5 October 21, 2018 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30AM Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone Fax maryccd@smrcc.org LOOKING AHEAD Some families still have not registered their child/children for the Winter Program which has already begun. We cannot place you child without the proper paperwork and it is never too late to register them. If you don t have the registration form, you can come into the Religion office and we will give you one. Applications cannot be processed if we don t have them and your first and second choice may become compromised. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office, on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 4:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $ per child is due at that time. For safety reasons, ALL students grades 1 thru 7, must be signed in and out by a parent or adult. Students in the 8th grade can be dropped off at the door by the Gym and come right upstairs to their classroom BUT MUST BE SIGNED OUT EACH WEEK BY A PARENT OR ADULT. Situations in the past have caused us to insist on the parent/adult sign out for these grades. This is for your child s safety and protection as well as ours, not to mention it is dark when the children are leaving the building and they do not always see or know where their parent has parked. GRADE LEVEL MASS FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, November 11, 2018, 3rd & 4th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. For those students attending their grade level Mass listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9:10AM and remember your tithing envelope as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to join us at this Mass. NOTES: Classes are cancelled on Wednesday, October 31st for Halloween and Thursday, November 1st for All Saints Day (Mass, Holy Day of Obligation). Wednesday, November 7, 2018 there will be a First Holy Communion Meeting at 7:00PM downstairs in Msgr. Goggin Hall. Parents of children making First Holy Communion in May 2019 are asked to attend. Students need not be there.

6 October 21, 2018 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 The times they are a changin If you re of my generation, you remember that line above as one of the iconic songs of the age. Whatever its merits as a song, it represents a handy lead in to some changes here in our schedule of Masses. We change the clocks back on the night of November 3 rd -4 th to Standard Time. Beginning Saturday, November 10 th the Saturday evening Mass will be celebrated at 4 PM instead of 5 PM from henceforth. This will allow you to arrive for Mass while it is still daylight and leave at dusk, rather than it being dark as the days get shorter. The Confession hour will be 3 PM to 4 PM. Scheduled weddings and other events will be unaffected by this change. As we approach Easter, this new schedule will be reevaluated as necessary. Also, beginning Tuesday, October 23 rd the Holy Hour for the Clergy after the 9 AM Mass will be conducted on TUESDAY MORNINGS FROM NOW ON. Father Hewes As stated above, beginning Tuesday, October 23rd and continuing each Tuesday until further notice, the Holy Hour for the Clergy and the Purification of the Church will be held in the church immediately after the 9:00 AM Mass. The Rosary will be prayed before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance and other prayers will be offered in reparation for sins and for the healing of the victims of sin. About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy: The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a full Mass it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Communion after a proper spiritual preparation. The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, readings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above. PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday.

October 21, 2018 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time 9 Although the Church prays every day for those who have died, the month of November has been dedicated to praying for the deceased. At the 6:30 PM Mass on Tuesday, November 6th, we will read the names of your loved ones from St. Matthew s who have died this year. Let us also pray for their families and friends who mourn their loss. I have sent a letter with a special invitation to every family whose loved one had their Funeral Mass here at St. Matthew. However, everyone is certainly invited and encouraged to attend this Mass, as we commend all of those who predeceased us to God s loving care. I look forward to seeing you. Thank you and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy October 21 - Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples: Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you give hope to your neighbors who have nothing. CLOTHING NEEDED We have 2 girls who need clothing. One is size 3T and the other is size 6. New is nice but the clothing doesn t have to be new. However, the clothing must be clean and in good condition. All types of clothing including pajamas are needed. Focus on the Family originally developed this campaign in 2014 to bring attention to the many challenges to these freedoms that too often take place in public schools. Families could receive a free study guide to assist students from elementary grades to college as they talk to their friends during noninstructional times before & after school, lunch and recreation. "They voluntarily bring their Bibles to school as a visual celebration of their religious freedom and start conversations with other students," said a Focus on the Family facilitator. "It's about conversation, not confrontation. An event like this doesn't create any new right; it's already there." Dr. Ben Carson, HUD, Sued Over White House Bible Study The Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and Secretary Ben Carson, are being sued by an atheist group for records relating to a White House Bible Study group that is attended by 10 Cabinet members each week - although, as busy people, not everyone is able to attend every week. Meetings last between minutes and members are free to contact the teacher, former pro-basketball player, Pastor Ralph Drollinger. "First of all, taxpayer funds are not used to support the ministry... And secondly, no staff are involved in the Bible study," said Sec. Carson. "One of the principles of our nation's founding is freedom of religion...in fact, it is my faith that helps me serve the nation better." Pastor Drollinger developed Capital Ministries, a Bible studies program, that is now in 43 state capitals. In 2010, he brought this ministry to Washington, first to 50 members in the House of Representatives and then to the Senate in (bbc.com, 4/8/18; frcaction.org, 1/30/18; focusonthefamily.com; bringyourbible.org; huffingtonpost.com, 10/16/14) "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education." President Theodore Roosevelt
