Dr. Sauer was pleased to report that the Alberta Summer games were a huge success thanks to the efficiency and dedication of over 2,500 volunteers and support from our community. With community initiative grants from local organizations such as our Rotary Club and the Community Foundation our city was left with many lasting legacy s. Dr. Sauer thanked our Rotary Club for providing the games with $125,000 to complete the track and soccer complex which is now officially the, Rotary Track & Soccer Complex. As well, the Community Foundation provided a grant for bleachers at the Family Leisure Centre swimming pool, which allows spectators to sit in the pool area during competitions. Another lasting legacy is the beach volleyball courts down in Kin Coulee. With over 10,000 people which include the athletes, coaches, chaperones and parents, converging on Medicine Hat the economic spin off for local businesses was fantastic. Dr. Sauer pointed out that all work leading up to the games, which included building the various facilities, and all work during the games such as catering, merchandise, and accommodations were supplied by local Is it the truth? Dr. Sauer said that although he finished wrapping up the games late Sunday night, he felt invigorated on Monday and was ready to put his energy into the Canada Cup Baseball starting on Wednesday. In closing he once again thanked our Rotary Club for supporting the 2008 Alberta Summer Games. President s Message Acting President Dave Panabaker explained he was filling in for President Wayne Chesley. After acknowledging our guests, birthdays and anniversaries, Dave introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Ken Sauer, Chairman of the 2008 Alberta Summer Games. Minute Matters Mary Lou Hansen explained she requires a head count for the winery tour on September 4 and asked the attendees fill out the form on the tables. She also reminded people of the SUN HAT Competition that will be held at our meeting at Echo Dale Park on 25 August, with prizes for best hats. She reminded people that this was Canada Cup Baseball week, starting on Wednesday with the opening ceremonies at Athletic Park. On a closing note she was happy to announce the Business Leaders Trip to China, which will be leaving Vancouver November Early registration is up to Aug 15. Steve Maser is putting together a binder that will contain national and international initiatives our club is in involved with and he would appreciate any feedback, suggestions or pictures. 3 Jim Soloman was pleased to announce that Team 3 had their Bingo on Aug 7 and they made $499 and Bernie Scott won the pool. Thanks to all for coming out. Bryce Dynes reminded us that the Toyota Never Quits Dragon Boat Festival takes place on August 23 at Elkwater. He invited everyone to come cheer them on. Nadia Deenen announced that Mikiko, our Japanese exchange student, will be arriving in Medicine Hat on August 14 and invited people to come out to the airport and welcome her to Medicine Hat. Dave Panabaker said Team 2 Bingo made $868 and Elvira Smid won the pool. Thanks to all for coming out. $gt-at-arms - Paul Heywood Sgt. Heywood set his sights on Dave Panabaker by asking him a question that if he got it right he would not be fined. The question, What kind of car do you drive.? Never one to miss a beat Dave replied, I don t drive a car, I drive a truck. Semantics Paul retorted, what kind of truck do you drive? GMC replied Dave. Wrong answer. Dave was fined $1. Sgt. Heywood then zeroed in on Bruce Dynes with the same question and Bruce's reply was, GMC truck. He was fined $1 as Toyota sponsors the Dragon Boat Festival. Rod Pillman was fined $2 for enjoying himself in Scotland. Tom Seaman was fined $1 for showing up. Gerard Nugter was fined $5 for having an anniversary. Allan O Byrne was fined $2 for doing the sound check during the meeting, not before and he was fined another $2 enjoying a week of fishing. $ Happy Dollars $ Joan Sauve was happy with the Rotary Dinner she attended at Dieter Brands home. Rod Whitfield was happy for the great holiday he had water skiing in Washington. Bruce Dynes had a happy $10 for staring 3 weeks holiday, his daughter getting married on Saturday and the Dragon Boat Festival being over soon. Dick Bide gave a happy $5 for winning a flight. Al Garden was happy his 11 year old grand daughter competed in the Alberta Summer games and walked away with a bronze in the triathlon. Rod Pillman was happy that he watched his grand daughter compete in Highland dancing in Scotland and win the overall trophy for the games. Dieter Brand was happy his son, an engineer, was able to get a sail boat working that Dieter was unable to get working in the 1960 s. Kirk Wright was happy for his wakeboarding adventures in Saskatchewan, but his body feels the pain. Steve Maser gave a happy $2 now that his bathroom is now tiled. 4 Dinner he hosted. Dave Panabaker gave a happy $5 for attending the Rotary dinner at Dieter Brand s. In Elvira Smid s absence Dave Panabaker offered up a happy $1 from her Bingo pool win.
