Catholic Mission is the official overseas missionary aid charity of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. Pope Francis in his humility simply says; I am a mission on this earth; this is the only reason why I am here in this world. 2 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who prided themselves on being virtuous and despised everyone else. Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself, I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes on all I get. The tax collector stood some distance away, not daring even to raise his eyes to heaven, but he beat his breast and said, God, be merciful to me, a sinner. This man, I tell you, went home again at rights with God; the other did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted. Commentary on the Gospel Luke alone includes the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. It goes hands in hand with the story of the unjust judge to present some of Jesus teaching on prayer. The contrast between the two characters is deliberately extreme, so much so that we run the risk of not identifying ourselves with either of them. The figure whose prayer is counterfeit is called a Pharisee, but this does not mean that all Pharisees were self-righteous, nor that self-righteousness was confined to this particular group or to the Jewish tradition. The temptation to be smug and self-satisfied lurks in every religious and moral system. Not only is the Pharisee s prayer selfabsorbed but also full of contempt for others. Insofar as we imagine ourselves to be selfmade we run the risk of the same kind of pride. The one whose prayer is held up as a model represents all those whose way of life attracts public condemnation and brings inward alienation. Rather than providing God with information, he lays his life open to the gift of divine mercy. The parable does not demand that we judge ourselves to be unworthy creatures. But insofar as we acknowledge our failure to choose the good and our inability to redeem ourselves, we can pray like the tax collector and be brought into right relationship with God. This is the good news! Priory and Parish Centre Building Update Since the last update Fr. Peter and the Parish Building Committee have been in active discussions with Peter Hunt Architects and we are pleased to inform you that the layout of the facility has been finalised to suit the Parish s current and future needs. Detailed drawings have been completed and a Pre-Tender estimate has been prepared by Rawlinson s (Quantity Surveyors) to serve as a yardstick to compare quotes. Tenders have been issued to six builders on the 22 nd of October. They have been invited to submit lump sum quotes by the 17 th of November Once technical and commercial evaluations are completed we are aiming to award a contract to the successful builder by mid December 2016 for construction work to commence in January In the meantime, we are continuing to maintain a collaborative relationship with the Badge construction team, the contractor building the Regis Aged Care facility. We have recently agreed to allow them to undertake earthworks along the common boundary line to blend levels between the two projects for a mutually beneficial outcome. The Building Committee proposes to give a progress report and an opportunity for parishioners to discuss and view plans at the Annual General Meeting to be held on Sunday the 20 th of November after the 10.00am Mass.
