1 Epworth: a United Methodist Church Newsletter E-NEWS ~ August 2016 The CARE Line Oh how good I feel when I hear a song or a prayer that soothes my hurting soul! How many of you remember a song that was really popular by Celine Dion and Josh Groban, The Prayer? The lyrics, written by Carole Bayer Sager and David Foster, really speak to me when I find myself in need of special care for my scared, worried, or hurting soul/heart! Let this be our prayer As we go our way Lead us to a place Guide us with your Grace To a place where we'll be safe I don t know about you, but Celine or Josh s phone number is not programmed into my cell phone that I can call on them when I am in need of Pastoral Care. And, isn t that what those lyrics are really about - Pastoral Care Dear Lord, be my guide through this troublesome time. Guide me with your Grace to that place where I know I will be safe! Epworth s Pastoral Care Team wants to be with you during those times when your soul is scared, broken and hurting. We know there are times when you are traveling through a difficult situation alone because you choose to do so. However, more often than any of us like, there are those who want support, yet do not receive it they fall through the cracks. Epworth now has The Care Line, a cell phone for those times when the UNEXPECTED comes into your life and Pastoral Care is wanted. When you call, the Pastoral Care Team will know of your need and will respond! Examples of UNEXPECTED life events: An unscheduled hospital visit for treatment, surgery You receive news of a family member s death A person in hospice care is close to death Your husband, wife, child or significant other dies An accident or house fire The Pastoral Care Team will respond as soon as possible to bring prayer, grace and a reminder that God is with us always and will guide us to that safe place in him. I pray we'll find your light And hold it in our hearts When stars go out each night Let this be our prayer When shadows fill our day Lead us to a place Guide us with your grace Give us faith so we'll be safe. Caring and serving together in Christ, Mickie McManamon, Caring Ministries Director Please stop by the office or look in the narthex on Sundays for: a Care Line Magnet for your refrigerator and a Care Line Wallet Card for each family member. Sunday School News Summer Sunday school schedule: August 7 and 21 Join us at the 9:15 service for Sunday school during the summer. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Betsy Plowman at United Methodist Women Reading Program: United Methodist Women are still looking for women to read 5 books in 2016 to help Epworth UMW and its UMW Reading Program. You just need to read one book from each of the 5 Categories, Education for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing For Community, Social Action and Spiritual Growth and fill out a report form. The 2016 list is on the small shelf near the windows in Branford Lounge or online (UMW Reading 2016). You may include books from the lists back to 2011.You may borrow books from the shelf and return them for the next reader. If you read a youth book, you would need to sign that out with the Children's Library. There is also a list of the books that are available in the Delaware Library System. Wendy shared a review: Thanks to Teri Moore for donating books to the UMW Reading program. I just finished" Coaltown Jesus" (2016 Spiritual growth- Youth) donated by Teri. Jesus comes to visit a young boy, Walker, trying to deal with the death of his brother and his Mother's grief. Jesus doesn't answer all of his questions but walks with him through this difficult time. This is a quick but powerful read. Linda Gregory also shared a review: I just finished reading"bully.com" by Joe Lawlor (2015 Nurturing For Community-Youth). This book is an easy read. It is geared toward 5th grade and above. I loved the message about how harmful bullying can be. This would be a great book to share with a young person. Maybe grandma and grandchild could discuss the topic or it would be a good Sunday school topic to read and discuss. I hope when you think of a book for the beach, pool or porch this summer, you will read some from the UMW Reading List. These books are interesting, informative and lead us to spiritual topics, usually concerning women and youth. Please contact one of us on the committee and we will help get you started. If you are already on the Epworth UMW Reading list and need a suggestion, contact us, as well. Happy Reading! 5 Peace Week Delaware: September Since the violence in our world and in our communities is a growing concern, the Social Justice Committee is helping create Peace Week Delaware in Rehoboth, Lewes and surrounding areas. Peace-loving folks across our state will participate in a series of events raising awareness and hope for peace in our communities, nation, and world. The overall purpose of Peace Week Delaware is to shift attitudes and actions of people to favor peace over violence. We hope to feature children s peace art, peace vigils and marches, and community forums. Joining this effort is a chance to actively promote peace in our community and the state. If you are interested in joining this effort, give Wave Starnes, a call. M o r e i n f o r m a t i o n i s a t Stewardship: Thanks to everyone who has participated in Grocery Card Program. If you haven t yet purchased your gift cards please consider doing so this week. Here is how it works: We have $25.00 cards for Food Lion, Safeway and Acme. We have $50.00 cards for Giant. We also have cards for Starbucks and will be adding others as time goes on. This is a great way to help the Church without costing you any money you wouldn t already spend. You purchase the card for face value. The Church receives a discount on the card from the store. So it costs you nothing extra!! A win-win for the you and the Church. If you have any questions please stop by the table in the Narthex. Again, a big thank you to all who have supported this and continue to support it. Giant, Acme, Food Lion, and Safeway. STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITY One way to give to Epworth is via hundreds of Online Merchants. If you shop online you may already be using a participating merchant and if you join shopepworth, every time you shop online the merchant will send a referral check to Epworth. It is really easy to do, too. Once you join, your computer will do all the work- automatically. Yes, automatically. shopepworth is part of the UMCmarket EPWORTH WEBPAGES eumcrb.org caring.eumcrb.org preschool.eumcrb.org Pathway Pages ~ August 2016
6 Social Justice: Fair trade coffee, teas, chocolate bars, and olive oil products are sold by the Social Justice Pathway the first Sunday of every month. Look for the fair trade sales table in Fellowship Hall from 8:45 to 11:30 a.m. Social Justice Pathway sales of fair trade products is through the Coffee Project of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Approximately 15 cents of each pound of Equal Exchange fair trade products is donated to UMCOR. Despite the Coffee Project name, the effort now encompasses the full range of Equal Exchange products sold by participating United Methodist congregations. UMCOR is now actively involved in disaster response for the June 23 and 24 floods in West Virginia that left thousands of people in the dark, damaged hundreds of homes and killed 23 people. Soon after the flood, Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball, of the West Virginia Annual Conference, toured communities h a r d h i t b y f l o o d i n g w i t h representatives of UMCOR and other conference staff. Cathy Earl, UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response program manager, noted that at least nine United Methodist churches were damaged in the floods. But that didn t stop the people of the United Methodist Church from responding to their neighbors. Food, water, and relief supplies were offered with a compassion I can only describe as easy. Ms. Earl was in West Virginia to support the conference s planning for recovery ministries. United Methodist response was kick started by UMCOR assistance with Conference disaster preparedness training and establishment of a depot for relief supplies before June tragedy. After the flood, UMCOR provided an emergency grant to help with relief work in the affected communities. UMCOR is also involved with recovery in southern and southeastern Virginia from eight tornadoes that struck on February 24 taking four lives, wounding dozens, and damaging or destroying 400 homes. Those interested in making a special donation to UMCOR to assist with these efforts in Virginia and West Virginia may designate their gift for UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response, Advance No , which helps with disasters and crises across the United States. More information at UMCOR is also involved with international disaster response. One is example is UMCOR s work with other relief organizations to provide emergency food relief, much-needed hygiene kits, and cash disbursement to allow survivors to meet their own emergency priorities following the strike of Cyclone Roanu in Bangladesh in May of this year. That storm killed 27 and displaced half a million people, especially in the coastal communities of Bangladesh. Of course, your continued purchase of Equal Exchange fair trade products at Epworth helps UMCOR in a small way each month! Pathway Pages ~ August 2016

12 Food Truck Friday continues on Thursdays Food Truck Friday has moved to Thursday in an effort to avoid weekend traffic. A number of people have discovered the Junction & Breakwater Trail as a way of doing the same. "Summer is a game changer," says organizer, Susan Selph. "Fortunately Epworth is a great venue and we have the ability to set up tables outside in the shade and also inside in the air conditioning." The line-up of vendors continues to expand. The two newest are Delicious Craving, serving mostly Greek cuisine like khebabs and gyros, and Getta Pizza This, which offers wood-fired, plant-based pizza. Cultural food diversity is driving force behind Food Truck Friday. Food Truck Friday is a fundraiser for The Food & Love Soup Kitchen, Epworth Skate Park, and Epworth UMC. The events are held from 4 pm to 8 pm on the second and fourth Thursday in July and August. In September, the event will return to Fridays.
