7 January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy: The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a full Mass, it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Communion after a proper spiritual preparation. The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, readings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above. PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday. A NOTE ABOUT WINTER WEATHER In the weeks to come, while we try to manage snow and ice removal as best as our own resources, as well as those of a professional company can provide; we simply cannot guarantee that the entirety of the parking lot and sidewalks will be dry and free of any risk under any and all circumstances in winter weather. Please use prudence and caution when the conditions are snowy or icy. It is better to stay home in bad conditions, or to come to a later Mass, rather than risk injury. Father Hewes My Dear Parishioners, Daniela Conte is a brave, adorable, 7-year-old girl who has been suffering with cancer. She hopes to make her First Holy Communion next year. Please pray for her and for her wonderful family. Her mother has written about her in the message below. There is a Gofundme account to which you can donate. I know that we can count on your generosity and prayers. Thank you and God bless you., Sr. Kay McCarthy **************************************************************************************************************** Daniela Conte is a vibrant 7-year-old girl who continues her battle with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is a relatively common muscle and soft tissue pediatric cancer. What makes Daniela s case extremely rare is that it's in her liver. There are only a few cases of this documented and almost none of them are in children. Upon starting kindergarten, Daniela was first diagnosed at the age of 5 and started chemotherapy immediately. Sadly, the first year of chemotherapy didn't kill it all and now she has started another year of chemotherapy, coupled with radiation therapy and immunotherapy. Insurance does not cover all the medical costs. Daniela is also the oldest of 4 children. Her mother, Katia cares for Daniela full time while her father, Anthony works to support his family. Daniela began a new cycle of five different chemotherapy drugs. The first one was about two months ago. It was rough and it hospitalized her for about a month, but it looks as if the cancer is shrinking. The second round was a few weeks ago and didn't wipe her out that much. She has recovered from that last one and is headed back to the hospital soon. Surgery is still not an option because the main tumor is inoperable. Her doctors have discussed the possibility of immunotherapy. There has been much headway in this field. What is available now was not around two years ago when Daniela was first diagnosed. So they may decide to utilize two new immunotherapy drugs, if the chemo can t kill it all. Her doctors are just concerned because there is limited data about these new medications. Overall, Daniela's spirits have been high. She feels good and will possibly go to school a few days this month or next month. She had a great time for Halloween. She dressed up and trick -or -treated with a lot of her friends. We'll post another update on Daniela s Go Fund Me account once we get the results of her next scans. Thank you all again for your love and support. Sincerely, The Conte Family Donations can be sent to: Gofundme Account or to Mrs. Katia Conte, PO Box 1192, Melville, New York 11747

MATTHEW S PARISH OUTREACH On behalf of the many, many families for whom you donated presents and gifts cards this Christmas, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your great generosity and kindness made God s love very real for these families, some of whom are in dire need. In his encyclical, The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis tells us that each individual Christian and every community is called to be an instrument for the promotion of the poor. This demands that we be attentive to the cry of the poor and come to their aid. May God bless you for coming to their aid. At this time we need the following food: Cereal Tuna fish Coffee and Tea Canned ravioli and spaghettios Canned fruit Tomato sauce Soup Macaroni and Cheese ================================ Dear Parishioners, The sound system in our Church is very good. However, if you are hearing impaired, you may be missing out on God s Word. If so, we are trying to determine if you think it would be beneficial for you to use hearing assistive technology during Mass. If you are interested, please complete the form below and return it to me by Feb. 18 th. This information is necessary, as we will only make this investment if we know that these devices are needed and will be used. The Parish will pay the cost of installing the system. However, because of hygiene and sanitary reasons, we would ask you to purchase your own personal device ~ a head set and receiver, which costs $190. Once you purchase it, you will bring it with you every time you come to Mass. Name Address Phone Thank you and God bless you, Sr. Kay McCarthy

What s a cemetery doing at St. Matthew s? This weekend you will see 100 white crosses erected in front of St. Matthew s Church. These crosses represent the Cemetery of the Innocents. Each cross represents 41 abortions performed each year in Suffolk County alone. There are more than 4000 reported abortions/year in Suffolk County; more than 93,000 reported abortions/year in New York State; and over 600,000 reported abortions/year in the U.S. Since Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion across the U.S. on January 22, 1973, the lives of 60 million unborn children have been destroyed. This display is intended to bring awareness to the number of abortions happening in our midst in Suffolk County. It is also an opportunity to bring hope and healing by highlighting resources that offer pregnancy support and post-abortive counseling such as: Life Center of LI: (631) , or Project Rachel: 1(888)456-HOPE, Please see the Respect Life table after all Sunday Masses this weekend for more information. When you pass the Cemetery of the Innocents, please say a prayer for all the babies who have died because of abortion. 12 January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 12 Important Information for SNAP Recipients about your February Benefits Because of the federal shutdown, most SNAP recipients will receive their February Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits early. If you received a SNAP benefit in January and were scheduled to receive SNAP in February, your February benefits may be available on your EBT card on January 17th instead of on your scheduled February availability date. This is your entire February benefit. This is not an extra SNAP benefit for January. You will not get any more benefits in February. So, it is important that you budget and spend your February benefit with that in mind. If you completed your recertification for SNAP benefits in January and do not receive your February benefit on January 17th, this does not mean that you will not get a February benefit. Your February benefit should be available on February 1. Currently, nothing else about SNAP has changed due to the federal government shutdown. All program requirements remain in place. If you get a recertification notice and application, or a periodic report form, please complete it and return it to your Department of Social Services (DSS) promptly so you may continue to receive SNAP benefits in the future. Your requirement to report changes to your DSS has also not changed. We will continue to provide up-to-date information about how the federal shutdown may impact your SNAP benefits on the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance website at The website also includes some frequently asked questions and answers about the shutdown Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics for Freedom of Religion "We must never adjust ourselves to religious bigotry." Martin Luther King Jr. How to Crush Religious Freedom: Anti-Catholic Bigotry: Some Senators assailed U.S. district court nominee, Brian Buescher, for his membership in the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic charitable organization, suggesting this affiliation might disqualify him for judgeship. The questions asked seemed to be a religious litmus test, since the positions under examination are held and taught by the Catholic Church itself and are not unique to the Knights of Columbus. "The sheer ignorance, not to mention injustice, in the senators' describing the K of C as 'extreme' would be baffling - if it weren't part of a pattern of bigoted thinking already sanctified by other senators... in (their) vulgar 2017 grilling of now-judge Amy Coney Barrett ("The dogma lives loudly within you, and that's a concern')," wrote Archbishop Chaput, PA. "We were extremely disappointed to see that one's commitment to Catholic principles through membership in the Knights of Columbus - a charitable organization that adheres to and promotes Catholic teachings - would be viewed as a disqualifier from public service in this day and age," said a spokesperson for the Knights. Rev. Eugene Rivers, an African-American Pentecostal minister, decried the "anti-catholic bigotry" shown by the senators. "As a leader of black Christians, I feel particularly strongly about the Knights of Columbus. For more than a century they bravely defended minorities. If Catholics like the Knights can be targeted, what should members of my Pentecostal church expect? "We share traditional views on abortion and marriage. What about Orthodox Jews, Muslims, Mormons and evangelical Christians? Even the Rev. Martin Luther King's biblical beliefs would be anathema to (these senators). "It's ugly, it's vindictive, and it damages all of us," said Archbishop Chaput about these hostile attacks on religious faith among the nation's leading legislators. (en-volve.com, 12/23/18; dailysignal.com, 1/10/19: washingtontimes.com, 12/30/18) "We must never remain silent in the face of bigotry. We must condemn those who seek to divide us."
