5 October 9th, 2016 The Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Dear Friends, Many thanks for your kindness and patience in receiving my talk at all the Masses last weekend. I even found some triangles in the collection on Monday morning! Fr. Hewes This and That Last week this space dealt with sacramental matters exclusively. This week we ll mention very practical matters. The Parish Center has several entrances. The one marked Main Entrance (between the shrines to Sts. Padre Pio and Mother Teresa ) is the public entrance. The Gym Entrance is usually kept closed and a sign directing one to the Main Entrance is posted at its approach. We do this so one may be met by a receptionist and directed properly to whatever person or service one may want. ALL parish, pastoral and other business and meetings are held in the Parish Center exclusively. I am grateful to the memory of Monsignor Mattei in providing such a useful and impressive building for our everyday needs. I occasionally hear that someone has been trying to reach me. Other than perhaps when I am away or a possible mishandling of the matter by a staff member, all one has to do is to call the Parish Office and ask to speak to me. Either I will answer the phone directly or my voice mail will take a message for you.( If however, one does not, and there are some, who for one reason or other will NOT leave a message there is nothing I can do to respond to you. ) While there are a growing number of Walk-In medical clinics, in terms of the parish it is not a good idea if one wants quality time or a serious conversation with a priest to simply present oneself at the Parish Center. It is quite possible that we will have other things we are attending to; or are not in the Parish Office at that time. It is a good idea to always call ahead and ask for an appointment. Actual Sick Call/Last Rites situations are dealt with as soon as Father Sikorski and I can respond. The receptionist or the after-hours voice mail will direct you in that case. There are many meetings and groups that take place or use the Monsignor Mattei Parish Center all through the year. Obviously it is crucial that this usage be coordinated and prioritized to avoid conflicts or confusion. Requests to use rooms, the Chapel, or the church must be made to the Parish Office before such events can occur and then only after the Pastor s approval. Father Hewes

6 October 9th, 2016 The Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone Fax maryccd@smrcc.org. LOOKING AHEAD Many families still have not registered their child/children for the Winter Program which has already begun. We cannot place your child without the proper paperwork and it is never too late to register them. If you don t have the bright pink registration form, you can come into the Religion office and we will give you one. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 4:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $ per child is due at that time. For safety reasons, ALL students, grades 1 thru 6, must be signed in and out by a parent or adult. Students in the 7th and 8th grades can be dropped off at the door by the Gym and come right upstairs to their classrooms BUT MUST BE SIGNED OUT EACH WEEK BY A PARENT OR ADULT. Situations in the past have caused us to insist on parent/adult sign out for these grades. This is for your child s safety and protection as well as ours, not to mention it is dark when the children are leaving the building and they do not always see or know where their parent has parked. GRADE LEVEL MASSES FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, October 9, 2016, 3rd & 4th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 16, 2016, 5th & 6th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 23, 2016, 7th & 8th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 30, 2016, 1st & 2nd grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Theses Masses do include all the Summer Program students as well. For those students attending grade level Masses listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9:10AM and remember your tithing envelopes as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to join us at these Masses. PLEASE NOTE: Classes are cancelled both in the schools and here in Religious Education on Monday, October 10th for Columbus Day and on Wednesday, October 12th for Yom Kippur.

8 October 9th, 2016 The Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 8 Dear Friends, A pastor s role includes the management and care of a parish s finances and material needs and possessions. I am happy to report that the temporal state of the parish is good, and we are in the black. We need to stay there and I do everything I can to keep it that way. However, I remember one of my own pastors remarking about parish finances: All our income is voluntary, and all our expenses are mandatory. The essential component of a parish s income is the regular weekly and holyday collections. That depends entirely on you, and your contribution on a regular basis to the parish. I am laying before you an increased giving appeal called Take-A-Step. No whizz-bangs or fancy brochures, just your own generosity and your willingness to take a step and a simple card to put in the collection basket. A sample card is printed below this week and others are in the pews next weekend. It s very easy: If you regularly give a $ 1 bill, add another. Almost everyone can do that and it will make a difference! If you regularly give a $ 5 bill or check, make it $10. If you regularly give a $10 bill or check, make it $20. OR if this increase is too much, please be as generous as you can. You can also do it all safe and securely online. It need not be a massive increase, but a small Step up spread out over a year adds up to a lot when joined with your fellow parishioners. Thank you for all your kindness and generosity now and in the past. As ever, God s blessings! Father Hewes

10 October 9th, 2016 The Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 10 NOVEMBER 2 ND, ALL SOULS DAY, 7 PM MASS As you know, Father Hewes possesses a vast knowledge of Church History. He told us a true story about St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine; while she was travelling with Augustine and her other son, she became very ill. Her sons told her not to worry as they would be home soon. However, Monica, knowing that she was dying, told them not to be concerned where to lay her body. Her only concern was that they always pray for and remember her at the Altar. That s what we will be doing here on Nov. 2 nd at the 7 PM Mass, praying and remembering our deceased loved ones at the Altar. While the Church throughout the world prays every day for those who have died, November 2 nd, All Souls Day, is a special day of prayer for those who have died. Father Hewes will be celebrating Mass at 7PM that evening. During the Mass, we will read the names of those persons from St. Matthews who have died this year. I have sent a letter with a special invitation to every family whose loved one had their Funeral Mass at St. Matthew s. However, everyone is certainly invited and encouraged to attend this Mass. I also encourage you to pray not only for our beloved deceased but also for the consolation and strength of their families. May these families grieve as St. Paul tells us, not as having any hope but with faith in God s beautiful promise of eternal life. God bless you.
