Pastor s Musings Pastor George Loveland pastor@winsteadumc.org As we entered the season of Pentecost back in June, we found the original disciples, with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers cloistered in the Upper Room. (Acts 1:14) In the very first Christian worship service on record, the seed of our church as the living body of Jesus Christ in the world, the circle of who is included is expanding. And Luke tells us that this first congregation of worshippers were constantly devoting themselves to prayer. They were engaged in what a member of Winstead s family has called inreach. The outreach came later, when the Holy Spirit came...suddenly [with] a sound like the rush of a violent wind,... filled the entire house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:2) As we move into a new season of ministry together, let us take this first gathering of Christians as our model. I am inviting all of Winstead s members and friends to a series of listening visits. You will have the opportunity to sign up either for individual visits with me or for small group sessions. Our Staff Parish Relations Committee will help organize these listening visits, and will report regularly to the congregation about what we are hearing. We will ask three questions: 1) What does Winstead do well? 2) What could Winstead do better? 3) What do you want Winstead to look like five years from now? My goal is to hear everyone s response to these questions before the summer of I believe this intentionally structured inreach will help us clarify our goals and identify our gifts as we go forth together to be the heart and hands of Jesus in the world. Another form of inreach that you ve heard about in Sunday morning announcements is our Cares & Concerns Team. This team meets weekly to share information about church members who are no longer able to join us in worship, and to explore ways we can keep them connected to their church family. If you know of anyone who needs special attention, please share this information with a member of the Cares & Concerns team: Denny Rutter, Marge Rutter, Barbara Whaley, Carolyn Nagle, Marty Johnson, Shirley Galloway, or me. The Shut-ins contact list is updated weekly and is posted on the bulletin board in the hallway across from the church office. The Outreach Committee and Hand-in- Hand continue to burst forth with the power of the Holy Spirit. We meet August 1 to plan and coordinate activities for the coming year. From preliminary meetings I ve had, I am fully confident that we will continue to engage our community with the energy of that powerful wind that filled the Upper Room. I will have more details on this in the September newsletter. And finally, I would like to thank you all for the warm and gracious welcome lunch that you hosted for my wife, Rev. Tuck Taylor, and me on July 16. The love and genuine Christian fellowship is in the air we breathe at Winstead. I (Continued on page 9) 2
Kids & Winstead Sunday, August. 6 (5 pm - 7 pm) ECHO Youth Sunday August. 13 (5 pm - 7 pm) ECHO Youth Sunday August. 20 Sunday August. 27 Sunday September 3 NO ECHO Youth NO ECHO Youth NO ECHO (Labor Day Weekend) Please continue to pray for our Bus Ministry: This is an important part of our Children s and Youth Ministry. Please pray for 1) financing of the bus and finding one, and 2) church members to be committed to this ministry with their time and effort! You can do this by being a bus buddy (building relationship through riding the bus). We could always use more bus drivers. But most importantly we need Prayer Buddies (church members who will pray for one of our bus riders, get to know them by talking with them and/or sitting with them if they are alone with the intent of building a Christcaring relationship). If you are interested, please contact or JB Youth Fundraising : We have Bo Books again (Bojangles Booklets - $5 each). Parents, this is a great way for your kids to raise money for any youth trip. Check with Marty for details. Marty Johnson Youth Director Look Up Lodge August,

Opportunities to Serve Hand-in-Hand Ministry By Sanda Hight After meeting with the new Vick Elementary School principal, Pam Walthall, on July 24, we have an idea of the Hand -in-hand activities that we will provide for the school during the school year. Hand-in-Hand will not provide tutoring for selected students in the classrooms at Vick this year, yet we will have opportunities to assist with after-school tutoring activities through Seeds of Hope. Please stay in touch with opportunities through the church newsletter, bulletin, and announcements during worship, as well as announcements through other avenues. Mrs. Walthall has requested that we continue with the following activities this year: Prayer Partners, Classroom Buddies, volunteers with special events such as the Book Fairs, Angel Tree, End of Grade test proctors and hall monitors at the end of the school year, clothes closet donations, school supplies drives, periodic treats for Vick staff, Hand-in-Hand Sunday in May, and other activities that may be requested during the school year. WE WILL NEED HELP WITH ALL THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES, SO PLEASE LISTEN FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP AS ANNOUNCEMENTS ARE MADE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. As we have emphasized in past years, there is an opportunity for almost everyone to participate in the Hand-in-Hand Outreach Ministry, starting with prayer for the effectiveness of the ministry. Our first activity for this school year will be the back-to-school breakfast for the Vick staff on Monday, August 21. We will be calling people soon to help with donating food and serving the breakfast, which will begin at 8:00 am. We will start to set up the breakfast at 7:30. If we don t call you, you can call us to volunteer! The Hand-in-Hand Committee will meet on Tuesday, August 1, at 7:00 pm in the Choir Room. Join us as we plan our activities for the year. This year will be our 17th year in partnership and ministry with Vick Elementary School. Let us all make prayer for Hand-in-Hand and the Vick Elementary School family an important part of our prayer life. Wear Your Name Tag Please remember to wear your name tag each Sunday. Take yours from the table to the right of the Sanctuary doors and return it after the service so it is available next week. If you don t have a name tag, contact the office. Thanks! August,
Opportunities to Serve LOGOS By Marty Johnson You know it is really not that far off... Fall. And we are so excited that as Fall comes, so does LOGOS! Our Fall semester of LOGOS starts on Sunday, September 10. Please keep that date in mind. We will be giving you a lot of information in the coming month and more information in next month s newsletter. But as we wind down summer I want to remind you that LOGOS is for everyone! I actually had a conversation with someone who reminded me that one of LOGOS main purposes is to bring all of our adults together. LOGOS will give them the opportunity to grow and become disciples by helping our children and youth learn more about worship, more about who God and Jesus are in the Bible, and more about each other and who we are in Christ. This will be done through fellowship and a meal time together! What an awesome way to finish every Sabbath day and to have a great meal with all of your family in Hood Hall! That's what I want you to think about as you finish up your summer, whether it is being on vacation, getting a few days away, or just enjoying the long days of summer. I hope you will get excited along with me about spending Sunday afternoons with our whole family and finishing it off with a great meal - topped off with laughter and love! As you hear about all of the opportunities to be involved with in the LOGOS Ministry, please find out which opportunity best fits you so that together, we can fulfill the mission of Winstead United Methodist Church: To know God and to make God known by strengthening children and families so that all may know God better! If you have any questions regarding LOGOS, or if you would like to talk about how you could be more involved, please feel free to call my cell number ( ). The 2017 Altar Flower Calendar is available in the hall across from the office. Honor a loved one, celebrate a special occasion, or show appreciation with a flower arrangement for the chancel. You will be billed directly by the florist for the flowers. You may take your flowers home following the worship service. 6
Opportunities to Serve Outreach Committee News By MaryEllen Bass The Summer Food Drive is in full swing and we will continue to receive donations through the month of August. (See the back cover for a list of specifically needed items.) Thank you for donating to this important outreach ministry to feed the hungry in our community. Monetary donations are also accepted to help the CHEW program and Hope Station. Thanks to all who helped with the Hope Garden from planting, tending, harvesting, and delivering the delicious vegetables. The garden is winding down but was a success again this year by providing healthy and delicious home grown vegetables for our community. Watch the newsletter for a Red Wagon event being planned for this Fall. The Outreach Committee will meet Tuesday, August 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. Annual Chicken Barbeque set for Friday, October 6 By Margaret Brinkley First I want to thank EVERYONE who helped out at the last minute last year to make our 2016 barbecue such a success. You don t know how much I appreciated the outpouring of support since it was a last minute decision for me to take over the leadership. We want to make 2017 event better. It may be August, but we need to start thinking about this year. Please ask off from your jobs and save October 6 to help out. This is our BIG fundraiser so we need everyone to pitch in. Unless you ve already scheduled a trip, PLEASE stay home and take this day to help our church and ME. More information will follow later and a meeting will be scheduled. I will be calling to find out if you can work your usual jobs, but to help me out, if you are willing to keep your position, please call me at (252) and let me know. Leave a message and phone number if I am not available. Thank you again for your support. August,
