It is a time when the words, "Come, Lord Jesus!" take on new meaning in our families, and we all long for a new beginning. We long to shed the burden of regrets in the past, and to rediscover within ourselves a hope that longs for the future, which is ready to begin anew. So, after last week s focus on the Wonder of Advent, attention turns this week to the peace and serenity of repentance. For if our participation in Advent is to reach its fullness, it must include intentional and ongoing repentance. Please join me for Nativity s Advent penance service this Tuesday, December 18, at 7pm in the main upper church. Experience the blessing of forgiveness and the precious gift of inner peace. May Christ bless you and your family in our Advent journey. FPH Liturgy Reconciliation Service - Tuesday, December 18, 7pm Please join us for our annual parish Advent penance service this Tuesday evening in the church. Eleven priests are scheduled to be available to hear Confessions, so as many people can receive the sacrament as swiftly as possible. Come, Lord Jesus! 4 Respect Life Book Discussion and Potluck - January 28 Join us in reading Transfigured, Patricia Sandoval's escape from drugs, homelessness, and the back doors of Planned Parenthood by Christine Watkins and Patricia Sandoval. It is the riveting life story of a young girl who felt abandoned by her parents, and after three abortions as well as work at an abortion clinic, became a methamphetamine addict living on the streets until a miracle occurred. We invite everyone to read this important story and plan to discuss it at a potluck on Monday, January 28, from 6-8:30pm in Steiner Hall. Contact Karen McCann at (612) or karmccann@comcast.net to purchase a copy for $15 and enjoy some good reading for over the holidays. "I could not put this book down and give it an enthusiastic recommendation! This generation, so badly wounded by the sexual revolution, needs to read Patricia Sandoval's story of triumph. Patricia is truly a light for the world, and her story will leave you speechless." - Astrid Bennett Gutierrez, EWTN Host and Executive Director of The VIDA Initiative. Men s Club Christmas Tree Lot The annual Tree Lot (pictured on the front cover) is winding down, as we have already sold more than 1,300 trees! We may have a few left, as well as a small selection of wreaths. Stop by if you see the lights on! We re located one block west of Fairview between Wellesley and Stanford. Contact Tree Lot Chairman Joel Metz at joelmetzvw@gmail.com with any questions. Hours of operation: Monday-Thursday: 5:30-8pm Friday: 3:30-8pm Saturday: 9am-8pm Sunday: 9am-7pm Wreath Sale If we missed you during delivery of the wreaths on November 17, and/or you have not yet paid for your order, please do so as soon as possible. The event is free and food and beverage are provided. If you don't have a partner, stop by and we'll try and find you one. Call Stephen at (651) with questions. NCCW Christmas Giving Tree - Ending Thursday, December 20 Please remember to return you unwrapped item along with the gift tag to the Christmas Giving Tree by this Thursday. Thank you for your generosity! The Christmas Giving Tree is sponsored by NCCW and is located in the back of church. Take an ornament, purchase the item listed, and return the unwrapped item along with the ornament to the tree. Small additions to your gift like socks and underwear or other basic needs are always appreciated. The Giving Tree supports participants of Catholic Charities programs for children, home stability and homeless teens, and seniors and the disabled. A food collection box will also be under the tree for non-perishable food donations to Keystone Community Service s Food Shelf. Please contact Mary-Helen Mische at (651) if you have questions or would like to help. Adoration New Sign-In Format The sign-in table will soon take on a new look! A simpler, cleaner sign-in sheet in a three-ring binder will replace our current printed schedule grid. Simply sign your initials in the box next to your name when you arrive. Or, for smartphone users, you can sign in right from your phone! Just visit (or scan the code at right), click Adorer Sign-in, then choose your name from the list. You can also submit prayer intentions or sign in as a visitor. Christmas Hours The Blessed Sacrament will be reposed from 8am on Monday, December 24 through noon on Tuesday, December 25. The chapel will still be open for those who d like to pray. Hours Needed The following hours have no adorers scheduled and represent our greatest need for new weekly commitments: Monday at 1pm; Wednesday at 1pm, 3pm, and 9pm; Thursday at 5:30pm; Friday at 3pm (new hour of need); and Saturday at 6pm and 9pm (new hour of need). Visit for more information, or head directly to nativity to sign up online to commit to a new weekly hour. If you would like to speak to someone about becoming a regular weekly adorer or dedicated substitute, please contact Jim at mcquillanj@rjffs.com or (763) Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

Concerts Exaltate: Tidings of Joy - Saturday, December 15, 7:30pm You re invited to Tidings of Joy this Saturday in the church as Exultate returns to Nativity to celebrate the joy of the Christmas season with carols old and newly written for choir and orchestra. Tickets are available at the door or at exultate.org. Rose Ensemble - Friday, December 21, 8pm The Rose Ensemble returns to Nativity of Our Lord this Friday evening for A Tudor Christmas. Centered on the wealth of music associated with such legendary royalty as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Mary Queen of Scots, voices and instruments resound in this joyful program for cathedral, court, and countryside. Works by Englishmen William Byrd and Thomas Tallis are featured alongside Scottish masters Robert Carver and Robert Johnson, as well as "Tudor tutor," Philip van Wilder. Compositions by Henry VIII himself are also showcased, and the program is rounded out by carols and dances especially loved by Henry's daughters and wives. Tickets are available at the door or at Digital Media Newsletter Have you signed up for Nativity News yet? Nativity of Our Lord s weekly newsletter highlights events of the upcoming weekend and connects parishioners to helpful resources on the web. Visit to sign up. Employment Nativity School Maintenance Nativity School is looking to hire for a part-time evening position (5:30 9:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and 5 9pm on Fridays) on the Nativity School Maintenance team during the school year. The ideal person for this job would be interested in maintenance work, but would not need to have prior experience, as we will provide all of the necessary training. Primary duties would be helping with the cleaning of the school hallways using the auto-scrubbing machine and buffing floors using the floor burnishers. If you are interested in applying or have questions, please contact Steve Boatman, Nativity Facility Director, at sboatman@nativity-mn.org or (651) Stewardship Year-End Giving The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 can significantly impact a taxpayer s status and method of preparing to file taxes. Here are a few ways to take advantage of its provisions to potentially lower your tax bill through charitable giving: Making charitable gifts to Nativity Church or School from your IRA as a Qualified Charitable Distribution If you are 70.5 years old and have a traditional IRA, you are likely required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) each year, and that distribution is fully taxable. However, did you know that you can direct your RMD from your IRA to the charities of your choice and pay zero tax on the distribution? If you are taking funds from your IRA and also making charitable donations in the same year, making Qualified Charitable Distributions to a favorite charity is taxfree. Bunching contributions into a Donor Advised Fund for later gifting If you no longer itemize deductions, you may not be able to use your charitable deductions to lower your taxes. Many donors are bundling a few years worth of their charitable giving into a Donor Advised Fund (DAF). The full tax deduction is available for the entire amount placed in a DAF in a single year. The donor can then make annual distributions to charities over many years on their own schedule from the DAF. This allows for a large amount to be itemized in a single year while providing many years of future charitable distributions. An added benefit is that the fund balance grows tax-free each year, so you have even more to give to Nativity Church, Nativity School, or other charities of your choosing. Finally, always talk to your advisor for advice on the tax benefits of your personal charitable giving. And please remember Nativity Church and School in your year-end giving. If you plan to make a gift through your broker, please contact Laura Barr, Nativity s business administrator, for directions or assistance at lbarr@nativity-mn.org. Or, consider making a gift or setting up a periodic electronic fund transfer on Nativity s website at Thank you for your generosity to Nativity of Our Lord.
