2 Page Two Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 MELT DOWN Dalí s The Persistence of Memory The world of surrealism was a kind of twilight zone of unexpected and unrelated objects and themes. Surrealists like Dalí could use realistic objects in the most detailed way. Others opted for abstraction without logic or normal standards. In surrealism, the prime directive was let imagination rule. Teach us to number our days aright... Psalm 90 pleads. The Book of Ecclesiastes issues a reality alert about the final emptiness of the way we spend time... how we waste life! Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! The parable of the rich fool (Luke ) warns us we have no mastery over time, possessions or life. In search of a visual work of art that builds on such melancholy revelations, I found Salvador Dalí s The Persistence of Memory irresistible. Salvador Dalí ( ) is impossible to describe in a few adjectives or a simple sentence. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, an eccentric in the extreme sense, a revolutionary and reactionary in the art world, Salvador Dalí was also an enigmatic, but magnificent, revert to Catholicism. Dalí is one of the most important figures in an avant garde artistic movement called surrealism. When he was expelled from the inner circle of surrealists for being apolitical during the rise of fascism, he protested: I myself am surrealism! And he believed it! Surrealism aimed to transcend reality as viewed by the naked eye, and show instead images of the subconscious. Highly influenced by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, surrealism was a dreamscape that substituted traditional form and perspective for a new world. Dalí s The Persistence of Memory (1931) and what might be considered its sequel, The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1954) reflect the artist s fascination with science. The two works represent stages or an evolution of Dalí s world view. In the earlier work, a Freudian play of images and arguably Einstein s Theory of Relativity may be the keys to unlock its meaning. Are the soft watches symbols of the relativity of time and space? Is the ant infested watch inevitable decay and death? Is this, as some suggest, a surrealist meditation on the collapse of our notions of a fixed cosmic order? Dalí himself denied that the melting watches were inspired by the Theory of Relativity. He said what inspired the watches was Camembert cheese melting in the sun! The barren landscape, cliffs and sea and monstrous creature are the things that inhabit our dreams - - places that are everywhere and nowhere, forms fading in and out. The Persistence of Memory has often been seen as a rejection that time is rigid and deterministic. Since Dalí was a long way from his return to Catholicism no one finds a religious symbolism in this 1931 work. However, time relates to Biblical themes and decay of the finite as well. Dalí s life and career experiences from 1931 to 1954 included marriage, being a war refugee, witnessing the Atomic Age, and return to Catholicism. Professionally, in 1941, he shocked the artistic community with his last scandal - - a declaration that he would only engage in classical painting. His spiritual journey led him to the poetry and drawings of St. John of the Cross. By 1949, he was a practicing Catholic and even had a private audience with Pope Pius XII! He painted impressive religious subjects including The Crucifixion of St. John of the Cross and The Sacrament of the Last Supper.

3 Page Three Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 What is perhaps most amazing about a very surprising artist is the way Dalí combined science with religious belief. He firmly asserted that: ST. ISAAC JOGUES PARISH RAFFLE not a single philosophic, moral, aesthetic or biological discovery allows the denial of God. Dalí was an odd sort of mystic and visionary. He advanced the atomic nature of the universe and a theory of nuclear mysticism. This came from a flamboyant and really weird celebrity who made silly commercials and gave gothic interviews! His whole perspective changed when he adopted Dr. Werner Heisenberg s Uncertainty Principle and issued his own version of the anti-matter manifesto. His then and now comparison is also a rationale for painting, The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory: Then: Now: I wanted to create the iconography of the interior world and the world of the marvelous, of my father Freud. Today the exterior world and that of Physics has transcended the one of Psychology. (This advance is from) my father, Dr. Heisenberg. If one studies the two paintings together, the second painting shows fragmentation and disintegration in small rectangular forms. It is Dalí s recognition and homage to the superiority of the new science. Like many a genius, Dalí was a paradox. He loved to shock with assertions that he was both Catholic and agnostic, an anarchist and monarchist. I do not question his sincerity as a Catholic or an artist the way some of his peers have. It is reported that, in 1947, he was exorcised by a pious Italian friar. It seems to have been successful. Even so, I have never heard even a rumor of his cause being introduced. Nor is this article a proposal to airbrush his life and Halo Dalí. -Fr. 4 Page Four Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 The Religious Education Program for Grades 1 through Confirmation Year II begins on Monday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m.! RE Kindergarten Classes begin on September 8 th. Letters with class assignments will be mailed out early this week. If you have not had a chance to register, please call the RE Office, 847/ , to set up a time to come in and fill out registration forms. Kindergarten classes meet on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1 Confirmation Year II meet on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to involve their children each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. If families have children with special needs or who have not received their sacraments, we would be happy to meet with you and discuss options. There is tuition along with applicable book and sacrament fees. Families with financial concerns are encouraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. 5 Page Five Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? Allah/God When Muslims say Allah and Christians say God, are they referring to the same God? The answer is yes and no. But let us look more closely. Regarding the One whom Muslims and Christians worship, the answer is yes. Allah is just the Arabic word for God. It is also the word Arabic-speaking Christians use in their prayers and at Mass. For both Muslims and Christians Allah/God is the one and only God. Regarding their understanding of God both Christians and Muslims would answer no. Consequently, Christianity and Islam are two separate religions. Christians believe God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Three persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendor, yet one Lord, one God (Preface of the Mass for the Trinity). When Muslims say Allah in their prayers, they mean the One and Only God who is neither two nor three. For Muslims, Allah is indivisible and un-partnerable. So again, when Christians pray and say God, and their Muslim neighbors say Allah, are both referring to the same God? The answer is yes and no. Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Archdiocese of Chicago SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE TODAY The SIJ Teen Group asks your help for the children of our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, and some of the children of our own parish during the annual School Supply Drive which is being held in the Holy Family Room TODAY. MISSION APPEAL NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend, August 10-11, St. Isaac Jogues Parish will welcome Fr. Christsanth Mugasha, A.J., who will make the mission appeal on behalf of the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary, a missionary African congregation. Sister Jacinta writes, The sisters work in Tanzania-Zanzibar, Kenya, Uganda, and Sudan. The Evangelizing Sisters of Mary work in arid desert, in war areas and in most remote places. We work directly with single parents, slum dwellers, desperate drop-out youth, street children, refugees, and parents and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Your support will enable the sisters to teach skills and provide materials in order for them to be self-sufficient. Our generosity in the second collection and our prayers will connect us in a special way to the missionary work of the Church and will be blessings that the Evangelizing Sisters of Mary will greatly appreciate. 7 Page Seven Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 4, 2013 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, there was the usual buzz of speculation about likely successors. Cardinal Agajanian, Patriarch of the Armenians, was highly thought of as a likely choice. This took many Catholics by surprise, since he had never celebrated the same liturgy as Pope Pius, but followed ancient Armenian customs according to the Eastern Church, which veils the Eucharisic liturgy from sight by a series of curtains, and in which the priest kneels while the people stand for Communion. In the years that followed, the Second Vatican Council would affirm the dignity and independence of the Eastern Churches, in complete union with Rome, yet different in patterns of life and worship. We have the same faith, the same sacraments, and the same pope. Yet everywhere in the world our separate Churches are combined into families held together by the ministry of bishops. All of this serves as warning: If you ever say, But we ve always done it this way, you are on very thin ice indeed!
