From weddings to Doughnut Sunday, we d love to highlight the vibrancy, faith, and beauty of our parish in the bulletin and other print publications, on the website, and through our various social media outlets. Pastoral Care Capital City Grief Coalition - Thursday, July 20, 5:30-7pm All those who have suffered the loss of a loved one are invited to the Capital City Grief Coalition this Thursday in Steiner Hall. Nativity is hosting the group, which meets at various sites in St. Paul on Thursdays, during the months of June and July. The evening begins with a 30-minute presentation followed by small group discussion. There are a variety of presentations planned which include Brenda Demotte on July 27, Moving From Stress to Balance and Resilience. Newcomers are welcome, and anyone is free to come for the presentation only. For more information about the Coalition, please contact the coordinator, Lois Knutson, at (651) Project Home New Format Happy Summer! Once again Nativity parishioners have an opportunity to serve the homeless at St. Mark s for Project Home. This year, Nativity will not have a specific week to cover Project Home. Instead, we will have access to the whole month of August. Along with St. Mark s parishioners, we will have more flexibility in choosing a date that works to volunteer. Evening Volunteer Hosts are needed at St. Mark s from 5:30-8:30pm and Overnight from 8pm-7am. To sign up for a shift, visit goo.gl/kpy1z8. Virtus Training There is a new requirement for Project Home adult volunteers to have Virtus training (adults only; youth do not need to meet this requirement). Training is available on various dates and in various locations. Visit parish.nativity-mn.org/events/ virtus-training-2 for more information or contact Barb Proeschel at (651) or proeschel@comcast.net. Weddings Marriage Banns Please keep the following couple in your prayers: Friday, July 28 Catalina Nietz & Mitch Rosengren Wedding Planning To be married at Nativity, the bride, groom, or one of their parents must be an active, registered parishioner for at least six months prior to scheduling a wedding. Contact Leah for more information at ldriscoll@nativity-mn.org. Please note that Nativity will not be celebrating weddings in the upper church from June 29, 2018 through September 1, 2018 due to anticipated church maintenance and refurbishing. Respect Life Summer Book Discussion - July 24 The Respect Life Committee invites you to join us in reading and discussing the book Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong by Ryan Bomberger, the Founder of the Radiance Foundation, on Monday, July 24 at 7pm at Karen McCann's home. Not Equal is a powerful look at equality and justice from the perspective of someone who personally escaped the social injustice of abortion. Ryan is both an adoptee and adoptive father and is living proof that triumph can rise from tragedy. If you would like to join us in reading Ryan's first book, or purchase a copy for $16.25, please contact Karen McCann at karmccann@comcast.net or (612) Newcomers are always welcome, and dessert will be served. Young Adults Urban Catholic Lord s Day - Sunday, July 23, 4-7pm Fr. Byron Hagan returns to offer part five of the five-part Field Guide for Millennial Catholics, True Love and Real Sex: Accept No Substitutes. All young adults ages are invited for confessions beginning at 4pm, the presentation at 4:30pm, mass with the parish at 5pm, and a social hour off campus immediately following. Join us for as much as you re able! Apologetics Video Study - Monday, July 17, 7:30pm Our weekly video study of Dr. Ted Sri s Who Am I to Judge? continues this Monday evening, led by summer seminarian Joe Connelly. Fifteen years ago my husband John and I were looking for a parish in St. Paul to join. As it turns out, we didn t have to search very far. We heard great things about Nativity from friends and neighbors and decided this was the place for us. In retrospect, joining Nativity was one of the best decisions we made as a young couple. What began as just a place to go to church has become so much more. Our children have had a wonderful education at Nativity School, we have made lifelong friends, and the community has come to feel like home. This August I ll begin a job share with Leah Driscoll in the Parish Office. I m looking forward to assisting those in the community with their office needs and putting names to familiar faces. As for my background, I grew up in the Como Park area very close to the Minnesota State Fair and I am an avid Fair-lover to this day. I met my husband, John, at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in Spanish class. From there I attended the University of Wisconsin Madison, double majoring in Sociology and Social Welfare, and received a Specialist in Gerontology Certificate. My husband John and I have 2 children: Claire, who will be a freshman at Visitation in the fall; and Nathan, who will be in 6th grade at Nativity School. In my free time I enjoy reading, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering at Nativity School in various ways, most notably chairing the Nativity County Fair in See you in the Parish Office! A second collection will be taken for the missions. In the early 1900 s, the Russian Far East boasted of a thriving Roman Catholic population. Many Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, and other groups inhabited the area and had built schools, hospitals, and beautiful churches. After the revolution of 1917, Russia became an emblem of the Communist era, a land without churches and without God. Under Stalin, all Catholic churches were confiscated and Dioceses closed. Most churches were desecrated or destroyed. Catholics were murdered by the hundreds of thousands and their bodies dumped into mass graves. Our two American priests, Fr. Myron Effing, CJD, and Fr. Daniel Maurer, CJD, arrived in Vladivostok in 1992 to help reestablish the Church in this region and provide charitable assistance to its many poor residents. Now that the foundations have been laid, additional priests and sisters are joining the work, and parishes are growing and multiplying very slowly, but surely. For the latest news on activities of the mission and the Catholic Church in Russia, please visit Grandparents Grandparents Apostolate Speaker Event - July 26 Come celebrate the Feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus, with Nativity of Our Lord's Grandparents Apostolate! All grandparents are invited to a time of enrichment, encouragement, prayer, and fellowship. The morning is highlighted by the Rev. Fr. Alvaro Perez, P.E.S. presenting Consoling His Heart! The Spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Wednesday, July 26. Fr. Alvaro is Associate Pastor of the Church of St. Mark. Sign-up beings at 8:45am and the event at 9am in Steiner Hall. Contact Lilee Perera (651) for more information. Refreshments will be served.
