1 February 22, 2015 First Sunday of Lent Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Sat 8 am & 5 pm Sunday 9 am & 11 am website: parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN A Strong Family United in Christ Every year on the first Sunday of Lent we hear about Jesus going into the desert. This year we have the short version, from the Gospel of Mark, which reads simply, The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. During these weeks of Lent, which lead to our reliving of Christ s passion, death and resurrection, abundant fruit can be produced in our souls if we stay close to our Lord. It is a season of opportunity for us a time that the Church sets aside for a special effort toward penance and conversion. Before working any miracles, before speaking any parables, before gathering any disciples, our Lord goes to the desert. He teaches us that the desert is a prerequisite in the spiritual life. It is necessary for us if we are to follow our Lord and the key is to always follow Him wherever He leads. Like Jesus, we need to wrestle with temptation and difficulties in order to find God s will and our fulfillment. Saints or Sinners In the desert we discover that we all bear within us the potential to become either saints or sinners. No one s fate is predetermined. Even the angels had to make a free choice for good or evil, and the love of the angels that chose good made them faithful instruments of God s plan. The self-centeredness of the fallen angels made them into wild beasts, looking for someone to devour. Our most secret and intimate choices are part of this same spiritual struggle between good and evil they have consequences for that battle. Like Christ, we are tempted. Those moments of temptation are moments of choice Continued on Page 2 Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. We want to take the next few weeks to introduce you to the members and work of St Mark s Pastoral Parish Council (PPC). My wife Dunia and I have been parishioners at St Mark s for about seven years (with a long break between the first years and our current four years). I have been the Chair of the PPC for the past two years and it has been a time of learning and growth for me. What does the PPC do? As the name suggests, it is first intended to be a pastoral body. Though PPC should consist of a cross section of the parish membership, it is distinct from being asked to represent a constituency. It is rather an invitation, alongside our pastor and with his guidance, to discern how to respond to the Gospel s call to holiness and service as a parish family united in Him. In relation to the pastor, our role is to advise and challenge, and most importantly, to support with him an emerging vision as a parish family. Continued on Page 3 All God s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.

2 Page 2 February 22, 2015 Spiritually Speaking - continued from page 1 Today s Readings: (LC #99) Gen 9: 8-15; 1 Pet 3: 18- for us, as they were for Christ. And the stronger the temptation, the stronger the decision must be. Repeated decisions for the good, fueled by our practice of self denial, make a habit of good. Many good habits build a good character, which, when open to God s grace, is holiness. I Will Remain Our Lord does more than simply enter the desert he remains. He teaches us to stay for the battle, rather than to follow our inclination to find an easier path. Our remaining is possible only when we enter the desert with Jesus. He has the answer to the temptations that crowd around us. And so we are able to stay by God s grace. We are able to choose to remain and be sifted (Lk 22: 31), so as to attain greater union with God. It is human nature to seek consolation instead to want to shift our focus quickly to the resurrection. We can stay in the desert willingly, or we can enter Lent already looking for our escape. This Lent, let s allow ourselves to be driven more deeply into the desert, not hovering near the perimeter where there is an easy getaway. We must remember that even in the darkest wilderness, the angels are ministering to us, as they did for Jesus. We are never alone. Our 40 Days In Spanish, the season of Lent is called Cuaresma, which comes from the word for forty cuarenta. It is the season of the 40 days. We enter the desert for 40 days during Lent because Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness. But there are many Old Testament references to the number 40 as well. As we are reminded by our first reading, Noah on his Ark watched rain fall for 40 days and nights. Moses climbed Mt Sinai and spent 40 days there, in order to receive the Ten Commandments. And the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, before entering the Promised Land. The connection? All of these 40 s were the prelude or prerequisite for something new - a new birth (it s interesting that a human pregnancy lasts 40 weeks as well). Noah saw the rebirth of a sinful world that had been cleansed by the waters of the flood. Moses descended the mountain, and the people of the covenant were born. And for the wandering Israelites, there was the start of a new, settled existence in the Promised Land. Jesus 40 days marked a birth as well the birth of His public ministry which culminated in the Pascal Mystery. And so a new Israel was born, liberated from sin and reconciled with God. As we follow Jesus into the desert this Lent, it is with the promise of Easter on the horizon. But let s not be in a hurry to get there! The liturgy helps us to move at God s pace, and to remember that there is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. 22; Mk 1: Psalm: Ps 25: 4-9: Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant. Next Sunday: Gen 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; Ps 116: 10, 15-19; Rom 8: 31b-34; Mk 9: 2-10 Mass Intentions for the Week of February 23 Mon 10:00am Lawrence & Emma Kampa Family Tues 10:00am Elden & Michael Wilkin Wed 10:00am Altar Servers Thurs 10:00am + Matt Vertin Fri 10:00am Special Intention Sat 8:00am Br David Hottinger, PES Lenten Liturgical Notes School Penance Service (Mar 24) 10:45am & 12:45pm Parish Penance Service (Mar 24) 7:00pm Stations of the Cross Compline/Night Prayer Fridays 1:30pm & 7:30pm Sundays at 8:30pm in the Adoration Chapel * See flyer or website for details on our Friday speaker series! 3 Page 3 Zach Zeckser School News - Principally Speaking The more time I spend at St Mark's the more I love it! It has become like a second home for me - not only because the staff and I spend so much time there, but because we really are like a family united in Christ. I have even heard some parents say that the family atmosphere at the school creates an experience that is like home school away from home! With our upcoming adventure of becoming a Catholic IDEALS school, St Mark s will only become more dynamic, more faithful and more of a distinguished community of growth and learning! Already our graduates are being called "the most well-rounded students" by our partner Catholic high schools, but this renewed emphasis will provide the interpersonal and interpersonal skills our students need for college and career readiness (the 21st century skills that high schools and universities are constantly talking about). The future looks bright! Highland LifeCare Baby Items Needed Highland LifeCare Center helps women with babies ages newborn through two years old, with diapers, clothes and anything baby-related. If you have used baby clothes, sizes premie through 3T, or equipment in good condition, this would greatly help the women who come to us. Donations can be brought to our center located at 1999 Ford Parkway (hours are Mon-Sat, 9am-3pm), or call to make other arrangements. Thank-you! Grand Olde St Mark s Days May 15 & 16 Plan on attending our 16th annual parish festival! Food, friends, rides, music, games and talented Markers - all too much fun to miss! March 7 The St Mark s 125th Anniversary Committee is sponsoring a sacred art event and all are invited! The connection between faith and art is ever ancient, yet ever new. A professional artist will bring in all the supplies we need and will instruct us as we paint a beautiful piece of art on canvas, based on the art found in our Church. The date for our Creations with Christ - a Parish Painting Party is Saturday, March 7th from 2:30-4:30pm. Cost is $30. Register online or call the Parish Center. Questions? Call Samantha at Come join us! First Sunday in Lent Strong Family Story - continued from page 1 Our central focus over the past two years has been to help promote greater unity, stability and vitality in and between the various ministries in our parish. For example, we are experiencing a more united spirit between the Church and it s ministry in our excellent school. The Bible Study ministry has helped us become more deeply grounded in God s Word. We have built a bridge between Project Home and Perpetual Adoration. And we are working to bring together the vital Prolife ministries with all ministries that support the social teachings of the Church as the Human Dignity Ministries. The various members of the PPC have been playing an active role in these initiatives, along with so many parishioners. Over the coming four weeks, the other PPC members will be briefly introducing themselves and their roles. Please feel free to talk with any of us about your concerns, but more importantly, about how we are all being called to grow and serve God s mission for us as a parish. ~ Paul Ruff Lenten Morning of Reflection March 7 God s Eternal Love That the love with which you have loved Me may be in them.
