1 10 th Sunday in Ord. Time 4 th / 5 th June 2016 Vol. 34 No. 26 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The number three is deeply imbedded in our daily discourse. From the superstitious ( third time lucky ) to the sublime ( Father, Son and Spirit ) from the playful ( scissors, paper, rock ) to the philosophical ( beauty, goodness, truth ), threesomes are part and parcel of our everyday conversation. There are plenty to be found in the scriptures too. Think of fasting, praying and almsgiving; and of Peter, James and John. One triad that resonates with today s word is that of the widow, orphan and stranger in Deuteronomy 12:18. Together these represent acute vulnerability. In ancient societies, without the myriad social services that we are accustomed to, to be husbandless, fatherless or friendless was to face disaster. Bereft of human support, their only hope was to trust in God. Such ones became to be now as the poor of the Lord. Today s word presents us with two such poor ones, widows who had lost their last support, their only sons. Their stories make us wonder. Would we be steadfast in the face of catastrophic loss? Or, to put it another way, dare we conduct a thorough audit of what we put our trust in? Is there a hollow centre in our lives or a pulsing heart of faith. OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY FOUNDATION The Our Lady of the Rosary Foundation has been set up to accept and manage, on behalf of the parish, bequests and donations for, among other things, the future maintenance of our beautiful and unique church. If you would like to know how you can make a bequest, or simply want to know more about the Foundation, please take a brochure from the church foyer. Father Peter or any of the directors, whose contact details are in the brochure, would be pleased to answer your questions. Rosary Care Sunday 11 th / 12 th June At all Masses next week-end we will be talking to you about our work and the ways people with even limited time can find joy in helping others. See page 3 for more information Overhead Projectors As you are no doubt aware, one projector is currently not working. We are waiting on a quote to either repair or replace it.

2 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. Do not cry, he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, Young man, I tell you to get up. And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying, A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people. And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside. Commentary on today s Readings Death is one of those human experiences, perhaps the only human experience that is common to all of us. For some, it comes suddenly and tragically. For others we seem to have to wait, perhaps watching years of decline in the process. But however death comes, whether unexpected or long-waited, however we experience it, we still, I think, struggle with it. And if the person who dies is close to us, one of our own, the pain is all the more acute. Furthermore, it never seems part of the deal to see parents having to bury one of their own children. In both the first reading and the Gospel today, we hear of two widows who are about to bury their only sons. Neither widow is named; neither son is named. In this they stand as representing all the widows, all the poor, all the little ones of this world. Certainly, for Luke, they stand as symbols for all those for whom the Son of the God, who cannot be limited by death, came upon this earth. In leaving their identities shrouded in mystery, Luke is making the point that the story is not about them. But rather about the great prophet who has appeared among us [Anthony Doran Pastoral Liturgy] Film Review He Named Me Malala When Malala Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban in 2012 on her way to school, she became almost overnight- an icon of the struggle for women s education around the world. Before this, she was known only in her native Pakistan, where she had spoken out against the regime s denial of schooling to girls, and had blogged anonymously about the experience with the help of BBC journalists. But, along with her status as a human-rights campaigner and winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace prize (together with Indian children s rights activist, Kailash Satyarthi), Malala is also a student, a teenage girl and member of a loving family aspects which are perhaps best revealed in Davis Guggenheim s film, He Named Me Malala. Education is a continuing theme in the film, discussed through the actions and comments of Malala s father, Ziaudden, who is himself a teacher and poet who spoke up for women s education in Pakistan, and encouraged his daughter to do the same. One important scene shows him adding Malala s name to the family tree, where women had previously been unmentioned: in this way, it is indicated that giving girls an identity through education and naming allows them to take their rightful place in society, in Pakistan and elsewhere. Her parents stories also touch upon this, particularly her mother Tor Pekai s experience of growing up in a world where women were not expected to go to school, but instead readied for marriage and family in their teens. He Named Me Malala is both an informative and contemplative film, revealing its titular heroine to be a normal girl, albeit one shaped by a passion for learning and justice. By following Malala s work at the UN and with schoolgirls overseas, it presents the possibility of a world in which women are educated and full of citizens and, by reflecting on her beliefs, it considers the value of forgiveness.
