The team explores and encourages a variety of connections among the ministries of our congregation and other, especially Lutheran, partners beyond our walls, with an emphasis on ministries outside our nation. Our national church, the ELCA, reminds us that our way of doing ministry is called accompaniment, walking alongside. Our lesson today from First Corinthians reminds us that we are all members of the body of Christ, each with special gifts. The unity of the church and the ways we work together reflect the glory of God. Most gloriously, the promises of God are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who announces and brings liberty to all held who experience bondage of any kind. Gather round. Listen up. Glimpse the glory of God. *Gathering The assembly reads responsively. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. 3 God built the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. God calls us to be builders as well. God calls us to build our lives: to restore broken places and continue to grow. God calls us to build our faith: to study the Word and ponder its interpretation. God calls us to build our community: to build bridges of understanding and systems of justice. God calls us to build history by fulfilling the promises of Scripture: to preach the good news of God s love and liberation for all people. *Confession and Forgiveness God calls us, yet we often fail to live in the ways of God. We ourselves are oppressed by sin and far too often have ignored the suffering of the oppressed and the needs of the poor. For this we are sorry. Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. 6 *Prayer of the Day Let us pray together. God, our Father, your son Jesus prayed that his followers might be one. Make all Christians throughout the world one with him as he is one with you, so that in peace and concord we may carry to the world the message of your love and of the freedom available through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Word First Reading A Reading from Isaiah 61:1-4. NRSV, page 603 As the Israelites approached the Promised Land after having escaped from slavery, the Lord commanded his people that every 50 years they were to declare the Year of Jubilee, a time of joy and liberation. Centuries later, the prophet Isaiah uses the image of the Jubilee to describe what God has sent him to say to those returning to the ruined city of Jerusalem after having spent decades in exile. The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 7 Second Reading A Reading from 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a. NRSV, page 933 The apostle and pastor Paul uses the metaphor of the human body to describe how intimately connected we are in the church. For this struggling congregation in Corinth, Paul delivers a vital message of unity that is a mark of the church today. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. Near the beginning of Jesus public ministry, he visits his hometown of Nazareth. Using the words of Isaiah, Jesus states and claims his identity, purpose, and mission. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 9 *Apostles Creed Let us affirm our faith using the Apostles Creed, the faith in which we baptize. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayers of the People United as one body in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Pondering the mystery of your love, we offer our prayers in the name of Christ, the Word made flesh. Amen. *Share the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. 10 Offering There Is No One Like Jesus music: East African Adult Choir words: Martin The assembly responds to the Word of God by gathering an offering for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. The music is offered as a gift to the glory of God. You may give your offering in the offering plate, or by using a credit or debit card at the Giving Kiosk, or Give by Text ( ), or through Simply Giving, or by sending it to the church office. The table is set. Since each one of us is essential to the life and well-being of the body of Christ, we share our gifts and resources in order to care for one another and the world Christ came to save. At the time of presentation, Shelter for the Savior offerings that support The Plaster House will also be brought forward. *Offertory Prayer and Dedication of Gifts for Plaster House, Tanzania Let us pray. God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you and you open your hand in blessing. Through this meal, unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy. May the special offering given today for Plaster House help to transform the bodies and bring freedom from pain and disability to the children in Tanzania. We pray through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. We change lives one by precious one. The Plaster House is a home in Arusha that enables children, from all over Tanzania, to recover after they have had corrective, orthopedic, plastic or neurosurgery for a disability. You, God, have turned my Mourning into Dancing. Psalm 30:11 10

11 Meal *Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thank and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star Jesus was shown to all nations and at the beginning of his ministry he declared that his mission was to bring good news to the poor and freedom to all who are oppressed in any way. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy WOV, setting 5 11

12 Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. Sacrament of Holy Communion All who are baptized and believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion are welcome to receive the Sacrament. To facilitate flow, the ushers invite the side sections, the front few rows and then the back rows. The people come forward, using the center aisle, and may kneel or stand at the altar rail. Gluten free wafers are available. Our wine is grape juice so that all may freely receive and is served by common or individual cup. Please return to your seat using the side aisles. Children may receive the sacrament if they have completed instruction with a pastor. Children who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. 15 Commemoration for Sunday, January 27, 2019 Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe, witnesses to the faith Women as well as men were important Christian leaders from the beginning, as demonstrated by these coworkers of the apostle Paul. Lydia, a seller of purple goods, lent her home for a church; Dorcas was known for charitable works; and Phoebe was a deacon in the church at Cenchrae.
