Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early church, which marks the day we call The Birthday of the Church! In the lesson for this day, many people were gathered in Jerusalem when the winds, flames and tongues came down in a powerful way. Pentecost marks the end of the 50 days of Easter and it is a most appropriate day for baptisms and new members. At our 9:15 service we will confirm 4 young people, including a young man from Faith UMC who has been learning alongside our students. At 11:15 we will baptize 2 children and welcome them into the community of faith. As the church of God at Epworth, we are blessed by children and youth who bring us their fresh perspective on faith and lead us in worship. We are glad you chose to worship with us today! NEXT SUNDAY, MAY 27, ST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST FOCAL LESSON: ROMANS 8:12-17; JOHN 3:1-17 PREACHER: REV. VICKY STARNES Transition Time at Epworth Every year, about this time, the United Methodist Church announces retirements, pastoral changes and ordinations. This year we have two of those events at Epworth. Rev. Glenn Catley came to serve at Epworth (moving from the pew to the pulpit) in 2016 and promised to work for one year as our part-time Interim Associate Pastor. We have been greatly blessed as Rev. Glenn Catley has led us through a Vision and Structure Process that has provided crucial change and leadership for our church. Thank you God! At the end of his first year, we begged him to stay one more year and he agreed but he was adamant on the ending date of June Rev. Glenn s last Sunday will be June 24 and we will honor him well that Sunday so please put it on your calendar and stay tuned for details. Because of Rev. Glenn Catley s upcoming departure, the SPRC and Governing Board decided in January 2018 to ask the Peninsula-Delaware Conference of the UMC for an associate pastor appointment. We are thrilled to share that Rev. Todd Shultz, from Bethesda UMC in Middletown, will begin serving as our Associate Pastor on July 1, Todd and his wife, Linda, reside in Lewes, DE. Todd is a retired DuPont employee, who has been serving in ministry for several years. He has met with Rev. Vicky Starnes and the staff and is very eager to get started in ministry at Epworth, however, his pastorate at Bethesda UMC continued through June. Please visit our website for more information on Rev. Todd Shultz. Interested in Becoming a Member of the Epworth Church Family? If you would like to become a member, our next Belongings Class will be on Saturday, May 19 from 1:00 4:30 p.m. You will have the opportunity to get to know our pastors in a small group setting, along with finding out how Epworth reaches out to our community. FYI: Should you have a Pastoral Care Emergency on the weekend, our Care Line Phone Number is Like to Pray? Epworth s Pastoral Care Team needs Volunteers! Life is good here at Epworth Church! But what if you are sick, in the hospital, homebound, receiving hospice care; what happens to your spiritual life then? Who will pray with you and your loved ones, how will you receive communion? Your church family feels a commitment to each individual s spiritual and emotional well-being. Our Pastoral Care volunteers play an essential role in enriching the spiritual lives of members of our congregation when they are sick, homebound or unable to attend church, and in need of spiritual prayers and healing. You could make a difference in someone's day by providing prayerful companionship. Volunteers in this area have a strong interest in prayer, are very caring with heartfelt sincerity, have patience and are able to offer a respectful, sympathetic and comforting attitude with members of our church and their family members who are in need of prayerful companionship! Epworth s Pastoral Care Ministry needs help! If you feel this may be something you are interested in, please call or Mickie at or mmcmanamon@eumcrb.org. Let s talk and see if this ministry will bless you and members of our church in spiritual need! WINGS (Women IN God s Service) Women IN God s Service is looking for new members. Out next meeting is Monday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m. in the Baker Lounge. PATHWAYS to Transformation The Journey Continues Epworth United Methodist Church, Wednesdays, 9:30 11:00 a.m., June 13 August 1. How are we preparing our spiritual soil for the growth of the seeds of transformation? These seeds are planted in each and all of us. But they must be fed, watered and nurtured before they can grow, bear fruit and be harvested. But how can we provide this nurturing? Christ became man in order to reveal to us our own true nature and to empower us to live as children of God. His life serves as a model. He is the way, the truth and the light/life. Thomas Merton described this transformation in these words: In perfect humility all selfishness disappears and your soul no longer lives for itself or in itself for God.it is lost and submerged in Him and transformed into Him. [from New Seeds of Contemplation by Merton] This weekly dialogue will explore the meaning of this transformation and how we can ready our soil for this incredible spiritual becoming, which is our gift from God and our ultimate purpose here on earth. We are here to make our world a better place. Look around! How are we doing? TO REGISTER, call Toni Worsham at Short Takes Inviting All, Finding Your Place, Connecting to God, Demonstrating Care
