1 Catechetical Sunday 2008 The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Today we recognize those who are engaged in the ministry of religious formation; from those who work with the youngest children to those who are companions for adults seeking to know more about their faith. Catechetical Ministry is one of the ways in which we model generosity and gratitude. 3 The Pastor s Mutterings As I write these words, I am very much looking forward to the St. Barnabas Fall Family Festival. It has been, and will be again this weekend, a wonderful celebration of the bonds that unite us as a parish community. Young and old, male and female, we are united in Christ as a parish family and believers in Christ by a bond that is deeper than blood. It is this critical relationship that Jesus speaks about in today s Gospel. The workers who got up early and labored all day in the searing heat have a legitimate grievance to file with the International Brotherhood of Grape Harvesters. But Jesus is not talking about labor relations, or social justice. He is trying to say something about God s family, about the difference between a contract and a covenant. A contract is a binding legal obligation designed to protect the rights of one party from being neglected or infringed upon by another. A contract is an end in itself, and nothing more is expected. It defines the bare minimum of a relationship. But a covenant is an agreement that is made out of love. It requires no negotiation of salary or benefits. A covenant represents a loving relationship, entered into freely, with room to grow in generosity and mutual support. God is in a covenant relationship with us. God s relationship with us is so much deeper than a contractual obligation. We don t earn God s love like an hourly wage. We don t earn our salvation by being good. God s love and grace is simply there for us to accept and respond to. This is very difficult to understand because it is so ingrained in us that we get what we pay for, and we reap what we sow. It might help to imagine that you are the parents of three children, ages three, six, and nine. Do you love your nine-year-old three child times as much as your three-year-old, or your middle child twice as much? Do you love your younger children less because they re not as much help with the household chores? You would surely reply, Of course not. That s ridiculous. We re a family. What Jesus teaches can take our breath away: The family of God s people, and the parish family of St. Barnabas, are not built around contracts. Family is about covenant. God is in covenant with us, and we are in covenant with each other. Seniority doesn t count. Time clocks don t matter. All that matters is God s generosity, which is prodigal, abundant, generous, and ever-present. So, come early or come late! There will be plenty of food, music, fun, and friendship at the St. Barnabas Fall Festival. And it will be one of our best opportunities to accept the Lord s invitation to come into the vineyard, and rejoice in our covenant with God and each other.

5 Human Concerns ST. BARNABAS RESPECT LIFE The next meting of the St. Barnabas Respect Life Group will be on Sunday, September 28, at 1:00 p.m. in the Church Hall (basement). October is national "Respect Life Month." Our parish will celebrate Respect Life Sunday at the 12:00 noon Mass on October 5. All are invited! After all of the Masses on October 4 and 5, baby bottles will be available at all exits of the church and in the narthex. We encourage you to take a bottle home and, over the course of six weeks, fill it with spare change for the Women's Center. If you aren't able to pick up a bottle at that time, contact Beth Devane ( or bdevane@aol.com) and we will deliver one to you. Please return the bottles before any of the Masses on November 15 and 16. On Saturday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m., Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S. 6 Spiritual Life COMMUNION UNDER BOTH KINDS Since the full sign of sharing communion under both kinds has been restored to us, people have raised questions about how healthy or unhealthy this practice might be. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops regularly contacts the Public Health Service Centers for Disease Control for the latest information concerning this issue. The CDC has never recommended to the USCCB that the Catholic Church drop the practice because of health risks. However, it has never stated that the practice is absolutely risk-free either. The CDC has indicated there is no clinical evidence that any life-threatening pathogens are transmitted by sharing the cup. The USCCB, satisfied that there are no major risks involved, encourages the faithful to participate in this full sign of the Eucharist, but with common sense: Ministers must wipe the rim of the cup between communicants, and any communicant who has an infectious illness, feels he or she is coming down with an infectious illness, or is in any way immune-compromised should refrain from taking the cup.
