8 May 1, 2016 The Sixth Sunday of Easter 8 My Dear Parishioners, In the last few months, a few of my volunteers, Michele Garaffa, Sue Maese, Rosalie Bonavise and I brought some cooked food to many of our sick and elderly Parishioners who are homebound. I wish our visits had been longer and I wish I could visit more of them. However, it was so nice to see these Parishioners and to let them know that we care about them and pray for them. Truly, they are admirable in the way they endure difficult illnesses and losses. At the same time, their caregivers are admirable, caring for them day and night, day after day. So please pray for the caregivers who sacrifice so much to care for loved ones. Also, pray for families that they come together and help one another care for a loved one. Recently, I read a quote from a homily that Pope Francis gave on March 25 th, He wasn t the Pope yet, but I think his words are appropriate here. How are your parents? How are your grandparents? How are your in-laws? Do you care about them? Do you visit them? Sometimes it is very painful but there is no other choice than to put them in a nursing home for health reasons or family situations. But once they are there, do I set aside a Saturday or Sunday to be with them? Do you care for that life that is fading away and that gave life to you? Good questions, aren t they? As we ponder them, let us pray that during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we will be instruments of God s love and mercy to one another. Thank you and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy NEEDED A Queen Size Set of Bedding A couple can t afford to purchase a set of bedding. At present, they do not have a bed. If you can donate one, new or if used, in good condition, please let me know. This couple would be very grateful to you. My number is x 124. Thank you so much and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy Sisters of St. Dominic Luncheon Every June, my Religious Community from Amityville, has a luncheon for the benefit of our sick and retired Dominican Sisters. While we have Sisters who are still working and volunteering at 80 years of age and over, we have many, many Sisters who are elderly and very ill. I am so inspired and grateful to them for their faith, prayers, example and dedicated service. For the luncheon, we need new gifts, valued at $3 and above. These gifts will be used in raffle baskets and as prizes. Perhaps, you have some that you received at Christmas time. If you would like to donate such gifts, please bring them to me in the Parish Center by MAY 17 th the latest. We also need gift certificates that will be raffled at the luncheon. In the past, the wonderful Parishioners of St. Matthew s have been very, very helpful to us. Please know how very grateful I am to you for always being so good to us. The Sisters and I promise to pray for you and for all of our wonderful benefactors. Truly, some of the nicest people in the world are at St. Matthew s. I m sure you ll agree! Thank you and God bless you Sister Kay McCarthy.

10 May 1, 2016 The Sixth Sunday of Easter 10 Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world missions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER: God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. May Universal: Respect for Women That in every country of the world, women may be honored and respected and that their essential contribution to society may be highly esteemed. Evangelization: Holy Rosary That families, communities, and groups may pray the Holy Rosary for evangelization and peace. Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program Months Seven and Eight Developing Baby You are in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. 20 May 1, 2016 The Sixth Sunday of Easter 20 Catholics For Freedom of Religion Freedom of Conscience in Jeopardy for Health Care Workers: Recent times have seen numerous incidents in which nurses, doctors, hospital staff and other health care workers are being pressured, required and forced to provide morally-controversial procedures. * NY City operating room nurse, Cathy Cenzon-DeCarlo, was forced to participate in a gruesome dismemberment of a 22-week-old-fetus, threatened with loss of her nursing license and job. (usccb.org, 12/4/15) * CA started forcing almost all health plans to pay for all abortions without exemption for moral or religious objections. Catholic Bishops fear a mandate to force religious hospitals is next. CA policy clearly violates existing law but there are loopholes and weaknesses that make federal laws ineffective. * Alaska Supreme Court ordered a pro-life hospital to allow its facilities to be used for abortions. (cnsnews.com, 3/29/16) * An American accreditation agency mandated all medical students must receive abortion training. It took passage of a federal law to protect students' rights of conscience. (cqrcengage.com/catholic charities) Cardinal Dolan, NY, and Archbishop Lori, Baltimore, chair pro-life and religious liberty committees urging support of a proposed Conscience Protection Act now before Congress. "While federal laws exist now to protect conscience rights in health care, there is clearly a need for legislation to make this protection truly effective," said a USCCB spokesman. (catholicnewsagency.com, 4/2/16) "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty." Thomas Jefferson Events: Sat., May 7, 2016, 5-6:30PM, Congressman Lee Zeldin, Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, 258 Eastport Manor Rd., Manorville, NY Prep For Success GetMeA36@gmail.com Prep For Success will be holding ACT Practice Testing workshops in the Parish Center from 9:30AM-1:30PM on Saturdays beginning April 30 th through June 4 th to prepare students for the June 11 th ACT Exam.
