Today we join United Methodist Churches across the country in celebrating Laity Sunday. Laity Sunday focuses on the celebration of the ministry of all Christians, especially those who aren t ministers of Word and sacrament. It offers a chance for members of all ages to pause and consider their own unique calling to ministry within the community of believers. The good news is that one does not have to do it alone! There is power in two or three (or more!). Even Jesus sent his disciples out in two s as they began their ministry. What is God calling YOU to do in the world today? And how might you be called to work with others to make ministry happen more effectively? 11:00 a.m. UMW Executive Meeting 3:00 p.m. Jesus in the Gospels 4:15 p.m. Trustees 6:30 p.m. Disciple II 6:30 p.m. Disciple I 9:00 a.m. Women s Bible Study 11:00 a.m. Caring Ministries 1:00 p.m. Cemetery Meeting 5:45 p.m. Missions Meeting 6:30 p.m. Disciple III 9:30 a.m. Staff Meeting 1:00 p.m. Card Making 3:00 p.m. Stephen Ministries 7:00 p.m. Choir Interested in Becoming a Member of the Epworth Church Family? You will be welcomed into membership as a part of our worship services on Sunday, November 20. In between the 9:15 & 11:15 services we will offer a tour of your new church and share some of the outreach our ministries do in the local community. We would love to have you join us! 5 October is Pastor Appreciation Month! Anytime is a good time to express appreciation for pastors, but that is especially true during Pastor Appreciation Month in October. Every October churches across North America give focused attention to appreciating their pastors in tangible ways. We will be celebrating Rev. Vicky and Rev. Glenn in a special way during worship on Sunday, October 16. However, you don t have to wait until then! The Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) encourages you to show your appreciation to our pastors throughout the entire month. Why not write them a note of encouragement? Or pray for them in a special way one day and let them know you are praying by sending them a quick message? Let s help them FEEL THE LOVE! The Best Is Yet To Come Were you one of the 16 who participated in Tom Starnes Chit Chat Group? If not, you missed some good laughs and some sure fire remedies the AMA and Readers Digest don t know about! There is always room for more here at Epworth on Tuesday, November 1 at 10:30 a.m. Hospitality Reaches Out The Hospitality Ministry Pathway seeks to provide an inviting and welcoming environment for all members and guests through a variety of services. One is providing light food and beverages on Sunday mornings to coincide with our worship services. We welcome new team members to join us in providing hospitality! Food donations are always welcome as well! For more info, or to join this Pathways Team, notify Noreen Strohmenger at or Noreenstrohmenger@gmail.com. Food Pantry Needed Items: Our food pantry is running low on these items: cold cereal; peanut butter & jelly, canned chili (with and without beans); canned meat-and-pasta dishes, such as Chef Boyardee brand; and canned fruit. Please place food donations in the shopping carts near our entrances. Thanks for helping us ease hunger in our community. Christmas is Coming Consider The (No Cost) Fundraiser Just think! Christmas is right around the corner.! Wouldn t it be great to Christmas shop and help the Church at the same time? Every Sunday we will be adding additional gift cards to sell at the Grocery card table. You can help by purchasing grocery cards along with Tanger Outlet Cards, Old Navy, Outback, CVS, Walgreens, Kmart and Starbucks. So whether it is a thank you for the neighbor who walks the dog or an outfit for your grandchild and a dinner card for your sister or to pay for your Christmas Joy gift card item.we can help make one stop shopping possible. All proceeds go to reduce our mortgage. Register to Vote RIGHT HERE! Epworth s Social Justice Pathway is registering voters TODAY, October 9. If you are a new voter, have moved within our community, or have moved to Delaware from out of state, you need to register in order to vote in the General Election in November. The deadline for doing so is October 15. Please stop by our table in the narthex or Fellowship Hall and take advantage of this convenient opportunity. Your vote matters! It s Time to Dine for Miriam s Table! On Thursday, October 27 th Dining Out for Miriam s Table will be at Confucius 57 Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE. ( ), starting at 4:00pm to 9:00pm for dinner. Confucius is generously donating 15% of proceeds to feed the children of the Congo. They are known for their specialty dishes, innovative items and universally popular Americanized dishes. Because of your ongoing support Miriam s Table is feeding over 300 children a day. Please come join us for an amazing meal and support our mission, an extension of the Congo Partnership of the Pen-Del Conference. Thank you so much for your support! For more information on this event or to become a sponsor please call Susie Keefer at Reaching Out, Celebrating and Living the Love of Christ in God s World.

Please contact Nettie Green for more information, or Campus Ministry Epworth s Campus Ministry program is seeking to update our list of Epworth college students as the school year begins. The goals of Campus Ministries are to let our students know they continue to be in our thoughts and prayers throughout the school year, and to send them a 'Care' package filled with goodies as they prepare for finals each semester. Please contact Kathy Shook by phone , or kshook@mchsi.com with the name of your student, the college he/she is attending, along with current mailing and addresses. Epworth Preschool Funding Information Epworth Preschool has been a mission of E.U.M.C. for 29 years, providing a nurturing, academic and Christian environment for children, ages 2-4. We are a nonprofit organization, relying on annual tuition and supply fees to cover our operating expenses. Epworth Preschool offers scholarship assistance to families, based on financial need and scholarship fund availability. Monthly fundraisers are held to help offset the difference in tuition costs and scholarships, and we also rely on the generosity of private donations from preschool families and friends. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation towards our scholarship fund, checks can be made to Epworth Preschool/Memo- Scholarship Fund and we will provide you with our tax I.D. number. Thank you! All of Us It Is Not Us And Them; It s All Of Us! Here is an interfaith opportunity developed by the Epworth Social Justice Pathway and the Seaside Jewish Community. The event on Sunday, November 6 will feature Sobia Choudri and Usman Sandhu. They and their family live in Dover and are practicing Muslims. She Sobia is a dentist; he Usman - is a residential builder. Both are active in Muslim and interfaith organizations. They will have a conversation with us regarding common threads between Islam, Judaism and Christianity as well as distinctions between these religions. The event will start at 2:30 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship. Sobia and Usman will offer their remarks starting at 3:00 p.m. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers. This promises to be an enlightening afternoon. Mark your calendar and join us at Epworth. Food Truck Friday October 14 Food Truck Friday will have extended hours on Friday, October 14. The event will run from noon to 7:00 p.m. Event planners hope to attract visitors who are in the area for The Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. Reconciling Ministries Bible Study Beginning on Monday, October 24, at 6:30 p.m., Epworth will be offering a 15-week Bible study based on the book God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality, by Jay Michaelson. In his book, the author argues that God versus Gay is a myth that is untrue, unsupported by Scripture, and contradicted every day by the lives of religious gay people and that instead, the Bible and centuries of religious teaching in Christian and Jewish traditions argue strongly for a policy of equality, inclusion and dignity for sexual minorities. The class will be presented in two segments, October 31-December 19 (excluding November 21), and from January 23-March 6, The Fall class will examine the affirmative biblical case that supports a policy of inclusion of LGBTQ people. The January-March focus will be on the seven biblical clobbering passages that have been used as justification for the adoption of discriminatory and exclusionary policies. The class is sponsored by Epworth s FIRE* team (*Forever Inviting and Reconciling Everyone). The co-facilitators are Scott Strickler, Judy Moore, and Rev. Bob Paulen. The class is open to everyone regardless of membership in or attendance at Epworth. Flyers and a sign-up sheet are available at the Faith Development Table in the narthex. Questions? Contact Scott Strickler at scotthstrickler@gmail.com. Reaching Out, Celebrating and Living the Love of Christ in God s World.
