2 a United Methodist Church 11:15 a.m. Worship Service Sunday, March 13, th Sunday of Lent (Year C) Welcome to Epworth! Today we come celebrating the 5 th Sunday in lent. As we continue our journey along the footsteps of Jesus, we encounter a mission. It s the mission to reach out to those whom Jesus loves but throughout the history of the world have become the lost, the least, and the forgotten people of human society. Jesus meets a woman at the well, he cures the blind, he warns us of seeking out riches, and he befriends sinners. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus teaches us through words and actions how He defines His Church. His Church is not a gathering hall for music and teachings, but it s a gathering of people who share the Gospel message of love, grace, and mercy through Jesus Christ to the poor, sinners, and the outcasts. The Practice of Radical Hospitality... "Hospitality means we pray, plan, prepare, and work toward the purpose of helping others receive what we have received in Christ. Hospitality is a quality of spiritual initiative, the practice of an active and genuine love, a graciousness unaffected by self-interest, an opening of ourselves and our faith community to receive others. Radical hospitality offers a surprising and unexpected quality of depth and authenticity in caring for one another and guests...and surprises newcomers with a glimpse of the unmerited gracious love of God that they see in Christ." 5 LUNCH BUNCH RESUMES This Wednesday, March 16, the Lunch Bunch meets at 11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. The Preschool children will be entertaining. NEEDED: VIDEOGRAPHER AND EDITOR! Epworth has a wonderful video camera, and many messages we want to capture. If you have videographer skills and are willing to share your time helping your church in a powerful way please Rev Vicky at vstarnes@eumcrb.org. Thanks! LISTENING POSTS PREPARE DELEGATES FOR GENERAL CONFERENCE Just three months from now, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church will take place in Portland, Oregon. The General Conference is our denomination's top legislative body for all matters affecting the United Methodist connection. Between 600 and 1,000 delegates from all over the world, half of them lay persons and half of them clergy, will meet to make important decisions about Methodism, its policies and its practices. The Peninsula-Delaware Conference (of which Epworth is a part) sends several lay and clergy delegates to this important meeting. Our local delegates want to hear what you think on the important issues facing the May General Conference. They invite you to come to one of the two Listening Posts to get a brief overview of the issues. You then will have time to ask questions or make a short statement on what concerns you most. The Listening Posts, both from 10:00 a.m.-noon, are on April 2 (Bethesda UMC in Middletown) and April 16 (Union Bridge UMC in Bridgeville). If you prefer to send comments, mail Delegation Chair, Kevin Goodwin, 440 Haystack Dr, Newark DE EPWORTH LOCKS DOORS FOR SAFETY Other than on Sundays, the only outside doors open are the Bayside doors (facing Rt. 1). Call the office, , if you need the handicapped entrance for access to Branford Lounge. FILM SCREENING/DISCUSSION ON THE UMC AND LGBTQ CLERGY AND CONGREGANTS Epworth s FIRE (Faithfully Inviting and Reconciling Everyone) organization in partnership with the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) of the UMC is sponsoring a screening of the documentary film, An Act of Love, on Sunday, April 24, in the Epworth sanctuary. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and is open to all. There is no admission charge. Donations will be accepted at the event and will go toward the costs of obtaining and showing the film. An Act of Love tells the story of the Rev. Frank Schaefer s religious trials for officiating his son s same-sex marriage and the ensuing controversy that made national headlines and continues to challenge the UMC s doctrine. FIRE and the RMN hope to inspire United Methodists to change the doctrine at the 2016 General Conference and embrace their LGBTQ clergy and congregants. Reconciling Ministries has created a campaign website rmnetwork.org/itstime to enable supporters and allies to share their stories and tell their General Conference delegates that It s Time for full LGBTQ inclusion in The United Methodist Church. NEW PRESCHOOL CLASS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR A Five Day Class for children ages 2-4, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. will be offered during the next school year by the Epworth Preschool. Curriculum will include, but not be limited to: the regular morning schedule, lunchtime, arts and crafts, age-appropriate math and science readiness skills, planned themes, cooking, music and exercise. An initial onetime supply fee of $300 plus $575 per month will cover costs. Class space will be limited. For more information call the Preschool Office, or Betsy at bplowman@eumcrb.org. INTERESTING READING TO ENCOURAGE AND EDUCATE The Reading Committee of Epworth s United Methodist Women has an Informational Table in the Narthex TODAY between services. Please stop by and learn about this exciting way to help the UMW and expand your reading horizons. Participating in the UMW Reading Program for 2016 means reading interesting books from five different categories which encourage and educate. Topics on Social Action, Spiritual Growth, Education for Mission, Leadership Development and Nurturing for Community are included. Plan I is to read one book from each category.
