In today s Gospel, we hear Jesus say I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. By calling himself the Way, Jesus is stating that the way to the Father was through him. It is also interesting that the early Church community described themselves as followers of the Way (see, for example, Acts 9:2). The First Reading today, which is taken from the first section of the Acts of the Apostles outlines one of the more fundamental concerns which faced the early followers of the Way some of the widows from the Greek speaking part of the community were not being fed. The disciples did not want to neglect the work of God, but they also saw the importance of acts of charity, and seven men full of the faith and the Holy Spirit were appointed to look after the welfare of the more vulnerable members of the community. These seven, the first deacons, not only served in acts of charity, but also began to serve the Word, with Stephen explaining the Scriptures before facing his martyrdom, and Philip spreading the gospel to Samaria and converting the Ethiopian who was struggling to understand a passage from Isaiah. We who are following the same Way 2,000 years later, can take comfort that the earliest followers of Christ, who placed their trust in the Holy Spirit, were able to achieve so much while building the Way on the solid foundations of justice and charity. 4 EXTRACTS FROM BENNEKERRY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Fair Trade Art Competition Well done to Stephen Ellis in Junior Infants who was selected as a prize-winner. Music Generation Pupils in 3 rd to 6 th Classes are continuing to make huge progress in music literacy, choral singing and instrumental music as a result of our participation in this programme. 4 th and 5 th Classes attended Music Generation Workshops in the Seven Oaks Hotel with The Gregory Walkers Instrumental Group. The children were very enthusiastic about their performance with professional musicians. There is a recital planned for next term. School Visits 4 th Class visited The Visual to view the work of artist Patrick Scott and participate in a workshop inspired by the artist s work entitled Kites. They also visited the Carlow County Museum on the same day. As part of a follow-up lesson on letter writing, the children wrote lovely letters of thanks to the staff in the Visual and the Museum to show their appreciation. 6 th Class enjoyed a trip to St. Leo s College to see the musical Sister Act. The fire brigade arrived to the school a few weeks ago. Thankfully we had no emergency - just a friendly visit to the Junior Infant Classrooms from members of the local fire service and Sergeant Peter McConann! The visitors spoke to the children about safety. The highlight came when the children went to the car park to take turns on the fire engine. Environmental Science Workshop Environmentalist Paul Finch visited the school recently to demonstrate the use of pedal power as a source of electricity. He used old bits of bicycles, washing machines, motors, pumps, wheels etc. to operate machines without using electricity. He pedalled a specially adapted old chopper bicycle to power a fan, lights, a water pump and a blender. He even made healthy smoothies using the blender attached to the bicycle. Children were very impressed with the demonstration and everyone enjoyed their smoothies! Art Committee The school has applied for an arts grant under the Per Cent for Arts Scheme for new public buildings. The artist s brief has been circulated to artists and we have received a number of submissions to date. Thanks to all involved on this committee, especially Mrs. Patricia Bowe who has put huge effort into the project. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Beyond Today Some people are near sighted; they live only for the present. Other people are farsighted; they live beyond today. CALENDAR Tuesday 20 th :-St Bernadine was born in Siena in He became a Franciscan travelled through Italy, preaching with great success. He promoted devotion to the Holy Name and to St Joseph. He died in Wednesday 21 s:-t Ss Christopher Magallánes and Companions. These 25 priests and laymen were executed in 1927 in Mexico. Thursday 22 nd :-St Rita of Cascia: , was married for 18 years. Her husband an ill-tempered and abusive man, was murdered. Later Rita entered the Augustian Convent in Cascia and spent 40 years in prayer and charity, working for peace in the region. AREA 11/BENNEKERRY /TINRYLAND Bennekerry/Tinryland Athletics training has commenced, Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm-8pm at St Joseph's Soccer pitch in Tinryland, If you are from the Bennekerry/ Tinryland area and are interested in taking part just come along.
