1 St. Jude Newsletter A quarterly newsletter dedicated to nurturing the growth and community of St. Jude Parish May June 2017 Perpetual Adoration Chapel: Our Monstrance In the month of February, 1980, my sister Mary died from cancer at the age of 35. Mary was a kind and loving person, and she was always ready to forgive others. She taught me forgiveness through her example. When Mary was told that she would not get better, she accepted God s will without complaining. After her death, my parents wanted to use Mary s estate money to purchase a gift for St. Jude parish. The Sisters of St. Clare in Evansville, Indiana had built a new Monastery which was smaller and no longer needed two Monstrances. The Sisters wanted to donate one of the Monstrances to the museum at the Cathedral in Fort Wayne. Father Widman, who was the Curator of the Historical Religious Museum, talked to our father about purchasing this Monstrance for the developing Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Jude. Mary s estate money was used t o purchase it. The Mary Derheimer family considers it a blessing and honor to know that Mary provided a resting place f or Jesus in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. 2 Easter Vigil 2017 SOCIAL ACTION AUXILIARY By Sheila McGarry The Social Action Committee is implementing a new program entitled the Social Action Auxiliary. Parishioners who participated in the Lenten Stations of Service by signing up for a group service opportunity will be receiving an invitation to join hands as a member of the SOCIAL ACTION AUXILIARY. We are extending the invitation to the parish as a whole. As a member of the Auxiliary, you will be notified of all Parish service projects throughout the year, not just those during Lent. A mechanism will be put in place so you can even sign-up online to volunteer. You will also be invited to join us when a community partner is going to speak at a Social Action meeting about how his or her agency implements one or several of the Works of Mercy. You will also have an open invitation to attend any Social Action meeting to observe the process of allocating the Parish Tithe and to share your ideas about future parish service projects. 4 Pentecost The 50th Day June 4, 2017 Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, And you will renew the face of the earth. The Greek word Pentecost means the 50 th day, referring to one of the pilgrim festivals of the Old Covenant, celebrating the wheat harvest 50 days after Passover. On this day early Christians remembered the Ascension of Jesus and the descent of the Holy Spirit. Only in the fourth century were they divided into the two separate feasts we celebrate today. By the time of Jesus, much of Palestinian Judaism considered Pentecost more than an agricultural festival. It was widely seen as the commemoration of the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. Early Christians saw this as a prefiguring of the new Pentecost of the Holy Spirit. Just as the old covenant, ratified in the Exodus out of Egypt, found its completion on Mount Sinai, so the new covenant, ratified in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus suffering, death, burial, and resurrection, found its completion when the power of the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles. Saints Augustine and Leo the Great made much of this in their writings, and this new Pentecost of the Holy Spirit was seen as the birthday of the church as the New Israel of God. The 4 th century pilgrim Egreria described the observance of Pentecost in the Jerusalem of her day. At 9:00 a.m., the people gathered at the church on Mount Zion, the traditional site of the Pentecost event, for a service that included the reading of the scripture passage concerning the descent of the Holy Spirit. Just after midday, there was another service at the traditional site of the Ascension, the Gospel and Acts descriptions of the Ascension were read. After sunset there was a great candlelight procession back to the city in the darkness, and people returned to their homes about midnight. It was only later that the two observances were separated. The Great 50 Days, beginning with Easter Sunday and ending with Pentecost Sunday, is a time of joy and triumph. In the early church, kneeling in prayer and fasting were forbidden during this period, a custom still observed in the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. It is a time of alleluias and the sprinkling of water, a time of baptism and confirmation and Eucharist. We bring this period to a close with a bang! On Pentecost, red vestments are worn to commemorate the fire of the Holy Spirit. Why not wear red to church that day, and throughout the day? On Pentecost, we ll sing songs of the Holy Spirit, and songs of discipleship. On this day, before we hear the Gospel, we sing The Golden Sequence, Veni, Sancte Spiritus ( Come, Holy Spirit ) a hymn invoking the Holy Spirit that has been sung on Pentecost for nearly 1,000 years. It was first seen in our Mass books around There are various stories about who the author may have been, but it was most likely Cardinal Stephen Langton (1128), Archbishop of Canterbury. It is called golden because of the richness of the text. Each verse is a prayer. This is the day the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles, and they went out into the world to preach the Gospel. We are called to do the same, as disciples of Jesus Christ. Let s keep in mind our parish mission statement: We, the Catholic Church of Saint Jude, called by Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, nourished by Word and Eucharist, commit our time, talent, and treasure to the growth of God s Reign in our world. 4

6 Youth Ministry Summer Mission Trip By Vickie Lortie We are planning our summer mission trip for June to South Bend, IN. St. Jude will partner with St. Therese, the Little Flower Parish and provide service work for many poor, disadvantaged, and those in need in the South Bend community. We will have St. Theresa of Calcutta as our Patroness of the week, calling on her intercession to help the poor in the way that is most meaningful to them. We have 25 teens registered currently and 9 on a waiting list, but are still in need of adult chaperones. If you can help us, please contact the youth ministry office. 7 By Mike Crick New Lights in St. Jude Gym Thank you Alumni! If you visit the St. Jude school gym, you will notice it is much brighter than it used to be. This is because of the installation of all new lights. The Gym lights went from 500 watt incandescent to 100 watt LED lights. The amount of light put out by the new bulbs is over 3 times what the old bulbs produced. This also means we are using a fifth of the energy that we used to. These savings are an estimate through the AEP program we used in which we will receive a rebate for these new lights. These bulbs are guaranteed for 50 thousand hours, which would be about 15 to 20 years of use. This will save us $10, off of our electric bill in just 5 years. The initial cost for these new lights was over $4,000, which was covered by the Eagle Alumni Build fund. The rebate from AEP will bring that cost down by over a third! That means our first Eaglemania took place in 1994, back when the cost of a gallon of gas was $1.09, Amazon first launched their website and the invention of the DVD was announced. We could not have had so many wonderful years and memories without the support of our parish community. Thank you to everyone who has supported this wonderful event! You can volunteer for as little as 1 hour and volunteer assignments are items such as manning a ticket booth, helping with a game or working in the food tent.
