We are people of mixed motivations, and God wants our goodness to be sincere. In the intention of the heart, God is pleased, wanting our lives to be lived in love. The smallest help to another, done from love, is worth more than the biggest done to get approval; that s what Jesus meant when he praised the poor woman who gave away a small amount all she had; and what it means is that God never asks more than we can give. And we can give everything away, even our bodies in death, but if we have no love, it means nothing at all. And what could look less than the piece of bread at Mass? But this is God giving all of himself to us. We ask for the gift of sincerity. St Mary s Parish, Bennekerry Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Everyone Needs Someone People need people and friends need friends And we all need love for a full life depends Not on vast riches or great acclaim, Not on success or on worldy fame, But just in knowing that someone cares And holds us close in their thoughts and prayers- For only the knowledge that we're understood Makes everyday living feel wonderfully good, And we rob ourselves of life's greatest need When we "lock up our hearts" and fail to heed The outstretched hand reaching to find A kindred spirit whose heart and mind Are lonely and longing to somehow share Our joys and sorrows and to make us aware That life's completeness and richness depends On the things we share with our loved ones and friends. by Helen Steiner Rice 16 th February 2014

6 CALENDAR Monday 17 th :-Servite Founders. In the early thirteenth century 7 young merchants of Florence decided to help one another live more perfect Christian lives. As the result of a vision they became known as the 'Servants of Mary' and followed the Rule of St Augustine. St Fintan was born in Leinster. He received his religious formation in Terryglass, Co. Tipperary under Abbot Colum and was deeply influenced by his penitential practices and the severity of the Rule. Fintan made his own foundation in Clonenagh, Co. Laois. He died in 603 Friday 21 st :St Damian, , gave up teaching to become a hermit. Later he was Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. He was an outstanding reformer of Church life and discipline. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK -Helping Others The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. Ralph Waldo Emerson The Lion and the Mouse Once when a Lion was asleep a little Mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaws to swallow him. "Pardon, O King," cried the little Mouse: "forgive me this time, I shall never forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a turn some of these days?" The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go. Some time after the Lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him on. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said the little Mouse. The Good Shepherd The Good Shepherd always walks in front Gently leading the way, Never behind driving or pushing, But lovingly guiding each day; And when a sheep wanders away From the security of this place, The Shepherd corrects the wayward one In love, mercy, and grace. He protects from harm and fear All that follow His lead, His rod and staff guard and comfort, And His hand meets every need; He provides beautiful green pastures - Rest for the weary and weak, Revival, strength and vigor... Peace and joy to reap. He sets a table in the wilderness With manna from on high, And leads beside the still waters That refresh and satisfy. Oh, what love and tender care, Such blessings God bestows Upon the sheep that closely follow The way The Shepherd goes Moral of Aesops Fable: Little friends may prove great friends
