2 Prayers and Readings COLLECT Almighty God, who gave such grace to your apostle Saint Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ and brought his brother with him: call us by your holy word, and give us grace to follow you without delay and to tell the good news of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. FIRST READING - Isaiah A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. 7How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns. 8 Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the LORD to Zion. 9 Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the LORD has comforted his people, he has redeemed Jerusalem. 10 The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. 3 SECOND READING - Romans A reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans. 12There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! 16 But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have; for Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL - Matthew We say or sing Alleluia Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. 18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fish for people. 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 3

6 CHURCH DUNCAN GOLDTHORPE: As you might have heard, our curate suffered a heart attack whilst on a trip to Israel. He has had surgery and is continuing to make a good recovery and we hope he will be coming home this week. Please hold him in your prayers and send messages of support for him, Ruth and the family to the office and we will forward them. PARISH CHRISTMAS CARD 2018: There are bundles of Christmas cards for each road in the parish at the back of the church. If you adopted a road for delivery earlier this year, you will find your name on that road s bundle and we hope you will take it to deliver, please. Some of the bundles are un-named - please help us by delivering one or more of these if you can. If you live outside the parish, please pick up a card for yourself from the shelf at the back of church. CHRISTMAS CHOIR: A reminder that there will not be a rehearsal on Friday 30 November for the augmented choir. We recommence rehearsals on Friday 7 December, 8.25pm pm. Singers of any voice part are welcome and it is preferable if you can attend as many of the weekly rehearsals as possible during November and December. CRAFTY MRS NOAH have a stall in the Main Hall today after the 10.00am service and following the Christingle service this afternoon in aid of The Children s Society. There is also a raffle on the stall this year with prizes including a 75 M&S hamper that has been donated. We will also have our amazing Christmas wreaths on sale. ADVENT CAROL SERVICE: This takes place on next Sunday, 2 December, at 6.00pm. This service includes some wonderful Advent Carols, Anthems and Readings and offers a reflective candlelit service. It explores the theme of the light of God s love shining in the darkness bringing hope, forgiveness and reconciliation to the world as we await in wonder at the coming celebration of the birth of the Christ child at Christmas. It offers a wonderful way to prepare for Christmas as we watch and wait in expectation of receiving God s love anew for our friends, family, the world and ourselves. TRAVELLING CRIB: Would you and your family like to host our travelling crib this year? It will start its journey next Sunday and if you would like to join in, please sign up on the list now at the back of the church. If you would like to know more about the crib, please speak to Vicki Edwards. PILGRIM STUDY GROUP: We will be meeting tomorrow, Monday 26 November, 2.30pm. If interested in joining us please contact Christine Garrett. CONCERTS AT ST ANDREW S - NIKKI ILES JAZZ GROUP: Saturday 1 December, 7.30pm. Exquisite, sensitive player and consummate, lyrical composer in the European jazz school, Nikki Iles and her Quintet join us for our last concert of The perfect way to spend a winter evening. Tickets available from the Church Centre Office or online via the Church website. Come early for a glass of wine before the concert. BOOK CIRCLE: The next meeting is on Monday 3 December, 7.45pm when we will be discussing Walking with Gospel Women by Fiona Stratta. Do hope you can join us. 6

7 DEFIBRILLATOR: It is wonderful to have our Defibrillator installed outside the Church Centre entrance and ready for use in emergencies. Please dial 999 for the access code. It will be officially commissioned in the presence of our local ward councillors at 12.00noon on Sunday 9 December to which all are welcome. Any contribution to the cost of the Defib can be brought to the Church Centre Office. SEEKING CAROL SINGERS: Bedford Town Centre Churches have been invited to sing carols in the Harpur Centre on Saturday 15 December, meeting at 11.45am. If you would like to take part, please let the Church Office know, so we can let Revd Kelvin Woolmer, Town Centre Chaplain, know how many volunteers from St Andrew s can be expected. The more, the merrier! CAROL SINGING IN RESIDENTIAL HOMES: We will soon be on the look-out for carol singers to join with others from St Andrew s to sing carols and/or recite poetry and readings in local nursing homes. On Tuesday 18 December at 11.00am a group will be going to Kimbolton Lodge. On Wednesday 19 December we will be visiting Dorothea Court at 6.15pm and then Hepworth House at 7.00pm and the final visit will be to Airedale at 10.30am on Friday 21 December. Please make a note in your diary if you would like to come and watch out for the sign-up sheet. MINCE PIES AND MULLED WINE SERVED AFTER THE NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS SERVICE 23 DECEMBER: Please sign the lists in church if (a) you can provide some mince pies and (b) if you can help prepare, set up the Hall before the service and/or serve wine after the service and help clear up. Members of the Events Committee would appreciate some extra help, if you would like to know more please contact Hilary Papworth. LEADING YOUR CHURCH INTO GROWTH IN DERBYSHIRE: Are you under 30? KITCHEN TIDY-UP: The recent kitchen clean revealed several items which individuals have brought in for events over the past few months and which have not subsequently been reclaimed (for example, cake boxes). They will be in the Main Hall after the 10.00am service today, so please take a look and take away any that belong to you. We will be disposing of any items not reclaimed after Sunday 9 December.
