What Christians hope for, i.e. a new heaven and a new earth has no scientific basis. Indeed it can t have. At present all that science can ultimately foresee is a frozen waste of nothingness. The heart-warming prospect of blissful eternal life has no basis other than in the word of God (Rev 21:1). In today s Second Reading (1 Pet 3:15-18) Peter exhorts us to be ready always to defend that hope. And we do that basically by showing how God has kept his promises historically and by showing that his promises continue to be fulfilled today. Historically, God promised the seemingly impossible only to fulfil it@ Abraham and Sarah in advanced age beget a son, down-trodden Hebrews gain freedom from their super-power slave- masters, an eagerly awaited messiah comes, but in the most unexpected manner. Killed and seemingly defeated, he rises from death to fulfil his mission. Today, God s promises continue to be fulfilled. God continues to bless us with new life, with freedom from slavery to sin, with the promise and hope of resurrection. Yet, perhaps there is one other way to defend that hope: by allowing it put pep in our step. EXTRACTS FROM BENNEKERRY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Sport We are delighted to have so many outside coaches visiting the school to impart their skills in a wide variety of sports. 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th Classes are doing a series of coaching sessions in Gaelic Football. 6 th Class are doing rugby at the moment. 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th had soccer coaching earlier on in the term. Show Jumping Our show jumping team was placed 4 th in the recent Inter Schools Show Jumping Competition in Kildare. Well done to Sophie Walsh, Matthew Farrell and Avril Kelly who each received a rosette. Swimming 1 st Class and 3 rd Class are doing swimming lessons this term. Daffodil Day We had a tremendous response to the sale of daffodils on Daffodil Day in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. 862 was raised in the school on the day. Sincere thanks for your support for this extremely worthy cause. Thanks also to 5 th Class pupils and their teachers for organising the sale of the daffodils. (I noticed that some of our 5 th Class displayed great sales techniques on the day they would make a fortune selling flowers in Moore Street!) Questionnaire on Uniform The results of the survey showed that 98.5 % of parents are happy with the present uniform. 1.5 % are opposed to having a school uniform. 80% of the respondents are totally satisfied with all items, 18.5 % expressed dissatisfaction with one or more items included on the survey. Overall, the vast majority of parents are very satisfied with our present arrangements regarding uniform. Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the questionnaire.

5 A man, his horse and his dog A man, his horse and his dog were traveling down a road. When they were passing by a gigantic tree, a bolt of lightning struck and they all fell dead on the spot. But the man did not realize that he had already left this world, so he went on walking with his two animals; sometimes the dead take time to understand their new condition The journey was very long, uphill, the sun was strong and they were covered in sweat and very thirsty. They were desperately in need of water. At a bend in the road they spotted a magnificent gateway, all in marble, which led to a square paved with blocks of gold and with a fountain in the centre that spouted forth crystalline water. The traveller went up to the man guarding the gate. Good morning. What is this beautiful place? This is heaven. How good to have reached heaven, we re ever so thirsty. You can come in and drink all you want. My horse and my dog are thirsty too. So sorry, but animals aren t allowed in here. The man was very disappointed because his thirst was great, but he could not drink alone; he thanked the man and went on his way. After traveling a lot, they arrived exhausted at a farm whose entrance was marked with an old doorway that opened onto a tree-lined dirt road. A man was lying down in the shadow of one of the trees, his head covered with a hat, perhaps asleep. Good morning, said the traveller. We are very thirsty me, my horse and my dog. There is a spring over in those stones, said the man, pointing to the spot. Drink as much as you like. The man, the horse and the dog went to the spring and quenched their thirst. Then the traveller went back to thank the man. By the way, what s this place called? Heaven. Heaven? But the guard at the marble gate back there said that was heaven! That s not heaven, that s hell. The traveller was puzzled. You ve got to stop this! All this false information must cause enormous confusion! The man smiled: Not at all. As a matter of fact they do us a great favour. GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS CALENDAR Monday 26 th :-St Philip Neri, was born in Florence but spent most of his life in Rome, where he founded the Congregation of the Oratory to foster good preaching and to promote holiness of priestly life. Tuesday 27 th :-St Augustine of Canterbury was a monk in Rome when sent by Pope Gregory the Great to preach to the English. He set up his see at Canterbury and had much success in converting the South of England. Saturday 31 st :-The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

6 The Eist Cancer Support Centre is open: Tues to Thurs from 9.30am to 4pm. The Centre caters for anyone who has been affected by a cancer diagnosis, their families and carers. The Centre is currently running a drop in relaxation & meditation programme each Tuesday morning at 11am. The next meeting of our bereavement group will take place May 28th at 10.30am at the centre (please phone to confirm attendance) Counselling and Reflexology are by appointment only. ATHLETICS SUMMER CAMP St Laurence O Toole AC are hosting an Athletics Ireland Summer Camp week commencing 14th July to 18th July.
