5 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community A SPECIAL RECOGNITION OF SANDY GAUDET After many years of volunteering, Sandy Gaudet has retired from her responsibilities as coordinator of the parish s food pantry. Her work was a calling and she exceeded her commitment so many times by going the extra mile in her work. She often mentioned that the clients she served and the volunteers were all very special to her. Sandy had so much energy in her work and she never held back doing the extra chores that the position required. She was diligent in her work and many times stocked the pantry from her own generosity always looking for sales and specials being held in all stores. A laborer in Christ s vineyard, she never seemed to tire from any added responsibilities as time progressed and the pantry helped more in the community. Greeting the clients with a smile and a positive word always encouraged them and gave our parish a welcoming face. Many blessings to her and her husband John, who stood by her through many years of her commitment to others. She will be greatly missed by all who encountered her and worked with her. Classes for all K-7th grade students start Sunday, September 16, THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our Eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Call Karen at to register or for more information. General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. You may register in the parish by calling the parish office. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. BAPTISM: Parents should be registered in the parish unless they have made other arrangements with the Pastoral Team. Pre-baptismal class is required for both parents and godparents. To schedule a baptism, arrangements must be made by the parents of the child to be baptized, by calling Terry in the Parish Office at Registration for the Baptismal Preparation Class may also be made by calling Terry. MARRIAGE: Make arrangements by contacting the parish office at Must be registered, active, and contributing members six months prior to the wedding. The couple should meet with the priest or deacon prior to setting a wedding date or making plans for the reception. CONFESSIONS: Saturday immediately following the 5:30pm Mass (except the week before and after a Communal Penance Service or if a wedding or parish function is scheduled.) Also available by appointment. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY is held the 4th Sunday of each month after weekend Masses. Refreshments are served after these Masses. This is also a great way to socialize with your fellow parishioners.

7 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Unlike the Gospel of Mark, the Gospels of Matthew and Luke both include accounts of the birth of Jesus. We ll take a look at both of these nativity narratives this week. In Matthew s account, Joseph lives in Bethlehem; Mary, who is betrothed to Joseph, is discovered to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, being a just man, is about to divorce her quietly when an angel appears to him in a dream. The angel tells Joseph not to fear taking Mary for his wife, for what has been begotten within her is from a Spirit, the Holy One. So Joseph takes her for his wife. Matthew states Joseph has no relations with Mary until after the birth of a son. Matthew looks at this from a purely male perspective. Once the birth happens, relations could begin; in Matthew s mind it would be impossible for a man to remain celibate. In Luke s Gospel, Joseph and Mary live in Nazareth. The Angel Gabriel comes to Mary saying, Hail, favored one, the Lord is with you. Other translations add Blessed are you among women. The angel continues, Do not be afraid for you have found favor with God. And see, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son and you will declare his name Jesus. She questions this as I have intimacy with no man. The angel says, A Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will over shadow you. And your offspring will be called Holy also, the son of God. Mary gives birth to a son and at his circumcision he is named Jesus and they return to Nazareth. We need to look more closely at Luke s account because it relates to two doctrines of the Church, namely, Mary s Immaculate Conception and her Assumption into heaven. The first doctrine is that Mary was conceived without original sin; this can be interpreted from the announcement of the angel that Mary is the favored one, the Lord is with her. Remember, redemption will take place when Jesus dies for us. Some translations say Mary is full of grace as found in the prayer, the Hail Mary. A teaching that proceeds from this is that Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. (The Immaculate Conception is commonly confused with the Virgin Birth of Jesus. Jesus s birth is covered by the Doctrine of Incarnation, while the Immaculate Conception deals with the conception of Mary, not that of her son.) The second doctrine derived from this is that, because Mary was preserved from original sin, her body did not undergo corruption and was assumed into heaven. There was a long history of celebration of these two feasts in both the Eastern (Orthodox) and the Western (Roman Catholic) Churches centuries before the doctrines were dogmatically defined.
