1 Christ the King 22 nd November 2015 Vol. 33 No. 50 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Who are the masters of the universe? Is it those who pull the levers of the global financial markets? Is it the heads of state who command vast military forces? Is it the media moguls who control the flow of information? In 1929 Pope Pius XI decided it was time to throw down the gauntlet to the hostile powers of the world. He established the feast of Christ the King to let the world know where ultimate authority lay. Nearly a century later the religious and secular politics of the world have changed radically, yet we still dare to claim that love conquers all, and none have loved and ever will love like Jesus Christ. This is the power that reaches deep into our hearts and extends to the farthest reaches of the universe. This is the kingdom of Christ, as the Preface declares: an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. Father Peter, the Parish Councillors and Parishioners extend a very warm welcome to Fr Colin Fowler who joined our parish family this week. Rosarians Christmas afternoon Tea Tuesday 1 st December 2 4 pm The Sisters of Saint Catherine s have generously offered to host a Christmas afternoon tea at the Convent, 33 Williamstown Road, Doubleview on Tuesday 1 st December at 2 4 pm. 2 Cake Stall & Parish Morning Tea Our Parish s Society of St. Vincent De Paul (Woodlands conference) has a long term association with a twin conference in the State of Kerala, India. Each year our conference makes a small donation to support a specific project for the benefit of the needy in Kerala. To fulfil this ongoing mission the Woodlands Conference intends to raise funds with a cake stall. The Cake sale will be held in conjunction with the Parish morning tea to be held on Sunday the 6 th of December after the 8.00 am and am Masses. Some parishioners have already volunteered to provide cupcakes for sale! If you could help with the donation of cupcakes, cakes or slices, it would be helpful if you could register your interest with Kevin ( kesusai@gmail.com or phone ), or with Kaye Shervington. Otherwise, just bring your culinary delights on the morning but please include a list of ingredients, as required by law. This will be a wonderful opportunity to share goodwill and make a joyful community contribution towards the less fortunate. Please join in and help this great cause. Your generous support is appreciated. * * * * * * Christmas Hampers Baskets will be available for Christmas Hamper donations after all masses on the 28 th /29 th November & 5 th /6 th December, to be returned 12 th /13 th December. 3 Saint of the Week St Columban (Nov 23) St Columban was the greatest of the Irish missionaries who worked on the European continent. As a young man who was greatly tormented by temptations of the flesh, he sought the advise of a religious woman who had lived a hermit s life for years. He saw in her answer a call to leave the world. He went first to a monk on an island in Lough Erne, then to the great monastic seat of learning at Bangor. After many years of seclusion and prayer, he travelled to Gaul (modern-day France) with 12 companion missionaries. They won wide respect for the rigor of their discipline, their preaching, and their commitment to charity and religious life in a time characterised by clerical laxity and civil strife. St Columban established several monasteries in Europe which became centres of religion and culture. Like all saints, he met opposition. Ultimately he had to appeal to the pope against complaints of Frankish bishops, for vindication of his orthodoxy and approval of Irish customs. He reproved the king for his licentious life, insisting that he marry. Since this threatened the power of the queen mother, St Columban was deported to Ireland. His ship ran aground in a storm, and he continued his work in Europe, ultimately arriving in Italy, where he found favour with the king of the Lombards. In his last years he established the famous monastery of Bobbio, where he died. His writings include a treatise on penance and against Arianism, sermons, poetry and his monastic rule. Healing Mass Welcome It was a bonus to welcome Fr Colin to the parish as he concelebrated with Fr Peter at the November Healing Mass. About 70 parishioners and visitors were anointed. The Agape Group again led us in song. Rosary Care volunteers Stephanie, Filomena and Maureen prepared the morning tea in our temporary meeting place in the sun behind the church. Dorothy Johnston Christmas Vigil Choir The choir's first practice for the Christmas Vigil Mass will be at 7.30pm on Monday November 30th. Please feel welcome to join in, even if you have no previous experience of choral singing. Any enquiries to Helen or Julie Lost Property There are a large number of items in the lost property cupboard at the back of the church (adjacent to the confessionals). Please check to see if any items belong to you. Anything not retrieved by the end of this month will be donated to the St Vincent de Paul Society. Columban Calendar The 2015 Columban Art Calendar is now available at the Piety Stall for $7.50. This beautifully illustrated calendar makes an ideal Christmas gift! Kids Corner
