1 3 rd Sunday in Ord. Time 21 st / 22 nd January 2017 Vol. 35 No. 7 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Only today do we really set out on our journey through Matthew s gospel. And what a journey it promises to be! We join Jesus at the launch of his life s work. We watch him set off on his mission of preaching and healing, and hear his call to follow him. Even as we head off, Matthew makes us mindful of the Christmas festival we have just enjoyed. He prefaces Jesus ministry with the prophetic words spoken at Midnight Masses: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. We hear it today in the first reading. To keep us from being too easily enthused by these inspirational texts, Paul douses us with the cold water of realism. The Christian community at Corinth has fractured into competing factions. Paul has to appeal for unity with all his persuasive power. At the heart of the good news he preaches lies the cross of Christ. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion We are presently experiencing a shortage of Extraordinary Ministers some have retired, some are experiencing ill health and others are away on holidays. To cope with the reduced numbers, in the short term, there will only be 3 Ministers assisting with Holy Communion at the Saturday 6.00pm Mass and 2 at each of the Sunday morning Masses. Fr Peter The Legion of Mary Rosary Around Lake Monger Friday 10th February Starting at 7:00 pm You are invited to join in the Rosary procession around Lake Monger on Friday 10th February. The procession starts at the carpark end of Dodd Street and takes approximately 1 ½ hours. The paths are wheelchair and stroller accessible. If you are unable to walk there will be an area at the starting point to gather and participate in the rosary please bring your own chair. Please bring your own torch as no naked flames are allowed pen lights will be available for sale. 2 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Hearing that John had been arrested Jesus went back to Galilee, and leaving Nazareth he went and settled in Capernaum, a lakeside town on the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the prophecy of Isaiah was to be fulfilled. Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Way of the sea on the far side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations! The people that lived in darkness has seen a great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned. From that moment Jesus began his preaching with the message, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father they followed him. He went round the whole of Galilee teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness among the people. Commentary on the Gospel Jesus calls the four fishermen to follow him he calls them as they are, with their imperfections; with all their faults and failings. The fishermen leave their nets and follow Jesus. They don t wait until they are perfect, they follow Jesus when he calls them. The story of these fishermen is also our story. We too are called by Jesus to follow him. And Jesus does not wait until we are perfect, until we have it all together and have all the answers. We follow Jesus by being the face of God s mercy to our world. We do this when others can see the face of Christ in us. CONSTRUCTION OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY PARISH CENTRE Dear Parishioners I am very pleased to inform you that Badge Constructions (WA) Pty Ltd. has been appointed to build the new Parish Centre including the Priory. We are aiming to exchange contracts during the week commencing 23 January. To ensure that the cost of the building, including internal furnishing and landscape work, can be completed within our budget and on time, Badge has agreed to undertake value engineering studies to achieve ongoing savings by working collaboratively with our architects and quantity surveyor. Overall, the tender process has produced a good outcome for the parish because Badge is already working on the adjacent site, building the new aged care facility for Regis. This means the company has on hand a readily available construction team and equipment so it can begin work immediately. Furthermore, the appointment of a common contractor minimises potential interface issues that may arise between the adjacent building sites. Work is expected to start on 1 February and should be completed within 28 weeks. However, before the building site is cordoned off, Badge will begin work in the front of the church to provide additional car parking to replace bays on the south side of the church which will become part of the construction site. While every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience, parishioners are nevertheless requested to be cautious and to observe safety signs and directions when construction work commences. Although it has taken a long time to achieve this exciting milestone, the Parish can now look forward to owning a modern facility which will serve current and future needs of our community. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Dominican Fathers for generously supporting this project as well as everyone, past and present, who have been involved in making this a reality. May God Bless you all. Yours in Christ Fr Peter Nguyen OP, PP
3 Film Review: Jackie We all know the stories of the presidents who held office in the White House. Their administrations are their legacies, however it is to a lesser extent that we know the stories of the strong-willed women who stood beside them. But in Pablo Larrain s latest film, Jackie, it is history s most iconic First Lady, Jacqueline Jackie Kennedy, who takes centre stage. Jackie Kennedy (Academy Award winner Natalie Portman) seemed to live the idyllic life. As wife of the charismatic President of the United States John F. Kennedy (Casper Phillipson), Jackie spent her time fulfilling her First Lady duties while caring for their children. Perfectly poised, softly spoken and a fashion icon, Jackie spends her time redecorating the White House, hosting lavish soirees and jet-setting with her husband. However, her world is shaken after the 1963 assassination of her husband. Under the scrutiny of the public eye, Jackie navigates through her grief as she prepares to leave the White House, raise her young children as a single mother and plan her husband s funeral.. The use of the real life interview scenario is profoundly effective and allows viewers to see how Jackie transitioned from timid housewife to a dutiful yet powerful First Lady, who knew how to use the media to her advantage. Jackie is a beautifully crafted film that gives an insightful look into a private yet iconic woman s life during one of history s most defining moments. While the film is about one of the world s most glamorous women, there is little glamour in Jackie as the subject matter focuses on a distressing time in her life. The film has some gory and distressing scenes and at times can be slow paced. But with a superb cast led by Portman, stunning costumes and a solid screenplay, Jackie like the former First Lady herself is mesmerising to watch.
