5 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Dear Friends, The turn of the month from September to October gives us, in the Calendar of the Church the Feasts of the Archangels on September 29 th and the Guardian Angels on October 2 nd. I offer this excerpt from The Catechism of the Catholic Church for your reflection and prayers. Father Hewes THE ANGELS The existence of angels - a truth of faith 328 The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition. Who are they? 329 St. Augustine says: "'Angel' is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is 'spirit'; if you seek the name of their office, it is 'angel': from what they are, 'spirit', from what they do, 'angel.'" 188 With their whole beings the angels are servants and messengers of God. Because they "always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven" they are the "mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word" As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendor of their glory bears witness. 190 Christ "with all his angels" 331 Christ is the center of the angelic world. They are his angels: "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him.. " 191 They belong to him because they were created through and for him: "for in him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities - all things were created through him and for him." 192 They belong to him still more because he has made them messengers of his saving plan: "Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?" Angels have been present since creation and throughout the history of salvation, announcing this salvation from afar or near and serving the accomplishment of the divine plan: they closed the earthly paradise; protected Lot; saved Hagar and her child; stayed Abraham's hand; communicated the law by their ministry; led the People of God; announced births and callings; and assisted the prophets, just to cite a few examples. 194 Finally, the angel Gabriel announced the birth of the Precursor and that of Jesus himself From the Incarnation to the Ascension, the life of the Word incarnate is surrounded by the adoration and service of angels. When God "brings the firstborn into the world, he says: 'Let all God's angels worship him.'" 196 Their song of praise at the birth of Christ has not ceased resounding in the Church's praise: "Glory to God in the highest!" 197 They protect Jesus in his infancy, serve him in the desert, strengthen him in his agony in the garden, when he could have been saved by them from the hands of his enemies as Israel had been. 198 Again, it is the angels who "evangelize" by proclaiming the Good News of Christ's Incarnation and Resurrection. 199 They will be present at Christ's return, which they will announce, to serve at his judgement. 200 The angels in the life of the Church 334 In the meantime, the whole life of the Church benefits from the mysterious and powerful help of angels In her liturgy, the Church joins with the angels to adore the thrice-holy God. She invokes their assistance (in the funeral liturgy's In Paradisum deducant te angeli...["may the angels lead you into Paradise..."]). Moreover, in the "Cherubic Hymn" of the Byzantine Liturgy, she celebrates the memory of certain angels more particularly (St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael, and the guardian angels). 336 From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. 202 "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life." 203 Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

6 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30AM Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone Fax maryccd@smrcc.org LOOKING AHEAD Many families still have not registered their child/children for the Winter Program which begins this week. We cannot place you child without the proper paperwork and it is never too late to register them. If you don t have the registration form, you can come into the Religion office and we will give you one. Applications cannot be processed if we don t have them and your first and second choice may become compromised. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office, on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 4:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $ per child is due at that time. For safety reasons, ALL students grades 1 thru 7, must be signed in and out by a parent or adult. Students in the 8th grade can be dropped off at the door by the Gym and come right upstairs to their classroom BUT MUST BE SIGNED OUT EACH WEEK BY A PARENT OR ADULT. Situations in the past have caused us to insist on the parent/adult sign out for these grades. This is for your child s safety and protection as well as ours, not to mention it is dark when the children are leaving the building and they do not always see or know where their parent has parked. GRADE LEVEL MASS FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, October 14, 2018, 1st & 2nd grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. For those students attending their grade level Mass listed above, please sit in the front of the Church, try to arrive by 9:10AM and remember your tithing envelope as they are not only used for a donation but also for taking attendance. All family members are invited to join us at this Mass. NOTE: Classes are cancelled on Monday, October 8th, for Columbus Day.

About The Types of Catholic Wedding Ceremonies There are two forms of our Catholic wedding Liturgy: The Wedding or Nuptial Mass: Often referred to as a full Mass it is the celebration of the Mass with the wedding ceremony inserted in the middle of the Liturgy. It presupposes both parties are practicing Catholics and receiving Holy Communion after a proper spiritual preparation. The Wedding Ceremony: This has all the elements of the above (music, readings, vows, etc.) but without the celebration of Mass. This form is suitable for general congregations and is of shorter duration than the above. PLEASE NOTE: Nuptial Masses are NOT celebrated on Sundays. The ONLY exception is when a visiting priest is invited by the family, approved by the Pastor and is willing to offer a Nuptial Mass on Sunday. September 30 - Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s gospel Jesus tells his disciples: Anyone who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward. On September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are on the front line in laboring for the poor, they are among the first to know their real needs. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing assistance for food, utilities, rent and other bills. God Bless You!

9 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 9 Y.E.S. ~ SENIOR NEWS: And a good time was had by all. Anyone who has ever had the good fortune to spend time at Woodloch Pines knows that nothing, including not so great weather, can stop you from having a great time at this family resort. We made it a point, before we left for the trip, to not let things that we cannot control get in the way of having a great time and that is exactly what we did. All you had to do is think about the people in the Carolinas to realize how lucky we were to be where we were. We came home with more good memories to add to those we already had. Meetings are held every Thursday after the 9:00 a.m. Mass except on luncheon dates. Please join us. All are welcome. See you at our next regular meeting on September 27th and bring a friend. Dates to Remember October 4 Regular Meeting October 11 Our first luncheon of the year will be at the Village Lanterne German Restaurant in Lindenhurst at 12:00 PM. Are you tired of Jakes 58 yet? Several of you have asked if we will have a casino road trip. If there is enough interest, I will try again, sometime in November, to whichever casino is giving the best give backs. In the past, it s been Bethlehem but another casino has opened upstate. Watch the bulletin for further details. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for our country, the military, first responders and for all those who keep us and our country safe. God Bless America. See you in Church, Pat. 15 September 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 15 RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Matthew s has renewed the Spiritual Adoption Program this month. The members of St. Matthew s parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 3,600 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to adopt. You may adopt a child individually or as a family. Even though you will not know the baby for whom you will be praying, you will be asked to name the child, thereby giving the baby the humanity he or she deserves. You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of prayer is great. You will receive monthly reports through the parish bulletin describing your baby s development. Posters at the Respect Life Bulletin Board in the breezeway will also update you on the monthly progress of your child whose date of birth we will celebrate the last weekend of June 23, Keep track of the size, too, with the ruler on the right edge of the posters! Best of all, it s free -- the only commitment requested is a short daily prayer! There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God has given you? For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions on the Respect Life bulletin board in the breezeway or call Lisa at RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program DAY ONE Developing Baby At the moment the father s sperm and mother s egg unite, a new and unrepeatable human being comes into existence, complete with his own unique set of DNA. Although he is only one cell, everything about this little person is already present: color of eyes, blood type, the height he will grow to be, color of hair everything! He will play a role in his family and his community a role only he can play! Nothing is added after conception to make him a complete human being. He already exists; all he needs is nourishment, a safe, warm environment, and most of all love. His parents don t even know he exists yet. Pray for them to safely bring their baby to birth so he can fulfill the mission God has for him. Spiritual Adoption Prayer Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you to save the life of, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in Your presence and in the sight of all. Amen

Anti-Semitic incidents happened in every state with close to 2,000 cases of harassment, vandalism and physical assault being recorded. States with the most incidents were NY, CA, NJ, MA, FL, and PA. Rabbi Andrew Baker, AJC director of International Jewish Affairs, testified before Congress on Nov.7, 2017, that colleges actively promoting boycotts of the Jewish state are fostering an unfavorable environment to Jews. In Europe, according to the 2017 Pew Research Report, the increasing population of refugees and immigrants to Europe in recent years is becoming a significant factor for Jewish communities. The report says more than 50% of refugees to Western Europe hold ant-semitic views. Sweden: Synagogues are often targeted with Molotov cocktails and there have been anti-semitic demonstrations and physical assaults against Sweden's 18,000 Jews. Hungary: The 100,000 Jewish community has experienced assaults and a political atmosphere with billboards and posters that cause concern. Russia: Following a tragic fire at a shopping mall in Siberia that killed 64 people, anti-semitic posts appeared on Russian social media suggesting Jews were responsible and murdered the victims to get blood for Passover matzah. Iceland & Denmark: The right to circumcise newborn Jewish boys is under threat. Iceland has a circumcision ban and Denmark, home to 6,000 Jews, has a petition in parliament to do the same.
