5 March 26th, 2017 The Fourth Sunday of Lent 5 Dear Friends, In the official prayer book of the Church, known as The Liturgy of the Hours or The Breviary, there occurs in this liturgical season an ancient Latin hymn used at Lauds or Morning Prayer in which this line appears: Dies venit, dies tua, In qua reflorent omnia (A day is coming, Thy day, In which all things shall flourish anew...) That day is Easter, now only three weeks away. This past week, spring seems to have peeped through the curtain of a harsh and relentless winter and for most of us there was a natural lightening of spirit. This lightening is graphically demonstrated by the semi-annual return of rose or pink Mass vestments on this Sunday traditionally known as Laetare Sunday. Like its equivalent in the little Lent of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, it tells us that we are halfway to that Dies quam fecit Dominus That day which the Lord has made. This can be a day of anticipation and joy, and/or a renewal of our Lenten resolutions either faithfully or poorly kept. Laetare means in Latin be joyful not so much that the self-denial of Lent is half-over (though that can be a motive too) but that The Day is coming in which all things will flourish anew. Our English word Lent derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for Spring; and it is at hand. Laetare! Also last week, the Sacrament of Confirmation was conferred upon 250 of our young people by Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski. We think with gratitude of all those who serve this parish and its children in our large and extremely busy Religious Education Program: our Religious Education staff, Mary Donaldson and Rita Minder; Carmela Sposato, all the catechists, aids and clerical help. God s blessings on them and upon you all! Father Hewes Lenten Devotions Mondays: Holy Hour and Miraculous Medal Novena with Benediction 4 to 5 PM in the Chapel. Wednesdays: Holy Hour 4 to 5 PM in the Chapel. Confession available. Fridays: Stations of the Cross 7 PM in the Church.

8 March 26th, 2017 The Fourth Sunday of Lent 8 Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day. Pope Francis Dear Friends, During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2017 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish Pledge: $ Name Address Down payment: $ City, State, Zip: Phone: Signature: Date: St Matthew Catholic Ministry Appeal 2017 Goal: $116, Pledges: $79, Donors: 203 Many thanks for your generosity, caring and sharing. I don't know about you but I've just about had it with winter. Some reminders: Regular meetings for the rest of March. April 6th Sister Ave Clark April 13 NO MEETING HOLY THURSDAY April 20 Lunch at Picollo Mundo April 27 Regular meeting On April 15, Holy Saturday, we will have what has become a tradition here at St. Matthew with the blessing of the Easter food. This centuries old custom is richly symbolic and beautiful, and one in which the family can participate. I have seen beautiful arrangements, some on plates or baskets that have been passed down thru generations, others in plain grocery sacks. The presentation is not what is important, your presence is. Teach your children and grandchildren that Easter is not all jelly beans and chocolate bunnies. That's fun, but they must know the true meaning of the day. So bring them with those pretty baskets of candy and eggs to be placed on the altar for the blessing. Father Sikorski does a brief prayer service, and then patiently poses for pictures with the children. It s all of 20 or 30 minutes, so no matter how busy your day is I m sure you can spare a few to carryon this lovely tradition. Remember to pray for all who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray also for those who protect us and our country. God Bless America. See you in church, Pat

16 March 26th, 2017 The Fourth Sunday of Lent 16 Catholics For Freedom of Religion If lay people don't love their... faith enough to struggle for it in the public square, nothing the (religious leaders) do will finally matter." Archbishop Chaput, Archdiocese of Philadelphia Facts About Religious Rights in the Workplace: Lack of awareness of religious liberty in the workplace has led to violations of the lawful rights of citizens who merely want to peacefully live out their religious beliefs as they earn a living. Attorneys at law firm, First Liberty, have compiled the following facts: 1. The Supreme Court recognized, in 2014, that all Americans, including business owners, have freedom of conscience rights to live and work according to their beliefs without the fear of government compelling them to violate their beliefs. 2. Employers cannot discriminate on the basis of religion and have an affirmative duty to accommodate an employee's religious practices in the workplace, unless this practice imposes undue hardship on the employer. 3. Employers may run their businesses in accordance with their religious beliefs. An employer does not discriminate on the basis of religion by affirming the faith of its owners in business objectives. However, the employer may not give the perception that employees' should acquiesce to these religious beliefs. 4. Employers and employees may engage in religious speech in the workplace. Both may not engage in uninvited proselytizing. As with spoken religious speech, employers can share their religious beliefs with their employees in print form such as pamphlets, books, and newsletters. 5. Employers and employees may have prayer meetings and bible studies in the workplace as long it is clear attendance is voluntary and not required. 6. Employers may have employee training based on bible principles. However, employees cannot be required to undergo religious training, services, activities, or engage in behavior that would violate their own sincerely-held religious beliefs.
