(Acts 2:1-11) Retired Priests Fund Collection 2016 A collection will take place in all parishes in the Diocese on May 28 th / 29 th to assist with the on-going support of our Retired Priests. Priests in the Diocese are paid a set salary from the Priests Collection during the year and any monies leftover goes towards helping our retired priests. Unfortunately the monies leftover at present are insufficient to provide this assistance. Bishop Denis and the priests of the Diocese thank you for your on-going contributions for priest collections.

7 Carlow Historical and Archaeological Society A lecture entitled "The Black Death" by Fin Dwyer, who is a historian, archaeologist & author will take place in the Seven Oaks Hotel on Wednesday 18th May at 8pm.Admission free. All welcome. The Black Death was one the greatest killers in recorded human history. The disease which struck Ireland in the summer of 1348 was preceded by decades of warfare and famine which had already weakened the population. Following the outbreak over one third of the population died in less than a year. Contact Martina or Ann Carlow Federation Irish Countrywomen s Association Commemorative Wall Hanging The Carlow Federation ICA have produced an informative and lasting legacy in the form of a 6x3ft wall hanging reflecting on the last 100 years since the 1916 Rising which is now on display to the public in Carlow College (St. Patrick s College), College Street, Carlow Town. The piece incorporated quilting, embroidery and various stitching styles. Members of the twelve guilds of the Carlow Federation were involved in the making of the commemorative piece. Free Admission. 8 Carlow Castle 3D Model and Illustration display Both the 3D model and illustration are based on the time period of the late 14th century when Carlow was the administrative Capital of Ireland. The 3D printed model of the castle was made by Bryan Leech, Lecturer in Industrial Design and Design Students at IT Carlow. The illustration of the Castle & surrounding areas was undertaken by Uto Hogerzeil, historical reconstruction artist. 9 Askea Community Games Area Athletics Finals to take place on Monday 23rd May. Registration at 6.30pm. Area Athletics Training continues on Wednesday nights in St Laurence O'Tooles Athletic Club at 6pm. All children in the Askea Area from U6-U16 welcome. We will also have a busy summer schedule with camps and other activities in Hacketstown, Askea Boys school, Bagenelstown, Tullow and St. Fiaccs school Graiguecullen. There are many varied activities for teenagers, and we would be happy to give more information on these. We are looking for volunteers for our camps, if you are aged 16 and over and would like to participate and learn new skills, applications are available at reception at Montgomery House. The concert raised in excess of 8,000 and a donation of 5,000 will be made to the friends of Saint Brigid s Hospice in the coming days with the remainder of the monies to be donated towards adult and children cancer research. PAN CELTIC REVIEW MEETING: An open meeting to review the recent Pan Celtic International Festival will take place on Thursday, 19th May at 7.30pm in Carlow College Information Centre, Tullow Street (beside Dealz). The meeting will be an opportunity to review this year s event as well as building on its success for Pan Celtic 2017 which will take place from 18th -23rd April. CALENDAR Monday 16th:- St Brendan was a Kerry man who was born in 486. He studied at Clonard under Finnian. His name is connected with many places in Kerry such as Ardfert and Mount Brandon. He united Scotland and reached the Hebrides and possibly beyond. He founded a monastery in Clonfert in 568 and died there in 578. Wednesday 18th:-St John 1 was the first bishop of Rome to visit Constantinople. He was involved in Arian controversies and imprisoned at Ravenna, where he died in 526. Friday 20th:-St Bernadine was born in Siena in He became a Franciscan travelled through Italy, preaching with great success. He promoted devotion to the Holy Name and to St Joseph. He died in Saturday y 21s:-t Ss Christopher Magallánes and Companions. These 25 priests and laymen were executed in 1927 in Mexico.
