5 April 2, 2017 The Fifth Sunday of Lent 5 Dear Friends, This Sunday is the 5th Sunday in Lent. In the older calendar it was known as Passion Sunday marking a change in the Lenten Season. The last two weeks of Lent were known as Passiontide. It was and is a dramatic change: symbolized by the veiling of sacred images in the church. I vividly remember entering the lobby of the high school I attended, Saint Pius X Preparatory Seminary, and seeing the large statue of Our Lady that stood there veiled in purple cloth. Everywhere one looked, purple cloth sheathed all the familiar images of saints and angels. Even the very Crucifix was hidden from view. I think it was and is a very visible way of reminding us of the Passion. After a time of drastic pruning of the tree of the accumulated customs and practices of the Roman Rite, we see the Church asking us again to restore some of the old familiar customs. One of which is the ringing of bells at the elevation of the Host and Chalice at Mass. Those bells will fall silent on Holy Thursday, only to ring out again to proclaim the Resurrection. The familiar Holy Water is withdrawn from the fonts, to be replenished at Easter. Another of these customs is this striking and dramatic covering of all the sacred images in the church. The Scriptures speak of Jesus hiding Himself ; God hiding His face, and the Lord covered up in the tomb for 3 days. The Crucifix will be unveiled on Good Friday in answer to that ancient cry of the Liturgy, Behold the wood of the Cross! and will be the object of veneration on that day s Solemn Liturgy. On Holy Saturday, the great Vigil of Easter, the risen and glorified Christ will be revealed to us, much like to the disciples on that early morn; as well as the statues of Our Lady and Saint Joseph. Historians tell us that earliest drama in western civilization is not only the ancient Greek theatre but also the Liturgy of the Church. We are fed not only by words, but by signs and wonders that appeal to all our senses. Now the focus of Lent shifts from the theme of personal repentance to the Passion and Death of the Lord. Why this ancient, now restored, custom? The veiled images symbolize a world without God. Familiar faces and images, now hidden, remind us of what the world can be; and human lives can be, without God. Nowhere to look, nothing to look at...but emptiness. On Good Friday, the Liturgy finally returns the Crucifix to us unveiled with the cry Ecce!..Behold!..Look! Look at what it cost God to forgive our sins! Look at the price of sin! Look at the love He has for us! Centuries ago, the great and ardent light of medieval spirituality, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, preaching on the Passion, pointed to the Crucifix, and asked WHO did this??? He gave the answer: LOVE did this!!! Heedless of His dignity!!! These last two weeks of Lent are still different in our Liturgy. The theme of the Passion comes to the fore. Dear friend, we still have two weeks to make a good Lent: still time to voluntarily offer to Jesus a little bit of the Cross. Even if we have failed in our Lenten resolutions; there is still time to make it up! If we walk with Him in these last two weeks what an Easter we will have!!! God s blessings, Fr. Hewes On a purely personal note... As we begin the month of April, I would like to thank each and every person who congratulated me in any way last month on the Anniversary of my Ordination and birthday. Your kindness is, as always, deeply appreciated and truly exceptional.

8 April 2, 2017 The Fifth Sunday of Lent 8 Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day. Pope Francis Dear Friends, During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never contributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2017 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 programs and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with disabilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you! If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others! Make checks payable to: Catholic Ministries Appeal Parish Pledge: $ Name Address Down payment: $ City, State, Zip: Phone: Signature: Date: St Matthew Catholic Ministry Appeal 2017 Goal: $116, Pledges: $93, Donors: 241 Many thanks for your generosity, caring and sharing. 12 April 2, 2017 The Fifth Sunday of Lent 12 Lenten Devotions Mondays: Holy Hour and Miraculous Medal Novena with Benediction 4 to 5 PM in the Chapel. Wednesdays: Holy Hour 4 to 5 PM in the Chapel. Confession available. Fridays: Stations of the Cross 7 PM in the Church. St. John said, Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and in truth. Mother Teresa also spoke about love. She said that love is the reason that we exist to love and serve God by loving and serving one another. She called every action of hers something beautiful for God. You, our outstanding parishioners, have loved in deed and in truth. You have done so many beautiful things for God. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your love, tremendous generosity and kindness to me and to my Religious Community, the Sisters of St. Dominic in Amityville, to the impoverished children in an orphanage in Haiti and to the many struggling and poor families who come to us for assistance. Whenever I request something, you always respond overwhelmingly with open arms. Truly, you are an inspiration and an immeasurable blessing in my life and in the lives of so many people that you never even met. I echo the following words of St. Paul to the Phillipians. I thank my God whenever I think of you. Every time I pray for all of you, I pray with joy, remembering how you have helped to spread the Good News. I am quite certain that the One who began this good work in you will see that it is finished when the day of Christ Jesus comes. You have a permanent place in my heart. My prayer for you is that your love for one another will increase more and more. As we celebrate the beautiful feast of the Resurrection, may you and your families have a very happy and blessed Easter. Sister Kay McCarthy Here at Saint Matthew's, we have an amazing bereavement support group for young teens (12-18) who have lost a parent. The group runs for eight weeks with continuous support from the most caring young widows and widowers in our community. Roni Mosakowski, a child psychologist, Kim Brent, Robert Verdi and our parishioner Mark Berstein have volunteered their time week after week to help these children understand loss and grief. We also have a bereavement group for young widows and widowers from age facilitated by Arlene Ricca, Laure Kaminsky, Barbara Arabio and a 54 and younger group facilitated by Kathryn Monaco Douglas and Dee Antonucci. These groups have grown to amazing proportions as word of mouth has spread through Long Island, with participants from Queens to Riverhead. What makes us different from other bereavement groups is that our groups are continuous, giving compassion at all levels. There is also a Chat and Connect group facilitated by Nina Padovano for young widows and widowers who have past the bereavement stage but still have persistent issues that others might not understand. Plus a private face book group of 493 members all reaching out at all hours of the day and night. On June 4th at Belmont Lake at 10:00 a.m., we will have a fundraiser walk. This is our tenth walk to help our widows/ widowers who have financial hardships. All this has been made possible due to the kindness and understanding of Sr. Kay McCarthy and Father Hewes, the pastor of St. Matthew s. If you or anyone that you know are aware of someone who may benefit from these services, please contact Kathryn Monaco Douglas

This centuries old custom is richly symbolic and beautiful, and one in which the family can participate. I have seen beautiful arrangements, some on plates or baskets that have been passed down thru generations, others in plain grocery bags. The presentation is not what is important, your presence is. Teach your children and grandchildren that Easter is not all jelly beans and chocolate bunnies. That's fun, but they must know the true meaning of the day. So bring them with those pretty baskets of candy and eggs to be placed on the altar for the blessing. Father Sikorski does a brief prayer service and then patiently poses for pictures with the children. It s all of 20 or 30 minutes, so no matter how busy your day is I m sure you can spare a few to carryon this lovely tradition. Remember to pray for all who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray also for those who protect us and our country. God Bless America. See you in church, Pat
