The Sacrament is available for those who are to undergo a serious medical procedure the following week or who have a serious illness and who have not been anointed within the past three months. If you wish to be anointed, please let the celebrant know before Mass. MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA Monday 5:00 pm in the chapel PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK Holy Communion will be ministered to those confined at home. 5 April 17, 2016 The Fourth Sunday of Easter 5 Dear friends, Sometimes I sit before the PC and just don t know what to write. Thank God, over the years friends and correspondents send me stories and sayings that I keep in a file I ve labeled Words to live by. Here, on this Fourth Sunday of Easter I offer you this; timely today and always: The Power of Prayer A ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island. The two survivors, not knowing what else to do, agree that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island. The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man's parcel of land remained barren. After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was nothing. Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing. Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered the other man unworthy to receive God's blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered. As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven booming, "Why are you leaving your companion on the island?" "My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them," the first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything." "You are mistaken!" the voice rebuked him. "He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings" "Tell me," the first man asked the voice, "What did he pray for that I should owe him anything?" "He prayed that all your prayers be answered." For all we know, our blessings are not the fruits of our prayers alone, but those of another praying for us. So, as a priest friend (now departed) once said to me: You pray for me; I ll pray for you! God s blessings, Father Hewes

9 April 17, 2016 The Fourth Sunday of Easter 9 Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. The Holy Father gives us two prayer intentions each month, one a general intention and the other an intention for world missions. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER: God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. George Washington Military Religious Freedom at Stake: Marines: When Marine LCpl Sterling noticed other service members had placed personal items in their workplaces, she printed her favorite Bible verse, Isaiah 54:17: "No weapons formed against me shall prosper," and taped it in her workspace. Her supervisor ordered her to remove it, and Sterling was eventually court-martialed. Sterling had invoked her First Amendment and RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act) protection. The highest court in the military will soon hear LCpl Sterling's appeal. "If a service member has a right to display a secular poster, put an atheist bumper sticker on their car, or wear a Star of David, then LCpl Sterling has the right to display a small Bible verse on her desk," said Senior Counsel Berry from Liberty Institute. (first liberty.org, 3/24/16) Navy: The U.S. Navy threatened decorated Chaplain Wes Modder with detachment for cause, etc., after Modder answered questions from a junior officer who had come for private counseling that pertained to marriage and sexuality. Chaplain Modder answered according to his religious beliefs but was immediately removed from his duties and told to clean out his office when the junior officer filed a complaint against him. Liberty Institute attorneys asserted that federal law and military regulations forbid the Navy from punishing chaplains because they act according to their faith. On Sept. 3, 2015, Chaplain Wes Modder was exonerated of all charges. 11 April 17, 2016 The Fourth Sunday of Easter 11 SENIOR News...Y oung E nergetic S eniors Last weeks newsletter somehow was not printed so I will try to get you up to ate. We hope that everyone had a joyous Easter, and that the bunny was generous to all the little ones. On Holy Saturday, we held our annual blessing of the food that would be served at the Easter meal. Each year we have more children participating, along with their beautifully decorated baskets of eggs, candy and assorted goodies. Father Sikorski did a great job explaining the custom to the children. He then graciously posed for photos with the m. They can be seen in the YES GROUP photo gallery in the church vestibule.., Several of our members or their families have recently experienced Serious illness and deaths. Pray for them. It has been very difficult to plan trips, and even luncheons, but I am going to try again. I had great feedback with the trip to Greenport so I am thinking of repeating it sometime in July as June is such a busy month with graduation, weddings etc., and then maybe a trip to the Culinary Institute in October. Last week I also said that after 11 years of food and fun at Woodlock Pines, sadly it was not going to happen. Many of you were disappointed, so I called and re-secured the rooms for the morning of Monday September 19th thru Friday September 23, returning home after breakfast. Now all we need are the people to occupy them. It is also equally important that we have enough people taking the bus. This was the primary reason that it was cancelled in the first place. Last year we paid $55 per person for the bus. We must have as many people as possible riding to keep that price from increasing. For those of you who have never been to Woodloch, it s a fun place with great food, games and entertainment. There is always something to do. The rates are $644 p.p in Springbrook and $632 in the main building. Where can you get lodging, food, games and entertainment every night??? Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers; and for our police, fire. And all first responders. God bless America.
