Those who are facing surgeries or very serious health issues can see the priest after the Mass. The Anointing will take place near the Statue of Mary at the front left of the Church. The oils are reserved in the Olea Sancta Repository (Holy Oils) near the Baptismal Font. Family and friends are most welcome to be present together during the Anointing. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every Friday, in the Parish Center Chapel, there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 8:30am-12:00pm (between the two daily Masses). Please plan on coming to pray. Also, If you could sign up for an hour a week, or once a month, that would be great. Please contact the main office or see the sign up sheet at the Church entrance. We need at least two people for each hour. This is a real blessing for the mission of the Parish, the Harvard Catholic Center and the Choir School. 3 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Friends, I want to thank those who participated in the Prayer Service for Reparation and Healing in the Church. It was a sober grace to see the heartfelt concern for those who have been so hurt and the loving desire for purification of all bishops, priests, deacons, and religious as the whole Church seeks to serve better Jesus mission entrusted to us all. I also want to thank the many undergraduates at our Harvard Catholic Center who fasted on Friday for this intention. The repair work in our church building continues, as you can easily see. There are at least two projects at play. One is the ongoing repair of much of the plaster in the church. The second, bigger concern/work will be the replacement of a rotted beam discovered during the plaster repair near the old confessional and St. Joseph Altar. We will have to remove part of the church roof, the source of the water damage, and bring a new steel beam in by crane. A larger section of the church interior ceiling will have to be removed as well. When the beam is in place, the ceiling will be repaired, and the section of roof replaced. We hope to have this done by Christmas. Given all the work and the way it has effected the look of our walls, Stations of the Cross, and the capitals on the columns, we will also move ahead with a painting project in the church that had originally been scheduled for We hope to start this in January. All this, obviously, will require a Capital Campaign. I will provide a goal as things get clearer. However, we are looking to make it payable over time through 2023, which is the 100 th anniversary of the Church building. Improved lighting and a few other smaller projects will also be part of the plan. This is not easy news, I know, but together, we will do what has to be done. Our wonderful St. Paul s Choir School will be holding Open Houses for possible new students over the next weeks, beginning on Sunday, October 21 (see the bulletin for the complete schedule). As a graduate of the school and as someone who has stayed in touch with fellow alumni for decades, I can witness to you the impact that this school has on lives, both for the individual, for his family, and for the Church. I heartily encourage you to think about and identity any boys entering grades three through eight who have a basic ability in music, are capable of serious academic work, and would thrive in a small classroom, all boy, faith rooted school. What a blessing it would be if you planted the seed that would change someone s entire life! Please do! As many of you know, this year I am celebrating my 30 th anniversary of priesthood. With that, I ve decided to take an extended retreat and a little vacation. I am grateful to Fr. George and Fr. Patrick who will shoulder extra responsibilities while I am gone these next two weeks. 4 OCTOBER 14, 2018 CHECK OUT WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PAUL S FOOD PANTRY The food pantry is well-stocked, thanks to the incredible generosity of a few friends and parishioners. Items that are particularly helpful are raisins, other dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, herbal and flavored tea, and salad dressing. We are also getting requests for baby food as we are serving young families. Finally, we would like to have a day in the upcoming weeks when everyone receives laundry detergent. Although many of us consider laundry a chore, it is hard to imagine not having clean clothes because we don't have money for detergent. If you are able to contribute one or more bottles (or packages of pods), we would be most grateful. Also, we are in need of paper and plastic bags. PARISHIONER'S FORUM: LISTENING SESSION A listening session by and for parishioners will be held on Sunday, October 14 at 1:00pm in the Bishop Boles Conference Room, to provide a forum for those members of the Parish who are looking for a way to express their concerns and explore healthy ways to respond to the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Dorothy C. Buck, Ph.D. will facilitate. MID-CAREER PARISHIONERS GROUP The Mid-Career Parishioners Group enables parishioners forty-five and over to join together in fellowship, as a vehicle to participate in faith-related discussion groups, charitable activities, cultural excursions, social gatherings, and monthly after-dinner coffee hours. LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Are we content and satisfied with the bare minimum and essentials of our faith, or do we desire excellence and proficiency? The Ten Commandments represent the minimum and, if we are honest with ourselves, are pretty easy to keep. The fullness of the Gospel, however, is another story. Truly living as Jesus taught often comes with great self-sacrifice, self-emptying, and possibly leaving the things of this world behind. Are we ready to pursue this kind of life? God wants us to live and love abundantly not superficially. Love asks that we extend ourselves beyond the status quo and the bare minimum and venture into that which is risky, countercultural, and even radical. What we possess can no longer be important. When Jesus laid this out before the rich young man, he went away sad because he had much. When Jesus lays it out before us, how do we react? Happy Autumn!
