(BAS) The Calendar Sts Cyril (c ) and Methodius (c ) February 14th may be best known as St Valentine s Day, but in our calendar it is the feast of Sts Cyril (originally named Constantine) and Methodius, brothers who are the Apostles of the Slavs. They were born in Thessalonica, ordained as priests and served initially at Constantinople, where Cyril s abilities led to missions on behalf of the Emperor. The most well known (in 862) was at the request of Great Moravia (now Czech Republic and Slovakia), to establish a church structure that would balance the influence of German bishops and priests. Cyril is popularly considered to have promptly created the Glagolitic alphabet in order to write Slavonic for government and the church. It seems, however, that this script was already around, but through Cyril s sponsorship it became officially accepted. In using glagolitic and in adopting Slavonic for the liturgy the brothers made a crucial contribution to Slav culture and identity. This, however, irritated the German ecclesiastics no end, and so the brothers returned to Byzantium for assistance in 868. On the way they were diverted to Rome, where they were greatly celebrated, and Cyril became a monk, taking his name. He died shortly thereafter, on February 14th. Methodius was consecrated by the Pope and returned to Moravia as Archbishop, only to become tangled in renewed political strife with the Archbishop of Salzburg. He was even put in jail for two years, and the Pope had to obtain his release. The tension was proprietorial, but the flash point was whether the liturgy should be in Latin (Western practice) or Slavonic (Eastern practice). Methodius popularity and the desire of Rome to maintain good relations with Constantinople secured his primacy, but he was asked to use Latin and disobeyed, no doubt raising his reputation with the Slavs. His insistence on using the vernacular, and his desire to be at peace with both the East and West illustrate his vision that the Gospel is for both individuals and nations. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' St Bart s Sunday Morning Programs for Children and Youth Our Nursery, coordinated by Julia Laku, is open from 10:15 a.m. until after coffee hour. Julia welcomes all infants and children up to the age of 3. The Nursery is in the far left corner of the hall. Sunday School, for children aged 4-12, takes place in the church hall and begins before the 10:30 a.m. service. Carole Schmidt is our Sunday School coordinator. Youth Group meets Sunday mornings in the Youth Group room in our church hall. As well, regular meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the parish hall. 5 A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. April 8-10 Spring Retreat in the Country St. Bart's invites you to a weekend retreat April 8-10 at Stillwaters Wilderness Retreat ( on a private lake a 1½-hour drive from Ottawa. The retreat begins Friday 6:00 p.m. & ends Sunday at 3:00 p.m. It includes morning & evening prayer & group meditation & will largely be silent to maximize opportunities to hear the still, small voice of God.
