2 St. Francis Xavier Page Three From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian, Dear friends, Three fears have gripped mankind. Before the Christian era, it was the fear of death. During the middle ages, it was the fear of guilt. Today, it is the fear of meaninglessness (Paul Tillich). It was to fill this emptiness, this meaninglessness, that Christ came into the world. I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Faith. First of all, the Eucharist is not just one among the seven sacraments. For example, while the Eucharist offers Jesus himself, other sacraments confer his grace. Through the Eucharist, we share in the life of God and become part of the body of Christ. Secondly, in the Eucharist we have a complete encounter of the Risen Lord. All other forms of Jesus encounters are real but partial. The Eucharist is the real presence of Jesus. Thirdly, the Eucharist is our food for the Journey (viaticum). Life is a journey to eternity. We need bread that keeps our life alive until we reach eternity. Jesus offers that bread in the Eucharist. Jesus said,... I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever... (John:6). Fourthly, the Eucharist is the ultimate sacrament that takes away the sin of the world. During the Last Supper Jesus said, This is my blood, the blood of the New Covenant which will be shed for all for the forgiveness of sins. (Mt: 26:28). Finally, the Eucharist offers us an action plan for Christian Life. When Jesus said Do this in memory of me he was inviting his disciples to begin a new life style; a life of sharing their blessings and bearing the burdens of others. To make our participation in the Eucharist meaningful and experiential I would like to suggest three things. First, REVERENCE: Jesus was angry when he saw people making the Temple less reverential. He said, Stop turning my Father s house into a market place. (John 2:16). Second, PREPARATION: The amount of preparation, both spiritual and physical, one takes shows the importance of the event that one is going to attend or the importance of the person whom one is going to meet. Third, PARTICIPATION: The entire Eucharistic Celebration is one single action. If we miss one part, then we miss the whole. Active and conscious participation in the full celebration is not an obligation; it is a condition to receive the full grace that the Eucharist offers. May God bless you. To be married at St. Francis Xavier, either the bride or groom needs to be Catholic and the wedding date needs to be at least six months in advance. For more In the Community Connection from July 15th, we information please contact Rita talked about the layers of chalkboards (originally the green, then the black, then the whiteboard, then in the Parish Office at 818/504the Smart Board with the projector) and how each layer showed not only the decades of history here at St. Francis Xavier, but also the progression of SANDWICH SUNDAY technology. We have now installed the latest and greatest new classroom technology which is the all-in August 12th -one interactive board. It looks like a big screen TV but it s really an enormous touch screen computer on This Sunday at 1 p.m. in Holy Cross Hall the wall. It works very similar to the SmartBoard we will be making sandwiches for the but without a projector. It works with the teacher s computer but it can also work alone. Watch for Signs of Anxiety in Your Child Everyone has had an anxious moment or two in their lives, but many people even kids struggle with daily anxiety. Anxiety can be a contributing factor in depression, and even if it s not that severe, it can make day-to-day activities tough.
