5 April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent 5 Dear Friends, This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. In the older calendar it was known as Passion Sunday; marking a change in the Lenten Season. The last two weeks of Lent were known as Passiontide. It was and is a dramatic change: symbolized by the veiling of sacred images in the church. I vividly remember entering the lobby of the high school I went to, Saint Pius X Preparatory Seminary, and seeing the large statue of Our Lady that stood there veiled in purple cloth. Everywhere one looked, purple cloth sheathed all the familiar images of Saints and Angels. Even the very Crucifix was hidden from view. I think it was and is a very visible way of reminding us of the Passion. After a time of drastic pruning of the tree of the accumulated customs and practices of the Roman Rite; we see the Church asking us again to restore some of the old family customs. One of which is the ringing of bells at the elevation of the Host and Chalice at Mass. Those bells will fall silent on Holy Thursday, only to ring out again to proclaim the Resurrection. The familiar Holy Water is withdrawn from the fonts, to be replenished at Easter. Another of these customs is this striking and dramatic covering of all the sacred images in the church. The Scriptures speak of Jesus hiding Himself; God hiding His face, and the Lord covered up in the tomb for three days. The Crucifix will be unveiled on Good Friday in answer to that ancient cry of the Liturgy Behold the wood of the Cross! and will be the object of veneration on that day s Solemn Liturgy. On Holy Saturday, the great Vigil of Easter, the risen and glorified Christ will be revealed to us, much like to the disciples on that early morn; as well as the statues of Our Lady and Saint Joseph. Historians tell us that earliest drama in Western civilization is not only the ancient Greek theatre but also the Liturgy of the Church. We are fed not only by words, but by signs and wonders through all our senses. Now the focus of Lent shifts from the theme of personal repentance and Death of the Lord. Why this ancient, now restored, custom? The veiled images symbolize a world without God. Familiar faces and images, now hidden, remind us of what the world can be; and human lives can be, without God. Nowhere to look, nothing to look at: but emptiness. On Good Friday, the Liturgy finally returns the Crucifix to us, unveiled with the cry Behold!...Look! Look at what it cost God to forgive our sins! Look at the price of sin! Look at the love He has for us! Centuries ago, the great and ardent light of medieval spirituality, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, preaching on the Passion, pointed to the Crucifix, and asked, WHO did this??? He gave the answer: LOVE did this!!! Heedless of His dignity!!! These last two weeks of Lent are still different in our Liturgy. The theme of the Passion comes to the fore. Dear friend, we still have two weeks to make a good Lent: still time to voluntarily offer to Jesus a little bit of the Cross. Even if we have failed in our Lenten resolutions; there is still time to make it up! If we walk with Him in these last two weeks What an Easter we will have!!! God s blessings, Father Hewes

6 April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent 6 About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy: The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a full Mass, it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Communion after a proper spiritual preparation. The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, readings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above. PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday. Stations of the Cross every Friday of Lent at 7:00 PM in the Church. Eucharistic Holy Hour Tuesdays after the 9:00 AM Mass. St. Matthew s Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Closed 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. for lunch Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Unique religious gifts, rosaries, books, fonts, statues, picture frames, wedding unity candles, vestments and so much more The Gift Shop is located in the Parish Center, across from the Receptionist area. All Proceeds Benefit Our Parish Ministry!

9 April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent 9 March, 2018 Dear Friends: The Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving open our hearts to the presence of our loving and ever present God. It is a time for reflecting on the enormous sacrifice our Lord made on Good Friday. It s also a time for making sacrifices of our own. One of the purest sacrifices we can make is also one of the most loving. And it begins when we show compassion to others. As Pope Francis said, Prayer brings us back to the path of truth about ourselves and about God; fasting makes us share the reality of so many people who face the anguish of hunger and makes us pay more attention to our neighbor; charity is a blessed occasion to collaborate with God's providence in benefit of His children.. When you give to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, your neighbors experience the merciful presence of Christ through Outreach and Catholic Charities programs that serve the basic needs of the poor, troubled, weak and oppressed in our community. This Appeal also supports our efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship. Consider the multitudes of children who are taught the faith through our Catholic schools and religious education programs and are able to continue their faith journey as they benefit from Campus, Young Adult and Youth Ministry Programs. It also funds the resources necessary to support our seminarians who are studying and preparing to serve us as priests. If you have not yet made a pledge as of yet, please consider participating in the 2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal as one way of collaborating with God's providence in benefit of His children. May this Lent be a source of dramatic missionary growth both in our lives and for our great Diocese. I keep you and your family in my Masses and Prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone s life. Thank you! He is completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All he is doing now is gaining weight-and making his mother uncomfortable with his size. But she's not worried now. In a short time, her baby will be born. She has planned to bring her baby home or to place her baby for adoption. Either way, she knows she can receive the assistance she needs from the Catholic Church and from the crisis pregnancy centers. Your baby's mother appreciates the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It hasn't been easy, but your prayers have given her grace to seek the help she needs. April 7 ~ Fifth Sunday of Lent In today s Gospel, Jesus is the model of compassion and kindness. He shows us how to be merciful and non-judgmental. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours His love, peace and mercy into our hearts and into the hearts of those suffering in poverty.
