252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, 2-3 Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (Small Groups, 25 minutes) *1. Easter Story Wreath What You Need: Wreath and Wreath images, Family Gospel Presentation What You Do: Have the kids assemble the wreath and discuss the meaning of each picture. Image Order o Jesus enters Jerusalem (palm branch and donkey pictures) o The Last Supper (bread and wine pictures) o Jesus Prays in Gethsemane (praying hands picture) o Jesus is Crucified (cross picture) o Resurrection (empty tomb picture) o Ascension (Jesus in clouds picture) o Holy Spirit Comes Down (dove picture) What You Say: Today we re going to put together a wreath to remind us of the Easter Story. Palm Branch and Donkey Last week we celebrated Palm Sunday, the Triumphal Entry when Jesus entered Jerusalem. The Triumphal Entry will be represented by the palm branch and the donkey on our wreath. The Last Supper The last time that the disciples shared a meal with Jesus is called the last supper. That s when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples. Now we can add the bread and wine to our wreath. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane After the Last Supper, Jesus took His disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane where He prayed to confirm that it was God s Will for Jesus to die on the Cross. God said that it was. Jesus is Crucified Jesus was arrested, made fun of (mocked) and beaten. After all of that suffering, He was led to the Cross to be Crucified. Death on a Cross was the death set for a criminal. But Jesus wasn t a criminal, Jesus is the Son of God. The only person to ever walk on the earth and live a perfect life. Jesus was able to do that because while He walked on earth, Jesus was both fully God and fully man. Jesus never sinned. Let s add the cross to our wreath. Resurrection After being dead in the grave for three days, Jesus defeated death and rose from the grave. Jesus is ALIVE! The tomb is EMPTY! Let s add the empty tomb to our wreath. Ascension After Jesus rose from the dead, He walked on the earth and talked with His disciples and others for 40 days. After 40 days, Jesus went up to Heaven, ascending into the clouds. Let s add the image of Jesus in the clouds to our wreath The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by (jpaganini/mbcloudoun/4.16). 2

252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, 2-3 Holy Spirit Comes Down After Jesus ascended into Heaven, He didn t leave us. Jesus said He would send a helper to be with us. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always if we accept Christ as our Savior. Gospel Presentation Do you know why Jesus died on the Cross? Jesus died on the Cross to pay the penalty for our sin, mine and yours. Sin is anything that you do that you shouldn t and anything that you don t do that you should. God doesn t like sin. Sin separates us from God. Before Jesus came to the earth, people made sacrifices to God to wipe away their sins. These sacrifices were lambs brought to be sacrificed at the altar of God. But when Jesus, the only man to ever live a perfect, sinless life, shed His blood on the Cross, He covered all of our sins once and for all. No additional sacrifice needs to be made if you accept Christ as your Savior and believe in Him. Refer to and Review Family Gospel Presentation Packet. 2. Bible Review (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: Bibles What You Do: Look up the following scriptures to read the Easter story in the Bible Matthew 21:8-9 The people were praising Jesus as He entered Jerusalem. What are ways that we can praise Jesus today? Matthew 26:26 What does Jesus say the bread and the wine represent as part of the Passover meal? What do we do in church now to commemorate and remember what Jesus said? Matthew 26:39 How can we use Jesus example in the garden of Gethsemane to teach us how to pray? Matthew 27:46-50 Jesus gave Himself as a sacrifice for each of us. That is an amazing love. Jesus showed us love by putting our needs before His. How can we show that kind of love to others? Matthew 28:6 What are we celebrating today because of the Resurrection? Acts 1:9 Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. How can we allow the Holy Spirit to shine through us to love others? 3. Worth Saving? (application activity / review the Bible story) What You Need: Index cards, markers What You Do: Give each kid two index cards and a marker. On one card, instruct the kids to write something they have lost. (It doesn t have to be something currently lost just anything they ve lost in the past.) On the other ask them to write something they currently have or own that they would give up in order to get back the lost item. Collect the lost cards and the give up cards in separate piles and mix the piles up The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by (jpaganini/mbcloudoun/4.16). 3

252 Groups April , Week 3 Small Group, 2-3 Randomly draw a card from the lost items pile and a card from the give up pile. The randomness should give you some serious and some funny combinations. Ask the kids if the lost item is worth saving by giving up the other item. You can let them vote by moving from one side of the room to the other or by standing up versus sitting down. If you end up with a particularly contentious pair of items, let kids have a friendly debate about the merits of giving up one item to gain the other one back. What You Say: What have you lost that you would give anything to get back? Right after Jesus died, it seemed to the disciples that Jesus had given himself up for nothing. But they would come to realize that Jesus gave Himself up for us. That shows us how much Jesus loves us and how important having a relationship with us is to God. It also shows us that Jesus doesn t just command us to try harder. That s not what being a follower of Jesus is about. Jesus promises to be with us and help us follow His example. He will help us to value putting others first when the world tells us to value only success. Jesus will help us give up what we deserve in order to put others first. He can help us do that because that is exactly what He did for us. [Make It Personal] (Talk about a time when you gave up something you deserved or felt like you deserved in order to put someone else first.) [Bottom Line] I can put others first because Jesus put me first. Pray and Dismiss What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Ask one person to thank God for sending His son. Ask another person to thank God for that Jesus willingly took our punishment on the cross. Ask a third person to thank God for the opportunity to be forgiven and to spend eternity with Him in Heaven. What You Say: Dear God, we are so grateful that you sent Jesus to be the Savior of the world. You rescued us by making a way for us to be forgiven. As we celebrate Easter with friends and family, help us to remember that we can have Joy at Easter because You died for our sins and rose from the dead so that we could live forever with You in heaven. We Love You. Amen The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by (jpaganini/mbcloudoun/4.16). 4

God s Family Gospel Presentation God Loved John 3:16 says that God Loved. (hold up heart image) How do you know that God loves you? (allow children to respond) God loved you before you were born. He created you! He loves you right now. But there is something that separates us from Him. It s called sin. It s the stuff we do wrong against God. Not just the big things like murder and stealing. It can be as simple as lying or being selfish. Romans 3:23 says that All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. Because God is perfect, there is no way we can get into God s family on our own. But because God loves us, He did what people in love do. He gave. God Gave Hold up the cross image and continue reading the verse. If we keep reading John 3:16, what does it tell us after it says that God so loved the world? That s right! It says He gave His only Son. Do you know who God s Son is? That s right! God s Son is Jesus. God gave us Jesus! God gave the most important, valuable and perfect thing He had for you. He knew that our sin would keep us out of his family forever because God can t be around sin. We are apart from God and would stay that way, but because God loved, He gave His Son to fix that relationship. Jesus gave up His life on the cross to pay for our sin. He came to make a way for you to be in God s family. Jesus is God s gift to us! The only way to make sure that we are with God for eternity! We Believe But when you receive a gift, what do you have to do first? You open it. God said you could open His gift by believing in Jesus. Believing simply means to trust. We ve been talking about trust a lot this month, right? Trusting is kind of like this chair. When you sit in a chair, you put all your weight on it. You trust that it will hold you up. That s what it s like to believe in, or trust in, this gift. To open the gift that God gave you, you trust in Jesus with your whole life and rest in the fact that He died for you. In Romans 10:9-10 it says that we need to tell Jesus what we believe about our sin and what we believe about Him. Would anyone like to share what you believe about your sin or what you believe about Jesus? We Receive Hold up the gift box. What does John 3:16 tell us we receive when we believe and trust in Jesus? That s right! It tells us that anyone who believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. That means we get to spend forever and ever with God in a place that He made perfect. And once you receive this gift, it can never be taken away. There is NOTHING you can do to lose your place in God s family! Would anyone like to talk to Jesus in prayer and become a part of God s family by believing in Him?

Jesus Enters Jerusalem The crowd spread garments on the road and others spread palm branches. They shouted 'Hosanna in the highest!' Matt. 21:8-9 The Last Supper Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it saying, 'Take this and eat it; this is my body.' Matt. 26:26 Jesus Prays in Gethsemane He fell on his face and prayed, 'My father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; but not as I will but as you will.' Matt. 26:39 Jesus is Crucified Jesus cried out with a loud voice 'My God my God, why have you forsaken me?' He cried again and yielded up His spirit. Matt. 27:46,50 Resurrection of Jesus He is not here for He has risen! Matt. 28:6 The Ascension of Jesus As they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. Acts 1:9 The Holy Spirit Comes Down And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:3-4

READ 1 PETER 5:6 DAY 4 Have you ever been caught out in the rain without a hat or without an umbrella? The water messes up your hair, you get cold, and all your stuff gets wet. Pretty miserable, right? When it rains, I bet the first thing you try and do is run and find somewhere dry to stand. Maybe, you find somewhere with a roof or awning to give you some shelter. On the flip side, doesn t it feel great when the rain falls, but you re somewhere nice and warm and dry? Isn t it relaxing to hear the raindrops on the roof? It s a totally different experience, to say the least! When you put yourself under God s mighty hand, that means you re choosing to live under His protection. It s like you re staying warm and dry through the storms of life. The storms still happen, but you ve chosen to trust God and be humble enough to follow His bigger plan. That s what Jesus did. He trusted God s plan, because He knew He had to die on the cross for our sins. He knew His mission was to put us first. And He knew He was going to come back to life and show everyone, once and for all, that God s Big Story was true! CHOOSE to trust God and stand under His protection. THINK ABOUT IT: 1. What s a storm you ve recently been going through or that you re going through right now? 2. What could it look like to trust God in the middle of that storm? 3. How is it an act of humility to trust God in the middle of something tough? What does that show to other people? READ PHILIPPIANS 2:8 DAY 1 Being humble takes a lot of courage because being humble costs us something. When we put others first, that means we don t get to have things our way. We don t get to be the center of attention. We don t even get the promise of a thank you in return. But you know what? When Jesus put us first, it cost Him everything. We can look to Jesus example and see that He was humble enough to obey everything God asked Him to do even when it meant going to die on the cross for the sins of the world. He gave His life because He LOVES us. It was all about love. Jesus saw that there was a gap between us not-perfect people and our perfect God. We sin and our sin separates us from God. But God sent Jesus to build a bridge over the gap for us. When we trust in what Jesus did for us personally, we have the promise that God forgives our sins and that we can have a relationship with Him forever. LET LOVE motivate you to put others first. THINK ABOUT IT: 1. Would you say love is always the reason you follow God and live the way He wants you to live? Why or why not? 2. Why is love the ultimate motivator for us to serve others? 3. How did Jesus prove that His actions came from His great LOVE for us? WEEK 3 2ND - 5TH

READ 1 PETER 1:8 DAY 2 READ LUKE 9:48 DAY 3 Does Easter feel like a celebration to you? The candy is great, of course, and everyone loves to dress up and take pictures and see family. But when you think about the reason for Easter, the story can seem a little dark. Don t you think? Easter only feels like a celebration when we know the full story. Put yourself in the shoes of the disciples, the day after Jesus died. They thought it was all over. Their friend was gone! They had heard Him teach, and they had seen Him perform miracles with their own two eyes. But now it looked like everything He said about being the Son of God must not have been true after all. So, when Jesus appeared to them and they knew He was ALIVE, it was the greatest news in the history of the world! Nothing could have surprised them more. We can look back, over 2,000 years later and see the whole picture. But for them, it was brand-new! Suddenly, they could see that Jesus was exactly who He said He was. The reason we celebrate is because at Easter, Jesus rose from the dead and proved that it was all true! Because of what He did, we can know for sure that He s God s Son. We can have purpose and live for Him. And we can be filled with a glorious joy that can t be put into words. THINK about what Jesus did at Easter and why it really is a reason to celebrate! THINK ABOUT IT: 1. Why do you think it s so important to our faith to know that Jesus rose from the dead? 2. Why is important for us to remember the joy that the disciples must have felt when they understood for the first time? 3. Have you been able to experience that same joy this Easter season? Think about your class at school. There are probably some kids who seem cooler or more popular than others. Maybe the not-as-cool kids get picked on sometimes. (Side note: It s important for you to know that no one really feels like the cool one. Deep down, everyone wants to fit in.) What about on your team, or in whatever other group you re part of outside of school? Does the same thing happen there? Are there some people who seem super-popular or successful, and some who have a tougher time? That s the way we tend to see the people around us. And the disciples did the same thing arguing about which one of them would be the most important person (the VIP). But Jesus actually turned all that upside down. He found a little kid standing nearby, and He told them that the little kid the one who was considered least important, that no one was paying attention to he was the most important! SHOW love to the ones who may not seem like VIPs because Jesus sure thinks they are! THINK ABOUT IT: 1. Why do you think Jesus singled out a little kid to make His point? How do you think the disciples reacted? 2. In your class, or on your team, how can you make everyone feel like a VIP? Who do you need to reach out to? 3. Has someone ever reached out to you when you didn t feel like a VIP?
