Bishop that supported the mission to combat human trafficking and was vocal about his support all leads Terry Jelley to believe that she is where she is meant to be.

5 ADA in Action: Msgr. Joseph Milani Retired Priest Msgr. Joseph Milani speaks with a clear, strong voice which masks his 90 years. Milani was ordained in 1950 and retired in He is candid about how fortunate he is to have the excellent retirement benefits which he credits to Bishop DuMaine as well as Msgr. Tim O Brien, Msgr. John Sandersfeld and Msgr. Michael Mitchell; all whom he credits for establishing the plan in the formative years of the Diocese of San Jose. He understands it could have been very different. Beyond the standard medical benefits and supplemental plans for Medicare, the retirement benefits also include a personal care giver. Donna Bell, a registered nurse, has been on board to help retired priests for the past 10 years. Bell acts as a nurse, a case manager, a sounding board and a friend to many of our retired priests, including Msgr. Milani. ADA funds support our retired priests and after all they have given it is the least we can do. As for Msgr. Milani, though retired for 20 years, he still says Mass on a monthly basis and helps out where he can.

6 Regocijándonos en la Misericordia de Dios, Juntos en Cristo El lema del Llamado Anual Diocesano para el año 2016: Regocijándonos en la Misericordia de Dios, Juntos en Cristo, refleja el mensaje del Papa Francisco para el Año Extraordinario del Jubileo, celebrando el inmenso y maravilloso regalo de la misericordia de Dios. El Año Santo de la Misericordia, comenzó con la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción del mes pasado y se extiende hasta el 20 de Noviembre, cuando celebramos la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Al anunciar el Año del Jubileo, el Santo Padre proclamó que la Iglesia es la casa que da la bienvenida a todos, sin rechazar a ninguno. Nuestra Diócesis de San José, acoge este mismo principio, con sus 54 misiones y parroquias y con cada uno de ustedes. De esta manera, todos juntos, somos la Iglesia local arraigada en justicia, misericordia, amor y paz. Escuchando y practicando el llamado a ser misericordiosos, así como lo es nuestro Padre del cielo, (cf. Mateo 6:36); yo les pido de nuevo su apoyo para nuestro Llamado Anual Diocesano de este año. Su regalo para el ADA provee los recursos que permiten a la Iglesia el seguir trabajando para ayudar a los que más lo necesitan en nombre de nuestro Señor. Esto se hace a través de los ministerios catequéticos, litúrgicos, educacionales y de justicia social. Ustedes, con su apoyo al ADA, hacen posible que todo esto se logre. 7 ADA en Acción: Terry Jelley Catholic Network to End Human Trafficking Terry Jelley está trabajando en la Diócesis de San José sobre la situación mundial de la trata de personas, ella cree que estaba destinado a eso. Comenzó como auxiliar de vuelo y luego paso a la administración en American Airlines, Jelley se trasladó a San José 1986 y encontró su camino en la Parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir, donde ella tocaba el piano en la Misa. A los asistentes les enseñó a reconocer los casos de trata de personas y cómo denunciar presuntos casos. Esta campaña de sensibilización se lleva a cabo en ambos aeropuertos de San Francisco y San José. El hecho es que todo cayó en su lugar. Una parroquia donde podía conocer a las personas que ayudaría a crecer en su fe y sobre todo un obispo que apoyó la misión de combatir la trata de personas una minoría que se hace oír. Todo conduce Terry Jelley creer que es donde está destinada a ser.

8 Hân Hoan trong Chúa Thương Xót, Đồng Hành cùng Đức Kitô Chủ đề của chương trình Giáo Phận Quyên Góp Hằng Năm ADA 2016, Hân Hoan trong Chúa Thương Xót, Đồng Hành cùng Đức Kitô, phản ánh lời kêu gọi của Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô về Năm Thánh Đặc Biệt để mừng món quà tuyệt vời và vĩ đại, là hồng ân Lòng Chúa Thương Xót. Năm Thánh Lòng Chúa Thương Xót đã khai mạc tháng trước vào ngày Lễ Đức Mẹ Vô Nhiễm Nguyên Tội và sẽ kéo dài cho đến Lễ Chúa Kitô Vua ngày 20 tháng 11 năm nay. Khi công bố Năm Thánh này, Đức Thánh Cha đã khẳng định rằng Giáo Hội là mái nhà nơi chào đón tất cả và không từ chối một ai. Đây thực sự là một biểu hiệu của Giáo Phận San Jose, của 54 giáo xứ trong giáo phận và của mỗi người chúng ta. Cùng nhau chúng ta hình thành một Giáo Hội địa phương, đâm rễ sâu trong công lý, lòng thương xót, tình yêu thương và sự bình an. Lưu tâm đến lời Chúa mời gọi: hãy có lòng thương xót như Cha trên trời là đấng xót thương (x Mt 6:36), tôi xin một lần nữa kêu gọi sự hỗ trợ của quý ông bà anh chị em cho chương trình Quyên Góp Hằng Năm của giáo phận chúng ta. Món quà đóng góp cho ADA của quý vị giúp Giáo Hội tiếp tục phục vụ để hiển lộ dung mạo của Thiên Chúa yêu thương, đặc biệt cho những người đang có nhu cầu khẩn thiết nhất. Chúng ta làm điều này qua các mục vụ giáo lý, phụng vụ, giáo dục và công lý xã hội. Chúng ta làm điều này vì chính sự đóng góp của quý ông bà anh chị em khiến cho tất cả những công việc tốt đẹp này có thể thực hiện. 9 ADA Hành Động: Cha Joe Kim Giám đốc Ơn Gọi và Giám đốc Truyền giáo của Giáo Phận San Jose Cha Joe Kim làm việc toàn thời gian là Giám đốc Ơn Gọi và Giám đốc Truyền giáo của Giáo Phận San Jose. Khi được hỏi về Truyền giáo và Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót của Đức Giáo Hoàng Phanxicô, Cha Joe đã trích Thánh Phaolô, Thiên Chúa giàu lòng thương xót. Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót là để nhận ra lòng thương xót củathiên Chúa và tình yêu của Thiên Chúa chạm đến sự đau khổ của chúng ta như thế nào. Cha Joe nói: Đó là việc chia sẻ những câu chuyện tình yêu của Thiên Chúa chạm đến cuộc sống của chúng ta cách tích cực như thế nào. Giáo phận đang phát triển và là một giáo hội địa phương, chúng ta phải tập trung vào sứ mạng đào tạo những môn đệ của Chúa, Cha Joe nói. In 1777 the Franciscan Fathers founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís which later became Saint Clare parish. More than 590,000 Santa Clara County residents identify themselves as Catholic.
