1 19 th / 20 th August 2017 Vol. 35 No. 37 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time One of the striking features of the gospels is the unflattering picture they present of the Twelve, Jesus hand-picked disciples. They are shown as a dull of mind, slow to believe, prone to rivalry and ambition, and when it really mattered, cowardly. Jesus, by contrast is patient, passionate, steadfast and powerful. What is exceptional is a story in which Jesus is shown as coming off second-best. What is even more extraordinary is that his victor is not only a woman but a foreigner. That s today s gospel story. The Canaanite woman challenged the narrow horizons of Jesus mission; now her story takes the question to us. How broad is our outlook? How inclusive is our vision? How courageous are we in going beyond what is familiar and comfortable? What is the outreach of our mission? Paul wrestles with the issue from the opposite perspective. What is the place of his fellow Israelites in God s all-inclusive plan for humankind? Have they been displaced and abandoned in favour of the Gentiles? The readings for today provide much food for thought. Come along to the morning tea after the 10 am Mass this weekend to farewell Father Peter who will be leaving our parish on the 28th August. 2 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. Give her what she wants, they said because she is shouting after us. He said in reply, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. Lord, she said help me. He replied, It is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the house-dogs. She retorted, Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master s table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, you have great faith. Let you wish be granted. And from that moment her daughter was well again. Father Peter s Birthday Dinner 60 Parishioners attended Fr Peter s 60th birthday celebration at the Herdsman Hotel on Wednesday night. Dessert came in the form of two beautiful cakes made by Elizabeth Susai and Anne Doherty. Thank you Elizabeth and Anne. Father Peter cut the cakes and gave a warm and fun speech. It was a most enjoyable evening. Rosary Care Short Term Assistance (Brochure available on notice board) Phone: Doris or Catherine Same Sex Marriage Vote Archbishop Costelloe has written a Pastoral Letter to the Catholic community of Perth in relation to the upcoming postal ballot on same-sex marriage. The letter can be found online at: It will also be published in the e-record and the Record magazine. Given the importance of this matter Archbishop Costelloe has asked parishioners, especially young people, to make sure they are registered to vote and actually do so. 3 August 21: Special Feast Days Saint Pius X Born Giuseppe Sarto at Riese (Italy) in Died at Rome on 20 August 914. He was elected pope in 1903, after being bishop of Mantua and patriarch of Venice. In pursuit of his motto, to renew all things in Christ, he initiated reforms of the liturgy and of canon law and took stern measures against modernist trends in theology. His effort to avert world war were frustrated. He is remembered for his poverty and for his promotion of liturgical participation, especially of frequent communion, to which he admitted young children. August 22: The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary This feast was established by Pius XII in 1955 and was celebrated on 31 May. Since 1969 it has been observed on 22 August to stress its relationship to the Assumption (15 August): taken up into glory, Mary became queen of heaven and earth. August 24: Saint Bartholomew Named in the list of apostles and generally identified with Nathaiel of Cana, the Israelite without guile (John 1:47) who was led to Jesus by the apostle Philip (3 May).
