5 March 6th 2016 The Fourth Sunday of Lent 5 Dear friends, In the official prayer-book of the Church, known as The Liturgy of the Hours or The Breviary there occurs in this liturgical season an ancient Latin hymn used at Lauds or Morning Prayer in which this line appears: Dies venit, dies tua, In qua reflorent omnia (A day is coming, Thy day, In which all things shall flourish anew...) That day is Easter, now only three weeks away. This past week Spring seems to have peeped through the curtain of a harsh and relentless Winter and for most of us there was a natural lightening of spirit. This lightening is graphically demonstrated by the semi-annual return of rose or pink Mass vestments on this Sunday traditionally known as Laetare Sunday. Like its equivalent in the little Lent of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, it tells us that we are halfway to that Dies quam fecit Dominus That day which the Lord has made. This can be a day of anticipation and joy, and/or a renewal of our Lenten resolutions either faithfully or poorly kept. Laetare means in Latin be joyful not so much that the self-denial of Lent is half-over (though that can be a motive too) but that The Day is coming in which all things will flourish anew. Our English word Lent derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for Spring; and it is at hand. Laetare! Also this Monday, March 7 th, Bishop Murphy will be administering the Sacrament of Confirmation to the 8 th graders of our Religious Education program and Holy Family Regional School children from St. Matthew s Parish. We think with gratitude of all those who serve this Parish and its children in our large and extremely busy Religious Education Program: our Religious Education staff Mary Donaldson and Rita Minder; all the catechists, aids and clerical help. God blessings on them and upon you all! Father Hewes

Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world missions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER: God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. March Universal: Families in Difficulty That families in need may receive the necessary support and that children may grow up in healthy and peaceful environments. Evangelization: Persecuted Christians That those Christians who, on account of their faith, are discriminated against or are being persecuted, may remain strong and faithful to the Gospel, thanks to the incessant prayer of the Church.

Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes. A big welcome back is extended to Father Sikorski. His surgery went well, but the recovery is very tough and painful. At our last week meeting, we had a speaker that warned us of the danger of Scams. Simply by being Seniors, some dishonest people regard us as prime bait for these deceptions, Because we are "Old" we are perceived as gullible. They assume that we have money and can be talked into almost anything. Some of us have fallen for their pitch, be it identity theft, phone scams, contributions and repairs that are paid for but never completed and in some cases, never started at all. Be aware, never answer your phone if it is a number that you don't recognize. Our March luncheon will be at the Irish Coffee Pub on 3/10. Nine years ago, Marge Przyborowski, a member of our group came to us with the suggestion that we celebrate 'The blessing of the Easter Food" This is a European tradition where food that will be served at the Easter dinner is brought to the church on Holy Saturday and placed at the altar for blessing. It is beautiful to see the variety not of just the food, but the presentation. There were whole hams, roasts, breads, vegetables, cakes, and butter in the shape of the paschal Iamb. Some came beautifully decorated, and others in simple paper sacks. Some brought the tablecloth that would be used at the Easter meal. Everything was there to receive the Lords blessing. Father Sikorski will be continuing this tradition.,with his very special touch. Each year, we have more people attending. After the ceremony, some families linger to exchange stories of how it was done back then,or how this or that was prepared. It was great to see the children introduced to their heritage, but more importantly, to know that Easter is the resurrection of Jesus, and is not just about chocolate bunnies and colored egg We hope to see you on Holy Saturday morning with your children and their baskets. There is no meeting on Holy Thursday.Remember to pray for those in need} for their loving caregivers} and especially for our police} fireman and the military. God bless America. See you in Church, Pat I sought to hear the voice of God} and climbed the topmost steeple. But God declared "Go down again" I dwell among the people. John Henry Newman

When you took a tag from the tree; you may have thought you were just purchasing a gift for someone in need. However, when you returned the gift it was more than just a gift in a nicely wrapped box. You were exhibiting love and compassion for someone you didn't know. We are indeed blessed to have parishioners who care so much for others. May God Bless you all! 15 March 6th 2016 The Fourth Sunday of Lent 15 ONE FAITH FAMILY One of the most important members of our family of faith are our priests the Fathers who are there for us day in and day out throughout our lives. Ordained in June of 2015, Fr. Sean Magaldi grew up in Williston Park where he attended Mass with his family at Saint Aidan Parish. It was in his junior year at Chaminade High School that he first started thinking about studying to be a priest. My goal is to get as many people to heaven as possible including myself to journey with the people of our Diocese in growing closer to Christ. Fr. Sean Magaldi The priesthood was something that I started thinking about in high school; throughout college it was in the back of my mind but I wasn t ready to take the next step to enter the seminary. After graduating from college, I started working as a Catholic Campus Minister at Hofstra University. Working with the students at Hofstra helped me realize that God was calling me to be a priest and I needed to enter the seminary. Father Magaldi currently serves as an Associate Pastor at St. Patrick in Smithtown where he shared his goals as a priest. Please consider donating to the Appeal and a difference in someone s life. Thank you!
