2 Dear Friends in Christ, I write to you with a full heart to share the news of my resignation as Pastor of Christ Church UCC. God is calling me to New Creation UCC in Palmer, where I will serve with my husband, Jameson. Since you hired me three and a half years ago, we have done some incredible ministry together. I have been impressed with your spirit of openness to try new things and take risks in ministry. We have crafted worship that is creative, joyful and intergenerational. We have engaged in new ministries in the areas of outreach, faith formation, stewardship and hospitality. We have empowered many individuals to serve in new leadership roles in our midst, and we have reached out and served the community around us with the love of Christ. We have said hello to many and goodbye to a few. It is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to you. Please be assured that I have learned much from you and will miss you very much. I pray that you have also learned from me, and that we both enter into the next phases of our ministries stronger for our time together. I have loved you deeply and given you the very best of what my ministry had to offer. I am so grateful for all the ways you encouraged, supported, and made room for my creativity. You have been a gift to me and my family. I will cherish the memories of our time together each time I read my children a story that was a gift from one of you, or wrap them in a blanket that one of you handmade with love. You have been an amazing community for Henry and Simon to be raised by a village, and especially for Henry's faith to develop because of such good relationships with so many caring adults. You have also offered emotional support and prayers to Jameson throughout his journey to ordained ministry. For all these things and more, we are forever grateful. The process of leaving might be hard, but it is important to me to do it well. We will need to celebrate with one another, cry with one another, and ask for and receive forgiveness from one another. In that spirit, I invite you to stop by for a visit during my drop-in office hours that are listed at the end of this letter. My final Sunday leading worship will be August 20th. It has been such a privilege to serve Christ with you in Bethlehem. I will be praying that God continue to bless you in the years ahead. I would also appreciate your prayers for me and my family in this time of transition. I will pray for you, but I will no longer be able to perform any Pastoral duties among you (baptisms, hospital calls, weddings, funerals) after August 26th. It will be because I care about you and the future of this congregation that this will be necessary. I leave you all with sadness about going, but also with great hope for the future of this congregation. There is great energy and potential, especially around creative worship, family ministries, stewardship, the single-site shelter, and continued collaboration with the other UCC churches in Bethlehem. I am hopeful that your ministry can grow and change in new ways with strong lay and pastoral leadership. It has been an honor and a privilege to walk with you through joy and sorrow, following the sound of God's Still-speaking voice. My heart is full of gratitude for the ways you have allowed me to lead you, love you and share my life and family with you. Yours in Christ, Pastor Cecilia Drop-in Office Hours Tuesdays from 10am-4pm: 7/25, 8/1, 8/15, 8/22 Wednesdays from 4-7pm: 7/26, 8/2, 8/16, 8/23 Thursdays from 9am-12pm: 7/27, 8/3, 8/17, 8/24

We also need to know our homebound members and their needs. Please inform the church office if you or a family member have been admitted to the hospital and advise the hospital that our church code is 409. Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Christ Church UCC Congregation, All good things must come to an end. This is a very old saying that people use for many situations in life. On Sunday, July 16, the leadership of Christ received a letter of resignation from Rev. Cecilia Baxter. Cecilia was welcomed into the church family in 2014 to lead the Faith Formation and Youth Ministry and took on more responsibilities in the Pastoral role after her ordination and as Pastor Jeff Bauer entered retirement from Christ Church in June of Pastor Cecilia has led our church staff and worship leaders with much vigor and creativity during the past year while we performed the ongoing search and call for the Pastor of Congregational Care. Pastor Cecilia helped to create many viable groups and committees to engage the members of our congregation in meaningful/creative worship, new ministries in outreach and hospitality, engaging more members in leadership activities, and discussions focusing on the future of Christ Church. While there is genuine disappointment in losing the great talents and enthusiasm of Pastor Cecilia, we deeply respect her reasons for moving on to an open and affirming faith community and accepting the challenges of her new calling with Jameson as her colleague in ministry. We wish Reverends Cecilia and Jameson a smooth transition into their new positions and all the best in their future endeavors. The members of the Discernment Committee remain dedicated to the search and call process and evaluated twentysix candidate profiles to date and have entered the interview stage for candidates most aligned with our pastoral opportunities. Greg Carlson, from the Center for Progressive Renewal, continues to assist the Discernment Committee in our search process and may aid us with his expertise in identifying pastor candidates beyond the national UCC job placement board, if needed. We are pleased to announce that the Interim Director of Music position will be filled by Anthony Newett. Anthony will step into this role beginning in August. The Music Search Team is chaired by Barbara Davies with members Sandy Casella, Donna Grason, Judy Koch, Anne Marie Rittoper, Donna Seibert, and Linda Yenolevich. The team has already begun the search process to fill the position of Director of Music. The job requirements were discussed and refined and then postings of the job vacancy were posted on several appropriate job search boards. Any interested applicant can send a cover letter and resume to: or directly to the Church Office, attention: Music Search Team. Once again, the leadership of Christ Church wishes Pastor Cecilia and her family, God s Grace and Blessings in the future. God s Grace and Peace, Ed Yenolevich

4 A Message from Andy Hoke, Director of Music Dear Leadership, Members, and Friends of Christ Church: It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the position of Director of Music for Christ Church UCC Bethlehem. For the last two plus years I have enjoyed getting to know you, working with you, directing the church s fine musical ensembles, and playing our wonderful instruments. I have enjoyed working with a very talented and collegial staff and musicians who inspire and support me both personally and professionally. I have decided to accept a position as Minister of Music at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlisle, PA. Many of you will recognize that Carlisle is my hometown. The position will be full time, so I will have the chance to trade in three jobs for just one. It will also be nice for both me and the family to be able to go home each night. I have never served in a Lutheran church, but it has a reputation for beautiful hymnody and sung liturgy. I will have adult, children s, and handbell choirs, and I will serve as organist and accompanist. The church also has an established arts series in which I would serve an advisory role. The position begins on or soon after August 1 of this year. You may see my family from time to time in Bethlehem. With one child in New York City, Bethlehem is a convenient meeting place for the five of us to get together. Let s continue our friendships after I move on. I will stay in touch with you and I look forward to hearing updates on Christ Church UCC. Yours in Christ, Andy Hoke Stand Up Bethlehem An event held to aid the homeless of Bethlehem. 6 Strengthen the Church (STC) is a special mission offering to reimagine and build the future of the UCC. Shared at the conference and national levels, STC largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Please use the envelope provided in this Parish News or in the pew racks. COMING IN OCTOBER October 31, 1517 is the date used to mark the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. An unknown German monk named Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses a document listing points he wished to debate with church officials on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. From this obscure beginning the flames of change were fanned into a movement that spread across the world and changed the Christian Church forever. Save the dates: Sundays, October 1, 8, 15, and 22. Pastor John will lead a four-part study session commemorating the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. You are invited to join us those mornings in the All- Purpose Room at 9:15 am. Copies of the study booklet are available through the Church Office.
