5 September 24, 2017 The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 Dear Friends, At the time that Jesus summoned him to follow Him, Matthew was a publican, that is, a taxcollector for the Romans. His profession was hateful to the Jews because it reminded them of their subjection; the publican, also, was regarded by the Pharisees as the typical sinner. St. Matthew is known to us principally as an Evangelist. He was the first to put down in writing our Lord's teaching and the account of His life. His Gospel was written in Aramaic, the language that our Lord Himself spoke. St. Matthew No one was more shunned by the Jews than a publican, who was a Jew working for the Roman enemy by robbing his own people and making a large personal profit. Publicans were not allowed to trade, eat, or even pray with others Jews. One day, while seated at his table of books and money, Jesus looked at Matthew and said two words: "Follow me." This was all that was needed to make Matthew rise, leaving his pieces of silver to follow Christ. His original name, "Levi," in Hebrew signifies "Adhesion" while his new name in Christ, Matthew, means "Gift of God." The only other outstanding mention of Matthew in the Gospels is the dinner party for Christ and His companions to which he invited his fellow tax-collectors. The Jews were surprised to see Jesus with a publican, but Jesus explained that he had come "not to call the just, but sinners." St. Matthew is known to us principally as an Evangelist, with his Gospel being the first in the New Testament. His Gospel was written in Aramaic, the language that our Lord Himself spoke and was written to convince the Jews that their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. Not much else is known about Matthew. According to tradition, he preached in Egypt and Ethiopia and further places East. Some legends say he lived until his nineties, dying a peaceful death, others say he died a martyr's death. In the traditional symbolization of the evangelists, based on Ezech. 1:5-10 and Rev. 4:6-7, the image of the winged man is accorded to Matthew because his Gospel begins with the human genealogy of Christ. Patron: Accountants; bankers; bookkeepers; customs officers; security guards; stock brokers; tax collectors; Salerno, Italy. Symbols: Angel holding a pen or inkwell; bag of coins; loose coins; halberd; inkwell; king; lance; man holding money; man holding money box and/or glasses; money bag; money box; purse; spear; sword; winged man; young man; book; man sitting at a desk. 6 September 24, 2017 The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone Fax maryccd@smrcc.org LOOKING AHEAD Registration forms for the upcoming Fall/Winter Program (October 2017 thru April 2018) grades two through eight, are coming in at a slower pace. Summer 2017 is fading and school has begun. Let us not forget to return to Religious Education. It is important that you return those bright yellow forms as soon as possible. If you don t have the registration form, you can come into the Religion office and we will give you one. Applications cannot be processed if we don t have them and your first and second choice may become compromised. Children are already being put into classes for our program that begins the week of October 2nd. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $ per child is due at that time. For safety reasons, ALL students, grades 1 thru 6, must be signed in and out by a parent or adult. Students in the 7th and 8th grades can be dropped off at the door by the Gym and come right upstairs to their classrooms BUT MUST BE SIGNED OUT EACH WEEK BY A PARENT OR ADULT. Situations in the past have caused us to insist on the parent/adult sign out for these grades. This is for your child s safety and protection as well as ours, not to mention it is dark when the children are leaving the building and they do not always see or know where their parent has parked. GRADE LEVEL MASSES FOR WINTER AND SUMMER PROGRAM STUDENTS Sunday, October 8, 2017, 1st & 2nd grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. Sunday, October 15, 2017, 3rd & 4th grade will attend the 9:30 Mass. 17 RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program (UPDATED FROM 9/17 BULLETIN) September 24, 2017 The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time 17 Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Matthew s will renew the Spiritual Adoption Program beginning in September. The members of St. Matthew s parish family will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 3,600 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to adopt. You may adopt a child individually or as a family. Even though you will not know the baby for whom you will be praying, you will be asked to name the child, thereby giving the baby the humanity he or she deserves. You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of prayer is great. You will receive monthly reports through the parish bulletin describing your baby s development. Posters at the Respect Life Bulletin Board in the breezeway will also update you on the monthly progress of your child whose date of birth we will celebrate in 40 weeks on June 23, Keep track of the size, too, with the ruler on the right edge of the posters! Best of all, it s free -- the only commitment requested is a short daily prayer! There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God has given you? For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions on the Respect Life bulletin board in the breezeway or call Lisa at Respect Life News Spiritual Adoption Program Day One Developing Baby At the moment the father s sperm and mother s egg unite, a new and unrepeatable human being comes into existence, complete with his own unique set of DNA. Although he is only one cell, everything about this little person is already present: color of eyes, blood type, the height he will grow to be, color of hair everything! He will play a role in his family and his community a role only he can play! Nothing is added after conception to make him a complete human being. He already exists; all he needs is nourishment, a safe, warm environment, and most of all love. His parents don t even know he exists yet. Pray for them to safely bring their baby to birth so he can fulfill the mission God has for him. Spiritual Adoption Prayer Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you to save the life of, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in Your presence and in the sight of all. Amen

18 September 24, 2017 The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time 18 Worldwide Marriage Encounter Seek the LORD while he may be found, call him while he is near. Encourage those moments by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next WWME Weekends are Nov 3-5, 2017 in Huntington, NY and Feb 9-11, 2018 in Huntington, NY. For more information, call John & Toni Torio at or visit us at Focus on Religious Freedom From Catholics For Freedom of Religion Senators Attack Judicial Nominee's Catholic Faith: Despite the Constitution forbidding a religious litmus test, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Dick Durbin attacked Un. of Notre Dame law professor Amy Barret, nominee for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, and a Catholic, accusing, "The dogma lives loudly within you," and "Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?" These attacks followed Prof. Barret already stating, "It is never appropriate for a judge to apply their personal convictions whether it derive from faith or personal conviction." "The Amy Barret hearing reveals a new disturbing trend: Anti-Christian sentiments which were only once whispered behind closed doors are now being proclaimed from the rooftops by the most powerful people in society," said research fellow, Ryan Anderson. "At a time in which the nation is badly frayed, disoriented and confused, U.S. senators abused their high office to berate, slander, and demean a woman of exceptional legal wisdom simply because they suspected that aspects of her Catholic faith would make her an unjust judge," said a Catholic University of America professor. Fr. James Martin, S.J., said that Feinstein's comments were a "Throwback to an era when Catholics were seen as unthinking tools of the Pope. You can be a good Catholic citizen in our country. Ask JFK." (dailywire.com,9/7/17; lifesitenews.com, 9/8/17; citizens.org, 9/8/17) I will die in my bed, my successor will die in prison, and his successor will die a martyr in the public square." A warning from Cardinal Francis George, 2014
