1 JPC Newsletter A Letter From Pastor Andy Dear Jerusalem Church members and friends, As we enter fall I want to bring your attention to a few goings-on at JPC. This Sunday is the beginning of Sunday school for grade-school age children; we are still in need for a few more Sunday school teachers, so if you are willing to teach one Sunday everyother month, please speak with Andy (The lessons are already prepared). The confirmation class is starting on September 23rd with an organizational meeting following worship for the confirmands, their parents, and the class sponsors. (Sunday school and confirmation will both be meeting after worship.) Another Sunday morning development is the possible restructuring of volunteer duties including splitting ushering/greeting duties from coffee hosting duties. No decisions have been made regarding that, but the worship committee is exploring options to allow for more flexibility. Finally, this month also includes some specific work for my doctoral project. You may remember that my studies focus on stewardship, especially as the subject pertains to the ministry and mission of JPC. Throughout September and the first half of October I will be preaching on call stories from scripture. This series will include wellknown stories such as Moses and the burning bush, and the conversion of the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus. We will also look at a few stories that are not as famous; all of them will focus on the overarching theme of responding to God s call. I will also be holding a Saturday morning workshop in late September or early October. The subject of the event will be on generations theory, as in, how people born in different decades see the world differently. We will also look at how different generations perspectives impact the church s ministry and our attitudes towards faith and each other. I have yet to select a date for the workshop but will send out an announcing it when that is known. May the Peace of Christ, which passes all understanding, be with you, Pastor Andy Page 1
2 Thank You A HUGE thank you to everyone who participated in making the 22 nd Annual Donna Lexa Memorial Art Fair another wonderful success. We had beautiful weather, the food was a big hit, the artists were happy, the buyers loved the art work, and the non-profits were thrilled to be able to tell their stories to our community. Our musicians donated their gifts of music and the entire day was delightful with a great sense of community. This amazing event could not happen without the efforts of the entire art fair committee and all members of JPC who make the magic happen. This is such a giving congregation and it is a honor to be a part of this organization that gives of itself so freely. This year felt like the best art fair we have ever had and you can be very proud of the difference JPC has made to the organizations that benefit from your efforts. You have shown others how to be the Hands and Feet of Christ. Undies Sunday The Hope Center needs underwear for both men and women. Also cash can be donated or checks written (with Undies Sunday noted in the memo ). Family Game Night Returns This popular monthly fellowship event returns on Tuesday September 18 with a 5:30 pm supper followed by a variety of table games. Members and friends are asked to sign up at church to assist our volunteer chefs. Hope to see you there. Page 2
3 Book Sale Results Hi All, Congratulations on another great used book sale! Yesterday we removed the remaining books from the fellowship hall and took them to Half- Price Books. We received $250 from HPB! So our total is: $ day of sale $20 - day after the sale $250 - HPB = $1480 (Last year was $1027 so we increased our income by 44% ) This money will be donated to the Mission fund and is used in projects like installing water wells in Africa, purchasing heifers for humanity and helping to fund work trips. Thanks to all who helped in transporting, sorting and selling books. Auction Coming Soon The church auction is coming! It will be held on Sunday, November 18 th, The coffee hour and displayed auction items will be held in the fellowship hall directly following the church service. Bidding will follow. The Deacons will be providing a light lunch. Our guest auctioneer, Mark Stalhut, will be here again to make this a successful event! Please note that this is not a Packer Sunday!! We need everyone s help with donations and with the bidding to help make this our biggest auction ever! Some of the items that have been donated in the past are catered and specialty dinners, athletic tickets, four season cakes, pies, specialty baskets, theater tickets, services, etc. Let your Imagination run wild!! Think of what your talents are and come up with an item or two to donate that someone else would want to purchase. If you know of a restaurant or business that might be willing to donate something, go see them too! The only things we discourage are used items such as appliances, used clothing, etc. If you have any questions feel free to call us. Please let us know as soon as you decide what you are willing to donate. You can us with your suggestion, drop a note in the offering plate, or just call. We need a detailed description of the item or items and the value. We will begin putting our list together early so that you know the items we have and can keep you up to date on the donations!
