4 November 29, 2015 The First Sunday of Advent 4 The St. Vincent de Paul Society s Angel Tree is located in the back of the church. Please consider taking an ornament from the tree. It will have the information needed in order to choose an appropriate gift. You will be making someone s Christmas a little brighter this year. Please return the ornament attached to a wrapped present no later than Dec. 13th. Returning the gift sooner would be appreciated. It would be a great help if you return the paper ornament completely filled out and attached to the wrapped present. If you are donating a gift certificate, please put the gift certificate inside the special gift certificate box under the tree. The St. Matthew Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank you for helping make this year s Friends of the Poor Walk a success. We raised $1,634 due to your generosity. All of these proceeds will be used within our parish.

5 Dear friends, November 29, 2015 The First Sunday of Advent 5 Today we begin a new Church (or Liturgical) Year with the First Sunday of Advent. From this Sunday all through till Pentecost next year the Church takes us through her Liturgy from the preparation of the Messiah s Birth to the glorious consummation of His Paschal Mystery. The Season of Advent also is a special time of spiritual preparation for Christmas. In former days it had the character of a little Lent (only 4 Sundays as opposed to 5 weeks): a season of fasting and gift giving preparing the soul for Christmas as we do for Easter. It was also a time that included the ancient penitential Winter Ember Days and the great Vigils of the Immaculate Conception and of Christmas Eve where Catholics used to observe fasting and abstinence from meat. The only remnant of that now is the purple color of the vestments and of the Advent Candles (lightened on the Third or Gaudete Sunday of Advent by the use of rose vestments.) The name Advent is the Latin for coming. We remember three advents of the Lord: The first coming of the Lord in history, as the Child of Bethlehem The second coming at the end of time to judge the living and the dead as we say in the Creed, and The middle, or daily, coming of the Lord in His Word, Sacraments, and daily graces and opportunities to serve Him in those around us. The Advent Wreath has 4 colored candles, symbolizing the traditional 4000 years that is said to have elapsed from the creation of Adam to the birth of Christ. The violet color is a reminder that Advent, though not really a pre-christmas Lent, is a time perhaps of serious reflection and straightening out our lives, if need be, to worthily celebrate Christmas. The Lord is near we often hear in Advent, indeed He is! Everyday, He is near. Let us all try to live with that thought in our minds and hearts not only now, but every day of our lives. God s blessings, Fr. Hewes The Colors of Advent Historically, the primary sanctuary color of Advent is Purple. This is the color of penitence and fasting as well as the color of royalty to welcome the Advent of the King. Purple is used in Catholic churches. The purple of Advent is also the color of suffering used during Lent and Holy Week. This points to an important connection between Jesus birth and death. The Nativity, the Incarnation, cannot be separated from the Crucifixion. The purpose of Jesus coming into the world, of the "Word made flesh" and dwelling among us, is to reveal God and His grace to the world through Jesus life and teaching, but also through his suffering, death, and resurrection. To reflect this emphasis, originally Advent was a time of penitence and fasting, much as the Season of Lent and so shared the color of Lent. In the four weeks of Advent the third Sunday came to be a time of rejoicing that the fasting was almost over (in some traditions it is called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word for "rejoice"). The shift from the purple of the Season to pink or rose for the third Sunday Advent candles reflected this lessening emphasis on penitence as attention turned more to celebration of the season. In recent times, however, Advent has undergone a shift in emphasis, reflected in a change of colors used in many churches. Except in the Eastern churches, the penitential aspect of the Season has been almost totally replaced by an emphasis on hope and anticipation. In many churches the third Sunday remains the Sunday of Joy marked by pink or rose.

I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. December Universal: That all may experience the mercy of God, who never tires of forgiving. 11 November 29, 2015 The First Sunday of Advent 11 Catholics For Freedom of Religion Thanksgiving Proclamation "Whereas it is the duty of Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God... whereas both Houses of Congress... requested a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God... I do assign Thursday the 26th day of November next... to the service of that great and glorious Being..." George Washington Coach Suspended for "Religious Conduct": A Washington State H.S. football coach is suspended from his job for offering a lawful, private, personal prayer of thanks at the 50-yard line after every game since 2008 without drawing any complaints. Coach Joe Kennedy, a Marine veteran, will silently "take-a-knee" after shaking hands with the opposing coaches and is sometimes joined by students and game attendees. Coach Kennedy was told by Bremerton H.S. officials that he could pray after games under one condition: that it wouldn't be "observable to students or the public." Teachers, coaches, administrators - or public employees of any kind - don't lose their religious freedom when they step on school property. Insisting otherwise is a violation of their civil rights. "No reasonable observer could conclude that a football coach who waits until the game is over, and the players have left the field, and walks to mid-field to say a short, private, personal prayer, is speaking on behalf of the state. Quite the opposite... to ban or prohibit Coach Kennedy - or any private citizen - praying, violates the First Amendment," said Liberty Institute attorneys. "Among the most basic rights that Americans enjoy are the free exercise of religion, free speech, and the freedom of association." (libertyinstitute.org, 10/27/15; cbsnews.com, 10/30/15) "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing."
