1 Ascension of the Lord 7 th / 8 th May 2016 Vol. 34 No. 22 Only one verse in the entire New Testament makes chronological reference to the ascension. In Act 1:3, Luke states that Jesus continued to appear to the disciples for forty days after his resurrection. He goes on to present his account of Jesus being taken up into heaven. In spite of this ancient witness, the first testimony to the celebration of Ascension Thursday in Rome does not appear until around the year 500. Originally the fifty days of the Easter season were celebrated as a single unit culminating in the feast of Pentecost. Gradually, however, this unity broke down until the season was divided between the forty days leading to Ascension, and the ten days from there to Pentecost. Pentecost itself became a separate feast with an octave. Since Vatican II, we have largely recovered the initial unity of the Easter season. But not quite, because the document governing the liturgical year still refers to the weekdays between Ascension and Pentecost as a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In Australia Luke s chronology is not taken literally; the Ascension of the Lord is transferred to the following Sunday. Happy Mothers Day to all our mothers, grandmothers & great-grandmothers! Rosarians Mothers Day Mass Our annual Mothers' Day Mass will take place at St. Catherine's Convent, on Tuesday, 10 th May at 1.15 pm. For enquiries or lifts please contact Angela or Dorothy St. Vincent De Paul Society Funds from December 2015 Sale of Cakes The St. Vincent De Paul Society wishes to inform Parishioners that the money raised from last December s sale of cakes, has yet to be disbursed to its twin conference in Kerala, India. There is however, ongoing communication between the two conferences to obtain a proposal to fund a worthy cause. Once a positive response is received and approved, funds will be remitted through the proper channels and Parishioners will be kept informed with progress reports. In the meantime thank you once again for your generous support. Fred Symons President
2 \ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus said to his disciples: You see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this. And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high. Then he took them out as far as the outskirts fo Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God. Commentary on the Gospel St Augustine in an Ascension sermon invited his congregation to join Christ in heaven by lifting up their hearts to him. That lifting up is faith, and hope, and love in action, in deep prayer, both personal and liturgical, and in the many different works of Christian service. And we today celebrate Christ s ascension with those dispositions, confident that in our careful and prayerful listening to his Word before joining him in offering ourselves and our lives with him in the Eucharistic sacrifice, an offering sealed by our receiving his body and blood in holy communion we are confident that he strengthens and deepens and increases our faith and hope and love. We are renewed by his assurance to the disciples: Know that I am with you always, yes, to the end of time. It s that assurance from the head of the Church, which is his body, that enables the Church in good times and in bad, despite the weakness and sinfulness of its ministers and of us its members, to persevere in obedience to his commission: Go, make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commandments I gave you. [Pastoral Liturgy-David Barry OSB] Safeguarding Officers Archbishop Timothy Costelloe is an ardent advocate of putting in place people and processes that will protect children from abuse within the church. This is, at least in part, a result of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. We are grateful to parishioners, Cathy Bostock and Anne Taylor, who have offered up their time and dedication to be your Parish s appointed Safeguarding Officers. Cathy & Anne are the first point of contact for anyone who has been abused, feels as if they might be abused or suspects that someone else may be being abused. Their pictures are in the foyer of the church and they wear the bright pink Safeguarding Officer badges at Mass on the weekend. Their role is to listen to, record and pass on any suspicious circumstances to the Safeguarding Project Coordinator for the Catholic Archdiocese of Perth, Andrea Musulin. They can also act immediately to suspend any possibly worrying interactions. At Archbishop Costelloe s direction, all members of the various volunteer groups that assist in running the Parish, including the Parish Priest, must have completed Working With Children Checks. No adult, other than the child s parent, may be alone with a child on church premises, or at a church event. In addition, environments in which children are heard and supported should be the norm within the church. If you wish to discuss a problem in the area of child protection in the Parish, you can either speak directly to one of the Safeguarding Officers or ring the Parish Office on and leave your contact details with the Parish Pastoral Assistant, Kaye Shervington, so that one of the Safeguarding Officers can get back to you. 3 New Parish Priory & Centre Update A Project Management team, made up of our parishioners, has been formed to prepare for the construction of the new parish priory and centre. The building will be located along the southern driveway servicing the church. The centre adjoining the priory will comprise meeting and administrative facilities which will be available to all active parish groups in the future. Drawings can be seen on The committee members are: 1. Fr. Peter 2. Kevin Susai Coordinator 3. Peter Whyte Legal/Commercial 4. Julie Prior Accounts 5. Will Liau Contracts Administrator / Civil Engineering 6. Richard Goodwin Public Communications / Information Technology 7. David Doherty Electrical Engineering 8. Cost Comptroller TBA 9. Kaye Shervington Executive Pastoral Assistant This team will be responsible for finalising the detailed plans, monitoring the tender process, select a competent builder and oversee the construction to ensure the work is completed within budget and on schedule. Discussions have also been held with the Architects to reactivate the construction programme. Further meetings will be held with them once the Dominican Fathers have decided on their requirements. Regis Aged Care, the new owner of the adjacent land, has been contacted to obtain information about their plans for their proposed facility. Although the Parish understands the land was sold by the Dominican Fathers on the basis that the footprints previously established and approved will remain in place, the Parish is looking forward to being given an opportunity to view the final plans. oa 2016 Sacramental Program Confirmation: Retreat Day: May 13 th 8:30 am Sacrament: May 14 th 6:00 pm May 15 th 10:00 am Reconciliation: Retreat Day: June 24 th 8:30 am or Commitment Mass: July 23 rd 6:00 pm July 24 th 10:00 am Workshop: July 27 th 5 & 6:30 pm Sacrament: August 6 th 5:00 pm August 13 th 5:00 pm First Eucharist: Commitment Mass: August 27 th 6:00 pm or August 28 th 10:00 am Workshop: August 31 st 5 & 6:30 pm Retreat Day: Sept 2 nd 8:30 am Sacrament: Sept 10 th 6:00 pm Sept 11 th 10:00 am Candidates for First Eucharist and Confirmation must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before they can receive these Sacraments.
