1 11:15 a.m. Welcome to Epworth! Welcome to Epworth! Our sermon series on It s Complicated: Relationships in Today s World continues this morning. So far during this series, we ve looked at relationships with parents and grandparents, marriages and partnerships and today we look at siblings and children. Chances are you ve got family dynamics and joys and challenges to celebrate and contemplate this week. We hope to use the stories of Jesus to look at just how we are to relate to these people we literally grow up with and nurture along the way. As our denomination begins its Special General Conference on A Way Forward this Saturday, we also will spend some time in prayer preparing for that event. Thanks for joining us this morning! You are part of our family! But it s complicated. The simple lessons we were taught as children aren t quite adequate for navigating healthy relationships with family and friends in the 21 st Century. From social media to modern families, even if you think you ve got it figured out, healthy relationships can be challenging. Feb Friends and Co-workers Great Decisions Monday 2/18 Class The Great Decisions class that meets Monday mornings will not meet on 2/18 because it is President s Day. 4 Trustees Reminder The Trustees would like to remind everyone that food and beverages (except for closed water bottles) are not allowed in the Sanctuary. In addition to preventing stains on upholstery and floors, there is also a safety concern. Miracles Happen Every Day We toss around the word miracle in countless expressions these days, but do we really expect miracles, do we actually believe they can happen? And how do we even know? The Pastors are planning a short sermon series for summer on modern, everyday miracles. If you have experienced a miracle no matter how grand or how small and would like to share this, please compose a short narrative about the experience, the miracle, the details. Either this to Deb Hunt at dhunt@eumcrb.org or drop it by the church office, to the attention of Deb Hunt by no later than April 1. We would love your submissions, even though we can t guarantee they will be used as illustrations in our sermons. All the miracles shared will go into the research for our sermon writing and planning. Please include your contact information in case someone needs to contact you. Chair Yoga If you missed signing up for Chair Yoga at the Education/Volunteer Fair last Sunday, it is not too late! Classes will start on Tuesday, February 5 from 10 11:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Classes are $5 for each class. Wear something comfortable and join the fun! Great Decisions Class Beginning Wednesday, February 20, from 6 7:30 p.m. in Scott s Chapel, we shall meet for 8 weeks to DISCUSS the crucial foreign affairs decisions facing the U.S. this year. Topics include: Global Migration, Cyber Conflict, Middle East, Nuclear Negotiations, Nationalism in Europe, Trade with China, U.S. & Mexico and the State of Diplomacy. Experts outline the issues via video. A text book with about 6 pages per topic is available ($32) to help form our DISCUSSION. Sign up is at the WINGS table. For further info, see Bob Paulen ( ). Southern Delaware Chorale Concert The Southern Delaware Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Colin Armstrong, will present a concert of traditional spirituals and gospel music in celebration of Black History Month, titled A Choral Patchwork. The Chorale will be joined by Cantabile Women s Chorus, Sussex Tech High School Bella Voce and VOCE men s quartet. It all takes place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Epworth United Methodist church. A d mi s si o n i s $ P l e a se g o t o southerndelawarechorale.org, or purchase tickets at the door on the day of the concert. Like to Sew? We are making reusable grocery bags for the Food Pantry, Good Sam and Food Rescue to eliminate the use of plastic grocery bags. We are looking for help in sewing a very simply constructed bag with strap handles. The bags were designed by Kelly Klein, Gail Gingrich s daughter. We can sew as individuals or get together for a day of sewing and socializing. If you are interested, please contact Gail Gingrich at gvgingrich@gmail.com or There will be a sample bag at the WINGS table today. First performed in 1634 in response to the Black Plague, the play has been presented once every 10 years since. Out tour will take us through medieval towns in Germany, the breathtaking Alps in Switzerland, the Burgundy wine region of France and ultimately to Paris, the City of Lights. The date is September and the price of $4,399 includes airfare, hotel, most meals, play tickets, professional guide and deluxe motor coach. For a complete brochure, please contact Bob Paulen at or bobpaulen@yahoo.com. UMW Reading Program Happy 2019!! With the beginning of the new year, it is time to start thinking about the 2019 UMW s Reading Program. I have listened to three books so far. All of them are excellent and I highly recommend them. They are all available through the Delaware Library system. Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nurturing Community, is a powerful book. It is a letter to a friend giving her suggestions on raising a strong, independent woman. There is a copy on the UMW bookshelf for your use. The Feathered Bone: A Novel, by Julie Cantrell, Social Action, is a well written novel. It deals with many difficult and timely issues such as child abduction, domestic abuse, suicide and faith in the midst of adversity. The setting is New Orleans during the hurricane Katrina time period. Do All Lives Matter? The Issues We Can No Longer Ignore and the Solutions We All Long For, by Wayne Gordon and John M. Perkins, Social Action, challenges each of us to examine our reaction to the Black Lives Matter movement. The 2019 catalog has been downloaded and put on the bookshelf and available online. Questions, call Wendy Herman at Inviting All, Finding Your Place, Connecting to God, Demonstrating Care
