MARRIAGE Arrangements should be made at least 6 months in advance and should be made prior to making plans for a reception. Call the Parish Center for an appointment with the priest or deacon you wish to witness your wedding. All couples are required to attend Pre-Cana. INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FAITH Those seeking information about the Catholic Faith are invited to contact the Parish Center concerning the R.C.I.A. Program. DEVOTIONS EUCHARISTIC ADORATION In the chapel, Monday through Friday at 3:00 p.m. and concluding with Benediction at 5:00 p.m. FIRST FRIDAY Mass is at 9:00a.m. Exposition of the Holy Eucharist takes place in the chapel from Fri. 5:00pm until Sat. 8:45 a.m. and concludes with Benediction. FIRST SATURDAY 8:15 a.m. devotions ANOINTING OF THE SICK - The Sacrament is available EVERY SATURDAY after the 9:00 a.m. Mass, the Sacrament is available for those who are to undergo a serious medical procedure the following week or who have a serious illness and who have not been anointed within the past three months. If you wish to be anointed, please let the celebrant know before Mass. MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA 5:15 pm in the chapel PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Holy Communion will be ministered to those confined at home. Those who are seriously ill should request a priest for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. PARISH REGISTRATION New families and new parishioners are encouraged to register at St. Matthew. 5 November 24th 2013 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 5 Dear friends, In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize that secularism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI s encyclical gave Catholics hope and while governments of men around them crumbled the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. In our own country the vicious and bloody persecutions of devout and practicing Catholics went largely unheeded and the unspeakable brutalities and atrocities of the Spanish Reds in the 30 s often went unremarked in a wave of popular domestic leftism and fashionable communism while every opposite brutality of the Nationalists was given mythic status. Pope Pius XI said that Christ reign[s] in the hearts of men, both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind. This courageous and now often forgotten Pope had the temerity to upbraid and condemn the pseudo-scientific racial theories of a Hitler and Nazism, the tawdry bullyboy cult of violence of Italian Fascism, as well as the dark brutality of Theophobic Soviet Communism. While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Basic Christian doctrines and mores are increasingly held as ridiculous and, indeed, hateful, even by supposedly mainstream conservative media outlets and voices. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick according to Catholic teaching. Soon we will come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

6 November 24th 2013 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 6 THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WISHES ALL OF OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES A BLESSED AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING LOOKING AHEAD When registering a new student, 1 st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11 :OOAM and 4:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child's Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of$ per child is due at that time. Today, Sunday, November 24,2013, the seventh grade WINTER AND SUMMER PRO- GRAM students will be attending the 9:30AM Family Mass. Classes are cancelled on Wednesday, November 27th and Thursday, 28th for the Thanksgiving holiday. Sunday, December 1,2013, the first Sunday of Advent, the eighth grade will be attending the 9:30AM Family Mass. Sunday, December 8, 2013, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and the first grade children will be attending the 9:30AM Family Mass. Sunday, December 15,2013, the second grade children will be attending the 9:30AM Family Mass. Sunday, December 22,2013, the third grade children will be attending the 9:30AM Family Mass. Classes are cancelled for the Christmas holidays from Monday, December 23 thru Wednesday, January 1, Classes resume on Thursday, January 2,2014. For those students attending grade level Masses on the various Sundays listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9: 10AM and remember your tithing envelopes as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to attend these Masses. SPECIAL NOTE On Wednesday, December 4, 2013, ALL 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and teachers will be attending a special Mission Mass at 4:30PM in the Church. It will start next week, the first week of Advent. Please make time for some or all of the events of the week? I received a wonderful phone call this week from The Life Center concerning the recent Baby Bottle Drive. Between the regular Mass goers and our CCD children over $10, 000 was raised in change and bills in those emblematic bottles. What a wonderful tribute to your generosity! You can see some of the work your gifts make possible at Father Hewes Dear Rosarians, Our Christmas party will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, 12:30 PM at Orlando s Restaurant. The cost is Twenty-three ($23.00) dollars. Please see one of the Board ladies to make payment and for further details. Kindly use this opportunity to pay your dues in the amount of Fifteen ($15.00) dollars. This year, we ask that you please bring a wrapped gift to our Christmas party. We will be donating our gifts to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in honor of John Gatto s dedication and tireless service to our parish. 13 November 24th 2013 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe 13 As I prepare to move on from St. Matthew's parish, I can't help but wonder about the various ministries I've been involved in here. We live in a very different age whereby we are finding fewer and fewer people volunteering. The reasons are varied...economics, health etc. To quote Fr. Frank Nelson, pastor of Maria Regina Church in Seaford, " many people equate Ministry with Volunteering. " Society would have us believe that all things are equal. This just isn't true...the Corporal works of mercy remind us that "just as God has given us the first and best, so we are to return to Him not the leftovers, not the 'extra' time, but the first and best of our time and talent. I believe we here at St. Matthew's have a dedicated group of ministers of compassionate care, consolation and bereavement. They serve during times of convenience as well as inconvenience. These ministers give their very best and persevere. My prayer is that these ministers will continue the fine service they give, called by Jesus to serve, with a continued spirit of joy and thanksgiving. My thanks to all of you! We also have a wonderful group for those 60+. Pat Benoit, Roberta Fredericks, Joan Rosato, Joan Burke and Rose McCormick are the "behind the scenes" people. These are the advisors to the moderator. During this time of thanks, in the name of all the members, we give a huge "THANK YOU" for all you do to make the YES group so enjoyable. Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you to save the life of, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in Your presence and in the sight of all. Amen Month Two Developing Baby Your baby is making progress developing all of his/her external features and internal organs. His/her brain is functioning at 40 days. His/her mother can hear his/her heartbeat now on an ultrasonic stethoscope. Milk-teeth buds are present at 6 ½ weeks. And it has been reported that a two-month old baby can suck his/her thumb. From this moment, your spiritually adopted baby grows and refines his/her body. But everything he/she needs to survive once he/she is born is already present by the end of the eighth week. NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE Sunday, December 8, p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Chapel On Sunday, December 8, 2013, our parish will participate in the National Night of Prayer for Life. The purpose is to unite our prayers with Catholics throughout the country in an effort to turn hearts towards Christ, thus bringing an end to abortion and the destruction it causes to all those involved. The hours are chosen to coincide with Our Lady of Guadalupe s appearance to Juan Diego. Each hour will include formal prayer as a group and silent meditation. 15 IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER The IRA charitable rollover was revived in the American Taxpayer Relief Act of What's called a rollover is actually a qualified charitable distribution" that can be made to St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church. Here's how to do it: 1. If you are at least 70 years old on the date you make your gift. 2. If your IRA is a traditional or Roth. 3. If you don't exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions. You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution." In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you'll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to St. Matthew's Church. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2013 directly to the Parish as a 2013 gift.
