Kay Sunday, March 18, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent Cambridge, Massachusetts ANOINTING OF THE SICK SACRAMENT The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is offered after the 9:00am Mass on the First Saturday of each month. Those who are facing surgeries or very serious health issues can see the priest after the Mass. The Anointing will take place near the Statue of Mary at the front left of the Church. The oils are reserved in the Olea Sancta Repository (Holy Oils) near the Baptismal Font. Family and friends are most welcome to be present together during the Anointing. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Every Friday, there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 8:30am-12:00pm (between the two daily Masses). Please plan on coming to pray. Be sure to pray for Peace in the Holy Land with the Peace Dove that is lit on the side altar. Prayer cards with the history of the origins of the Dove and suggested prayers are in the basket by the Dove. Also, If you could sign up for an hour a week, or once a month, that would be great. Please contact the main office or see the sign up sheet at the Church entrance. We need at least two people for each hour. This is a real blessing for the mission of the Parish, the Harvard Catholic Center and the Choir School. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) The parish is always ready to receive adults into the process of preparation for baptism or reception into Full Communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Please call (617) for information. PARISH FOOD PANTRY Non-perishable food is received before every Mass for the pantry, which is open Saturdays from 11:00am-11:30am, or may be left in the parish office. CHURCH ACCESS FOR THE DISABLED Take elevator from the Parish Center Lobby at 29 Mount Auburn Street. Restrooms, handicapped accessible, are located on 1 st & 2 nd floors of the Parish Center. PARKING FOR MASS ON SATURDAY & SUNDAY Free parking at the Cowperthwaite Garage is available by permit only for those attending Mass on weekends only. 3 Dear friends, FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT LENT AT ST. PAUL S Our 2018 Catholic Appeal commitment weekend went very well last week. I know that many of our parishioners and visitors generously offered a direct donation or a pledge. If you have not yet done so please prayerfully consider supporting our local Church in Boston in this way. A very special thank you to Paul Cravedi for all of his work in helping to organize many of the details necessary to promote this important appeal. It is hard to believe we are already more than halfway through Lent. This weekend is Laetare Sunday where we Rejoice that Easter is that much nearer to us. So we take the penitential purple of Lent and mix it with the radiant white of Easter joy which gives us this pink (or more properly, rose) colored vestment that the priest will wear at Mass. The word rejoice is where we get the word joy, and my favorite definition of joy is from St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta: JOY - Jesus, Others, and Yourself. When we get right that proper order of what is most important in life we experience true joy! A special congratulations to one of our parishioners, Ifeanyi Menkiti, who this past week was honored with the Cornerstone of Harvard Square Award at the Grolier Poetry Book Shop. He was honored for all of his tireless work in supporting the legacy of Grolier. We are proud of you Ifeanyi! Finally, by the time you read this I will be in Rome for the Harvard Spring break along with 26 of our Harvard students and Fr. George for the 2nd Annual Harvard- Vatican Leadership Summit. Throughout the week we have several meetings and events in the Vatican that will give the students a sense of servant leadership from within the heart of the Church. God bless, Fr. Murphy STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations of the Cross will be celebrated at 5:30pm on Fridays during Lent in the Church. THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU WEDNESDAYS OF LENT 6:30pm to 8:00pm St. Paul s and all the parishes and chapels of the Archdiocese of Boston will be open for individual confessions during Lent, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Please visit to help you prepare. It has videos on the Sacrament of Reconciliation, sheets on how to make a good confession, answers to frequently-asked questions and more. Please make plans to come on Lenten Wednesdays and spread the word of this special outreach of mercy to those you know. LENTEN COMMUNITY LUNCHES The Homeless Out-reach Committee will sponsor the Annual Wednesday Lenten Lunch Program. It will take place on March 14 and 21 at 12:30pm in the lower Church. Guests can come in for coffee & bagels in the morning before the meal is served. Contributions of prepared dishes, vegetables, fruits, individual fruit juices and desserts can be left at the Parish Center no later than 11:00am the day of the meal. Volunteers to set up, greet guests, serve, and clean up are needed. To help, call Carol at (617) or Mercedes at (617) Because of the wide spread flu, we will once again introduce these temporary measures: At the Sign of Peace, people are asked to offer a nod or wave or smile but to refrain from shaking hands. We would ask that everyone receive the Body of Christ by hand and not on the tongue, though the option remains. We will be suspending the receiving of the Precious Blood from the Communion Chalices. SANCTUARY LAMP The Sanctuary Lamp, which burns for eight days and nights at the tabernacle, symbolizes the presence of Christ and marks the boundaries of holy space in the Church. Masses may be offered to remember those who have died, for those who are ill, as well as in thanksgiving for a birthday, anniversary or for a special intention. Please contact the Parish Office, (617) for details and to reserve a particular Mass. CENTERING PRAYER The Centering Prayer group meets on Thursdays from 6:30pm-8:00pm in Mary s Room (Room 202). Our meetings include lectio divina or readings from Fr. Keating or the Christian mystics, followed by a period of Centering Prayer. We are currently reading The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel. For info visit, A BIG SHOT OUT TO THE CAMBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT! PARTNER PARISH COLLECTION: MARCH 17/18 Fr. Elias Tabban, Pastor of St. Paul's Partner Parish in the Holy Land has asked for our financial help in meeting the medical costs for surgeries and medications of parishioners at Our Lady Fatima in Beit Sahour, Palestine. The need is great given the lack of medical insurance available for Palestinian Christians and the chronic lack of employment throughout the Palestinian territories. Through our partnership we have been able to help the "living stones" in the Holy Land to support their families, to educate their children in our rich Christian tradition and to remain faithful witnesses to the love of Christ in the Holy Land. Our Lady of Fatima is a vibrant Parish with a Catholic school educating children from kindergarten through 12th grade. (See photos posted in the St. Paul vestibule). Please consider a donation to support the struggling families in this community who are our sisters and brothers in Christ. Help us let them know that we care. Designate Partner Parish on checks made out to St. Paul Church. The Cambridge Fire Department came to the rescue last week when Fr. George was stuck, for a short time, in the Parish elevator. Everything is back up and running smoothly, and Fr. George is safe and sound. (Fr. George with two of Cambridge s finest).

In fact, when we make the wrong choices or find ourselves forgetting who we are, we can easily find ourselves in darkness. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." Jesus is the light that came into the darkness. It is not enough for us to simply believe that Jesus is the Christ but we must live our lives in witness to this truth. The choices we make and the priorities we establish are going to either speak of someone who really does not care, someone who is confused, or someone who is wholeheartedly convinced of God's love. Which are you?
