Gathering Gathering and Fellowship Welcome and Theme of the Day Global Mission Sunday Holy Spirit s Global Mission team encourages continued exploration of and response to Jesus reply to the question Who is my neighbor, with particular emphasis on our global neighbors. The team explores and encourages a variety of connections among the ministries of our congregation and other, especially Lutheran, partners beyond our walls, with an emphasis on ministries outside our nation. Our national church, the ELCA, reminds us that our way of doing ministry is called accompaniment, walking alongside. Our lesson today from First Corinthians reminds us that we are all members of the body of Christ, each with special gifts. The unity of the church and the ways we work together reflect the glory of God. Most gloriously, the promises of God are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ, who announces and brings liberty to all held who experience bondage of any kind. Gather round. Listen up. Glimpse the glory of God. *Gathering The assembly reads responsively. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. Amen. God built the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. God calls us to be builders as well. God calls us to build our lives: to restore broken places and continue to grow. 2

3 God calls us to build our faith: to study the Word and ponder its interpretation. God calls us to build our community: to build bridges of understanding and systems of justice. God calls us to build history by fulfilling the promises of Scripture: to preach the good news of God s love and liberation for all people. *Confession and Forgiveness God calls us, yet we often fail to live in the ways of God. We ourselves are oppressed by sin and far too often have ignored the suffering of the oppressed and the needs of the poor. For this we are sorry. Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. Amen. *Gathering Song All Are Welcome ELW Hymn 641 Verses 1, 4 *Prayer of the Day Let us pray together. God, our Father, your son Jesus prayed that his followers might be one. Make all Christians throughout the world one with him as he is one with you, so that in peace and concord we may carry to the world the message of your love and of the freedom available through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. 4 Word First Reading A Reading from 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a. CEV The apostle and pastor Paul uses the metaphor of the human body to describe how intimately connected we are in the church. For this struggling congregation in Corinth, Paul delivers a vital message of unity that is a mark of the church today. The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. Some of us are Jews, and others are Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God s Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from that same Spirit. Our bodies don t have just one part. They have many parts. Suppose a foot says, I m not a hand, and so I m not part of the body. Wouldn t the foot still belong to the body? Or suppose an ear says, I m not an eye, and so I m not part of the body. Wouldn t the ear still belong to the body? If our bodies were only an eye, we couldn t hear a thing. And if they were only an ear, we couldn t smell a thing. But God has put all parts of our body together in the way that he decided is best. A body isn t really a body, unless there is more than one part. It takes many parts to make a single body. That s why the eyes cannot say they don t need the hands. That s also why the head cannot say it doesn t need the feet. In fact, we cannot get along without the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest. We take special care to dress up some parts of our bodies. We are modest about our personal parts, but we don t have to be modest about other parts. God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. If one part of our body hurts, we hurt all over. If one part of our body is honored, the whole body will be happy. Together we are the body of Christ. Each one of you is part of his body. First, God chose some people to be apostles and prophets and teachers for the church. But he also chose some to work miracles or heal the sick or help others or be leaders or speak different kinds of languages. Not everyone is an apostle. Not everyone is a prophet. Not everyone is a teacher. Not everyone can work miracles. Not everyone can heal the sick. Not everyone can speak different kinds of languages. Not everyone can tell what these languages mean. I want you to desire the best gifts. So I will show you a much better way. Word of God, Word of Light. Thanks be to God! 4

Using the words of Isaiah, Jesus states and claims his identity, purpose, and mission. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. This is the Good News! Thanks be to God! Hallelujah! 6 *Apostles Creed Let us affirm our faith using the Apostles Creed, the faith in which we baptize. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayers of the People United as one body in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need. After each petition: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Pondering the mystery of your love, we offer our prayers in the name of Christ, the Word made flesh. Amen. *Share the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The music is offered as a gift to the glory of God. You may give your offering in the offering plate, or by using a credit or debit card at the Giving Kiosk, or Give by Text ( ), or through Simply Giving, or by sending it to the church office. The table is set. Since each one of us is essential to the life and well-being of the body of Christ, we share our gifts and resources in order to care for one another and the world Christ came to save. At the time of presentation, Shelter for the Savior offerings that support The Plaster House will also be brought forward. *Offertory Prayer and Dedication of Gifts for Plaster House, Tanzania Let us pray. God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you and you open your hand in blessing. Through this meal, unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy. May the special offering given today for Plaster House help to transform the bodies and bring freedom from pain and disability to the children in Tanzania. We pray through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. We change lives one by precious one. The Plaster House is a home in Arusha that enables children, from all over Tanzania, to recover after they have had corrective, orthopedic, plastic or neurosurgery for a disability. 8 Meal *Word in Meal By the leading of a star Jesus was shown to all nations and at the beginning of his ministry he declared that his mission was to bring good news to the poor and freedom to all who are oppressed in any way. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name. Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God. The universe declares your praise: beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath. We praise you, O God. Generations bless your faithfulness: through the water; by night and day; across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future. We bless you, O God. We give you thanks for your dear Son: at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer; beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now. We thank you, O God. Words of institution Remembering his love for us on the way, at the table, and to the end, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We pray for the gift of your Spirit: in our gathering; within this meal; among your people; throughout the world. 9 *Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. *Invitation to Communion Come to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you. Sacrament of Holy Communion All who are baptized and believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion are welcome to receive the Sacrament. To facilitate flow, the ushers invite the side sections, the front few rows and then the back rows. The people come forward, using the center aisle in two lines, to receive the bread from the ministers, then go to the side to dip their bread into the wine. Grape juice is used in our celebration so that all may freely receive. In addition, gluten free wafers are available. After receiving the elements, people may kneel at the altar rail for prayer, and return to their seats using the side aisles. Children may receive the sacrament if they have completed instruction with a pastor. Children who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. 10 *Prayer Let us pray. We thank you, O God, that you have fed us at your banqueting table with bread and wine beyond compare, the very life of Christ for us. Send your Spirit with us now, that we may set the captive free, use your gifts to build one another up, and in everything reflect your glory revealed in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen *Sending and Blessing Sending The Spirit is still at work among us sending us to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to those in captivity, to be healers and a freedom force against all oppression. Go boldly as disciples, trusting in the Holy Spirit s guidance. Amen. The God of glory dwell in you richly, name you beloved, and shine brightly on your path. The blessing of almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be on you and remain with you always. 11 Commemoration for Sunday, January 27, 2019 Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe, witnesses to the faith Women as well as men were important Christian leaders from the beginning, as demonstrated by these coworkers of the apostle Paul. Lydia, a seller of purple goods, lent her home for a church; Dorcas was known for charitable works; and Phoebe was a deacon in the church at Cenchrae.
