3 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3 May 3, 2015 Simple Laws 1 John 3:18-24 Financial Activities There are a lot of laws. Our national constitution is long. Every state, county and municipality has additional rules and regulations. Sometimes you don t know what a law is until you break it. Laws are important. They are necessary. But they are so numerous that it s hard to keep track of them all. Our church is the same way. Our laws are important to us, but they are numerous. And they change. It is hard to keep up with them. Couldn t it be simpler somehow? The First Letter of John says God basically has just two laws. His commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. There, that was simple. Or was it? To believe in the name of Jesus means that we order our lives around this belief: He is the Son of God, the one who came to save the world. His teaching, ministry and example should shape everything we do. And love one another? Well, that s easy when it comes to people we like. But it s not so easy with people we d rather ignore, or people who have become our criminal enemies. Loving one another is not so simple. Whether the laws are many or few, they are hard to keep. But those who keep God s commandments remain in him, and he in them. 5 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 5 May 3, 2015 St. Patrick Seniors putting the Scholar in athletics On Sunday, April 26, the Central Michigan Athletic Conference (CMAC) held its annual Scholar Athlete Banquet at the Eagle Eye Country Club. The banquet, which is held each April, honors seniors from the nine CMAC schools who have maintained a grade point average above 3.40 and who also lettered in two or more varsity sports (at least one in their senior year) in their high school careers. The Scholar Athlete banquet is a wonderful celebration, which invites the honored student athletes along with their parents and school administrators to a delicious catered meal, followed by a keynote speaker and presentation of the certificates. This year's guest speaker was Kaitlyn Theisen, a 2011 Saranac High School graduate. She encouraged the CMAC Scholar Athletes to take the lessons they have learned on the field, court or track and in the classroom with them the rest of their lives. She also offered many suggestions and life experiences that would help them throughout their lives. The Athletic Director from each school read the names of the scholar athletes and gave information about them which included their college plans. As their names were called, the student athletes came to the front of the banquet room where they received a certificate from their superintendent or principal acknowledging their accomplishment and giving them individual recognition of their hard work. St. Patrick School had 16 scholar athletes recognized at the banquet on Sunday, which represents 67% of the senior class. The students, recognized for both their academic and athletic success were Daniel Bosworth, Connor Hengesbach, Allison Hodge, Savannah Hodge, Eli Hoppes, Shelby Miller, Dawn Price, Bailey Schneider, Kendall Schrauben, Madison Schrauben, Mackenzie Smith, Riley Smith, Jill Spitzley, Brittni Wilcox, Shannon Wilcox and Taylor Wilcox. St. Patrick School continues to encourage our students to use their gifts pursuing extra-curricular activities in both athletics and in other areas. We are excited and proud when our students are recognized for working hard, honoring their commitments, and being successful in the classroom and beyond. It is the final piece of our mission statement: We Achieve! Congratulations to our seniors who have achieved both in the classroom and on the field, court or track. 6 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 6 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN King s Korner I ran across this article recently, so I thought I d pass it on for the benefit of everyone. Etiquette during Mass seems to have been something that s been misplaced over the years. Fr. Larry Mass Etiquette: Things to Do and Not to Do During Mass 1. Fast before Mass. It is required that one fasts for at least 1 hour before receiving Holy Communion. The only exceptions are medicine, water or unless someone is ill and needs to eat sooner. 2. No food and drink in Church. The only exceptions would be milk for infants, water for the priest or choir (if discreet) and water for those who are ill. 3. Never chew gum in church! It breaks your one hour fast and it s distracting! 4. Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leaving the church. This is a reminder of our Baptism, which made us members of Christ's Church. 5. Dress modestly and appropriately. Beach wear should be saved for the beach. Wear your Sunday Best. As Catholics we believe that God comes down to meet us at every Mass. Shouldn t we dress for the occasion? 6. Show up at least a few minutes early and spend a little time preparing your heart for worshiping the God of the Universe. 7. Cell phones should never be used in Mass for calls or texting. The ONLY exceptions are emergencies (big ones, not everyday ones) and if you are using the phone for readings the lectionary or the said prayers/ responses. 8. When we enter and leave Church, genuflect (or bow your head) toward the Tabernacle. Christ is present for our sake. If someone is physically unable to genuflect, then a bow is sufficient. During Mass, if you pass in front of the altar or tabernacle, bow reverently. 9. Before Mass talking should be done quietly. Some people may be praying. 10. Take loud children to the back. Every parent knows that sometimes the baby is going to have a bad day. Parents with young children should sit on the end of a pew, if you can, so that you can take the child to the back quickly. There is no reason to be embarrassed about having to quiet your child, take the child to the back of the church immediately. It is worse to allow them to disturb others during Mass. 11. Prepare your offering before Mass rather than waiting until the collection basket is passed to you. 12. No bulletin reading during Mass. Imagine if you invited a guest to your house and before dinner (or during) they decided to read a magazine instead of talking to you. 14. Bow before receiving Holy Communion. Remember that you are before your Lord, show your respect with a bow of the head. 15. Do not receive from the chalice if you are sick. This is an act of charity.
